I say Hitch goes back to Dallas, Gallant to Vegas, Sutter to Vancouver.

..although, it'd be sweet to at least get Sutter here as an A. I don't think he'd take the job, unless all HC jobs were already filled. He'd be a perfect replacement if Blas hill doesn't make it past next season.

Dang! 2 for 2 so far! Hitch to Dallas and Gallant to Vegas!

Come on Vancouver!

Apparently the chances of Sutter to continue coaching is slim considering he came outta retirement to coach the Kings.

Maybe Ruff to Vancouver?

What has Blashill done to earn an EXTENSION other than coaching a bottom 5 team and halting progress of basically every young or prime player on our team except Larkin?

Do we have proof that Blashill has "halted the progress of basically every young or prime player on our team except Larkin"? (Why doesn't Blashill get credit for Larkin becoming a legit 1C?)

Seems to me the young talent is developing well and slowly taking over. Seems to me Blashill has been able to get a rebuilding team that's devoid of top-tier talent to a point where they can play any team close, often losing by one measly goal.

I think that's pretty impressive.

I think Blashill's unfairly maligned. I think you have to look at what he's working with and recognize what he's being asked to do. When you view things in context, I think it's hard to make a really strong case for moving on from him. The most damning argument against him is probably "Joel Quenneville could be available." But Quenneville won his Cups with Cup-worthy teams. Who's Blashill's Kane? Who's Blashill's Keith?

I think Blashill’s decision making and overall coaching of an NHL team has improved somewhat this year, as evidenced by what you said. And not Quenneville nor anyone else is going to come in here and really do that much better with this team of players. It was a rough start, and I’m not sure he was the best fit for a transitioning team, but no one can deny that he was dealt a rough hand of players. But in turn the players were dealt a rough hand with a rookie coach cutting his teeth in a league that’s never been more competitive. I’m not surprised they’re thinking of extending him. I’m not wildly upset either at this point. If we can sign an impact player or two in UFA (longshot as it may be...) and land an impact guy in the draft this year and Blashill struggles the next couple years, he’ll obviously be gone. I’m okay waiting for that. Or perhaps he’ll find success. I’m more and more open-minded to the idea.

Blashill isn't a playoff coach like Babcock. He isn't a regular season coach like Bruce Boudreau. He's a developmental coach. His wins and losses are irrelevant. What matters is how the kids progress. Although I would like to see more out of Mantha. I think he did a great job with Bert, Larkin, AA, and Jensen. I see Cholowski and Hronek getting better. Jury's still out on Moose, tho.

That is the Detroit Lions mentality to losing. We only lost by a field goal. Look st our goal differential - it’s horrendous. Some players rise above whoever is coaching them as with Larkin. AA is producing despite being shackled on the 3rd line. Blashill puts Luke Glendening out in the offensive zone face off in OT, Blashill puts DK out in OT and he gets burned. These are small samples of what I feel is the decision making of a bad coach. Whether or not he’s getting the most out of developing players is hard to quantify as opposed to other things, but here’s what I know - the Detroit Red Wings are a bottom 5 hockey club that SHOULD NOT stand pat with the people, players and coaches that either took us here or keep us here as with Holland and Blashill. We need to gut the franchise from the inside out.

Devellano and Holland first.  Agreed.

No, it's not. The Wings have an actual plan. The Wings are adding pieces. The Wings should be better within the next few years. Right now we don't have the talent to contend, so the best we can realistically hope for is good showings from the young talent every night and competitive games. We're getting both under Blashill this season.

  1. Look at our roster -- it's one of the weakest rosters in the league. (Because we're a rebuilding team.)
  2. Look at how many games we lose narrowly and add those up. There's your bad goal differential. It's not like we're getting blown out every night.

That's awfully convenient for your argument. "Blashill is ruining the kids. Larkin doesn't count." Cool.

Yeah? And?

8 hours ago, kylee said:

Because Glendening is a faceoff specialist.

Is it a stupid move? Maybe, maybe not. But it's not like there wasn't any logic behind it and it's not like Blashill's the only coach in the league who would've done it.

Blashill puts DK out in OT against the Leafs and he scores the OT winner. Anecdotes are fun!

I don't know how closely y'all follow other teams, but I can tell you that every NHL fan base has the same complaints about every NHL head coach. I think it says more about the fans than it does about the coaches. Fans want their teams to win every game and play all the young kids all the time. But reality doesn't work that way.

Fair enough. But, personally, you haven't convinced me. Not even close.

If Blash can transform lil'Bert into our very own version of Marchand - why I'll hand deliver our dear coach a bottle of scotch...Or bourbon - his choice.

A lot of fans seem to be embracing the losing culture and are complacent with mediocrity. Hoping Yzerman can reverse that.

Nah. No one wants to cheer for a losing team. BUT after 30 years of winning and no top 10 picks from 1991 - 2016, it's clear a little losing won't.......

You know what? f*** it. How many times does this s*** have to be explained?

I sat next to Coach Q on a flight out to San Fran a month ago.  Our connection from DTW was in Chicago, and that's when we ended up on the flight together.  No sh--.  He was flying into the area for the All Star game and had his wife and kids with him.  (i can provide a picture of evidence if actually needed to support the following.).  Not posting this to play any type of big-shot or "name dropper" (I got bumped to first class and was originally had a ticket in coach), just thought the below was funny.

Long story, long flight, but i basically told coach Q the following scenario that I'd love to see play out:  I prefaced this with saying this could be next year or the year after:  Jimmy D retires or at least gives up his official role as SVP of the Wings, Kenny moves into the SVP position, and Stevie takes the reins as GM.  Stevie hires Coach Q to be our coach.  We potentially have Jack Hughes and a stable of younger talent with growing cap room and expiring contracts to improve the team considerably and fairly quickly.  Coach Q can keep his family in Chicago if he wants (he said his family loves the Chi area) and be a 40 minute flight to jump to-and-from home when wanted/needed.  I also pitched him in relocating his family to the Detroit area as the lifestyle/community is somewhat similar (midwest values, etc.) to that of Chicago.  He said he loved the Detroit area and had spent a lot of time here over the years (he named a few areas, restaurants, and golf courses that he really likes).  He also gushed about the Wings organization.  The deep history, the way they run the organization and what a marvel they've been for so long, original 6, etc..  He commented that "you have this all thought out don't you!"  I think he actually liked my plan (hopeful but I doubt it).  I told him to call my cell if he wanted me to "set the wheels in motion" lol.  I have not heard from him though (yet..lol).

Good move.  I think Holland is the real issue.  Having 3-5 million dollar 3rd and 4th liners isn't a good thing.  Vanek will be gone, but Abdelkader and Nielsen have horrible contracts.
