LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 Wow! I got to say, he is good, great maybe, but Lidstrom type money? These players who havent proven anything yet demanding and getting this type of money is asinine.
MabusIncarnate 5,359 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 Its really hard for me to understand contracts like this after one successful season, especially when it's followed by an average one. He ended last season with 39 points and a plus 13, what about that performance screams to pay him 56 million? I get that you gotta lock up your future, but for his age and considering his lack in production, I think he held out and got what he wanted and didn't quite earn that hefty contract. Cheechoo had one monster season and look what happened, one of many examples of players getting overpaid after one big year. Half of me hopes that LA gets stuck with a Sheldon Souray, Wade Redden, DiPietro type of situation and regrets making such a big investment.
Esquire 324 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 Welcome to the NFL. Anybody wanna guess if Lombardi deducted the apparent $25,000-a-day off that increase? Unreal.

These players who havent proven anything yet demanding and getting this type of money is asinine. He's no Lidstrom, but you have to remember that Doughty is 21 years old and a Norris trophy nominated defenseman. He's the real deal, he just has some maturing to do. I don't think it's any coincidence that his best season he was paired with Sean O'Donnell (He put up 60 points in his second season in the NHL). The concussion last season definitely affected his game and accounts in part for the low numbers, but he also tries to do too much by himself at times. He's very talented, but he's not Bobby Orr out there. It's a big paycheck, but it's for the player they think this kid can be, not just who he is now. Doughty is their franchise, even more than Kopitar. Add to that he's got that super-****** for an agent, Meehan I think? Practically any star player who has him represent them, the negotiations go right up to or into the season. stevie for president 42 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 Didn't dion phaneuf have a Norris nomination early in his career? I didnt really watch the flames at all but as far as I know he was pretty average until the midway point of this past season when the season was basically over for the leafs. I guess this is the norm for the salary cap era. Pay for potential instead of the old way of paying for past success.

I don't know a lot about Phaneuf's early years, other than he seemed to get a lot of hype for his size and big hits. I can't imagine Doughty disappointing like that, unless he gets his brain rattled again.

These players who havent proven anything yet demanding and getting this type of money is asinine. It's about potential. Just like how E got his current contract and Kronwall got his a few years ago. It's based on what he has shown and what he could develop into. Doughty's potential is very high and he has already shown glimpses of it. I see it as LA having two options. 1. Pay him less now with less years, but when that contract is up they might have to pay him even more than what he is about to make and with a higher cap hit depending on his performance. Also the risking of losing him to free agency faster. 2. Offer him a contract that will keep him with LA for a longer stretch but pay him a little more up front that will hopefully turn into a reasonable deal a couple of years down the road. It's a gamble either way but with the skill set Doughty has I understand why LA gave him that contract.

It sounded to me like they could've signed Doughty a few weeks ago if they agreed to the shorter term he wanted. The sticking point was coughing up the extra money to get him for a few more years. LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 Well, this paying players for "potential" and not performance is going to put this league right back where it was before the lockout.
