toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) I went to my first game in Buffalo yesterday. Not sure why I haven't before (I live in west end Greater Toronto Area), so it's actually pretty close for me and I've flown out of that airport to Orlando the few times we've gone to Disney. It's not closer than going to Toronto of course, but it's much cheaper. The only headache can be the boarder line up, but it was okay. Anyway, the funny thing is, the game was PIT vs BUF and they sang the Canadian anthem. I didn't think about this until about halfway through when I realized there wasn't a Canadian team playing. I'm guessing they do this because there are so many people that come from Ontario for their games (I'm guessing about 1/2 the crowd). I've been to several games in other US cities and they'd only play the Canadian anthem if a Canadian team was playing (same for games in Canada, only US anthem if a US team is playing). Has anyone seen this anywhere else? Detroit is a convenient trip as well for people in South Western Ontario, but there wouldn't be the same volume of Ontarians at Wings' games as there are in Buffalo I'd guess. EDIT: I forgot the main reason for my post....thought this was weird....a few rows in front of me (very close to the glass as my seats were pretty good) someone had a sign that read: "If Crosby scores, Datsyuk gets a puppy" - I mean, even if it was PIT vs DET, the sign still wouldn't have made sense to me. puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 22, 2016 I have been there a couple of times, and yes, lots and lots of Canadian Sabres fans, for sure, being right on the border. Beautiful arena, I thoroughly enjoyed the games I've attended, despite being from Texas and dealing with -10 degrees and snow. Buffalo fans are far harder on their own team than the visitors - and once, it was the Wings, even. Gentle jabs, all in good fun. Another game I attended in Buffalo was Sabs vs. Montreal - it was a different matter! They HATE each other, but I don't blame them for hating the Habs (I do, too!). It got pretty chippy, in the stands and on the ice! I still love the history and atmosphere there. I am glad the local businessmen saved the Sabres from bankruptcy and Adelphia... great fans in Buffalo, they deserve the team and the great performances the Sabres are putting up this season. I have no idea what the signs mean, either, by the way. LOL~

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted February 22, 2016 Hmmm...maybe that is the reason for the sign, but if so, still a weird sign to have at a PIT vs BUF game. Unless the kid's name is Datsyuk (which is possible I suppose, but unlikely).
Barrie 900 Report post Posted February 23, 2016 (edited) I've been to Buffalo about 10 times, seen the Wings 8 times, the other 2 times were the Rangers and Maple Leafs. Yes I've noticed too they sing the Canadian National Anthem, even when a Canadian team isn't playing, which is cool. I agree with puckloo, I like the arena, and Buffalo has great fans. Buffalo's a great city... I have some "all in good fun" stories too... I got a compliment from a Sabres fan one time, which I'm proud of. We were having a conversation about Leafs and Canadiens fans, they were saying how obnoxious and annoying they were. Then one of them said, "Unlike you Red Wings fans, you guys are ok" toby, I live in the West end of the GTA too, in Burlington. We're probably neighbors, haha. FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted February 23, 2016 I think you have it backwards - the Pit fan thinks that Sid is so awesome that even Datsyuk would be a fan. So, Crosby considers Datsyuk a "fan"? ugh... of course, I know the Penguins fan who held that up is.. .well, a Penguins fan, so consider the source. LOL~~

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted February 23, 2016 Ha, I actually caught that as I spelled it...but just left it. Funny thing, I keep hearing an add on the radio, not sure what company, but one of the lines says "we all know there is no "u" in color, but...." I've been thinking, it's always been colour to me growing up....did it change?
