#2070274 Pronger falls victim to "Avery Rule"

Posted by stormboy on 29 November 2010 - 07:01 AM

yeah, i have mixed feelings on this one.  my gut reaction is that it's a very bush league thing to do, and that i think it should get penalized.  but on the replay, it's not like it goes on for a long time, kipper is wailing on him, and it stopped a significant amount of time before the shot was taken.  it would be different if the ref called the penalty AS pronger was doing it, but the ref let them play and it seemed like he retroactively assessed the penalty.  i don't know.

if this happened to a wing, i'd probably be really pissed.  but it happened to pronger so i'm a little happy on the inside.  just like the correy perry own-goal, couldn't have happened to a better jackass.

#1987493 Jimmy Howard has championship skills

Posted by stormboy on 20 May 2010 - 07:59 AM

K55 got at this, and i don't pretend to predict that howard will become a brick wall, but the dude is an NHL rookie.  yeah, he's old for a rookie, but i don't see any reason to not believe that he can still improve on things like rebound control and stick handling.  he's a rookie.  datsyuk did not do his best stick-handling his rookie year; franzen did not score the most goals of his career his rookie season.

i keep reading people's comments about how howard has failed us and how that means we won't succeed in the future.  i see no reason to believe that he won't improve.  i'm not saying he WILL, but there's a good reason to believe that he might.

the j-ho we saw this year is not the best j-ho we will ever see.

#1976241 There are 7 games in a series

Posted by stormboy on 05 May 2010 - 02:20 AM

I was feeling like s*** and starting to think about next season. Now I realize that's a ****** bag thing to do, 'cause our season isn't over. We have at least 1 game left, let's stop crying and support our f***in' team.

yeah dude.  we might lose thursday; we might win.  i fully support the idea of this thread: just keep cheering your team until they're bounced.

and then, keep cheering them.  because they're the red wings, and we love them.   and if you're going to hate on them just because they lose a couple of games, then jump off the bandwagon and go to hell.

love,

matt.

It could happen. I don't want it to, but I know damn sure it could. I know it doesn't feel like it now for you guys, but all it takes is one win to change the momentum and lift hopes.

Right now I am sure it is tough for the Wings players to believe, but when the game starts on Thursday they can just take it one step at a time. If the Wings win Game 4 and then Game 5 in San Jose, they will all believe, and then it's a real series again.

Sharks were down 3-0 to the Stars two years ago in the western conference semifinals. All hope was lost. They battled for a victory in Dallas and then won an OT game in Game 5 in San Jose and you could tell at that moment the series was real again. They then lost a 4-OT heartbreaker in game 6 where they played their lives out but couldn't get it done. This was the year when the Sharks were cemented as playoff chokers in the eyes of the hockey world (enhanced obviously by our loss to the Ducks one year later) but it was also the year when they really showed the most heart in their Thornton era.

The Wings can do the same.

Nabby is not the kind of playoff goalie who steals games. He is steady, consistent, and he makes some big saves, but he isn't gonna stop 45 shots for a shutout like a Hiller or a Halak or a Kiprusoff in his prime. If the Wings get the kind of pressure they were getting on him in the first period he will let in goals.

I know I won't feel good until there is 00:00 on the clock and the sharks have more goals than the wings (ok, i'd probably feel ok with a 6 or 7 goal lead in the third, but that won't happen).

The fourth win is always the hardest one to get. Guys like Thornton and Pavelski will have to continue to step up in order to beat you guys. I hope they can. Go Sharks!

i could easily be wrong, but you sort of seem like the nicest opposition poster that has ever graced these boards.  also, you seem objective, which is rare among sports fans.

we were all hoping for a good series.  if the wings at LEAST win one game, it will be a better series, drama-wise, than a pure sweep.  as an objective sports fan, i'd like that.  and, as a wings fan, i'd like to see them win four straight.  : )

#1976238 Who would you most blame for a round 2 loss?

Posted by stormboy on 05 May 2010 - 02:10 AM

I think the entire team has failed, after making the hard fought push to make the playoffs since the olympic break the entire team looks gased to me.Also I just don't think Howard has what it takes to make it in the playoffs. He's like Legace,a great season goalie, but come crunch time he just isn't good enough.

We all know at the end of the day it's a team sport, but we just don't have the goaltending this year to get the job done.I had to work tonight and didn't get to see the game, but being up 3-1 midway in the 3rd,there's no excuse for losing this game.We have to find a number one goalie this summer,or next year will be more of the same.

i just don't agree with the bolded part.  you're basing a guy's career value on one playoff run.  sure, he's an "old" rookie, but dude's still an NHL rookie.  like i said before, cam ward had an amazing playoffs in his rookie year, but it's not as if that's led his team to be a perennial cup contender.  i just don't want to see howard getting totally thrown under the bus when he's had once chance to prove himself as a playoff goalie.  IMO we've seen him improve a lot in the last few years from GR to detroit, and it seems to me that, as of right now, there is no reason to assume that he won't be better in the playoffs next year, assuming we make it.

#1976231 Who would you most blame for a round 2 loss?

Posted by stormboy on 05 May 2010 - 01:57 AM

for those blaming howard...i see your point, to a degree.  it's tough to win playoff games when you let in four goals a game.  that short-side goal-line shot, for example, should not have been let in tonight.  it seems like he's had one of those every game -- one goal that he should have gotten.  and we've lost all the games by one goal.  so maybe that IS the difference.

at the same time..yeah, so we're probably going to get bounced in the second round this year.  it's our 19th straight trip to the playoffs, so we can't be that bummed, can we?  maybe this a good learning experience for howie and for the future of the wings.  you can't expect a cup every year.  i'd rather have howie have a mediocre first playoff experience and keep building on that than have a cam ward AMAZING first playoff experience and then not make the playoffs for a bunch of years in a row afterward.  i would say that, in some ways, this a rebuilding year for the wings, but for us, a rebuilding year means only getting to the second round.  for most teams, "rebuilding" means a sub .500 record and no playoff berth.  so, honestly, i'll take it.  don't be too quick to s*** all over howard for one imperfect playoff run.

#1972161 Put Ozzy in.

Posted by stormboy on 03 May 2010 - 06:23 AM

if OP is a troll, he is the most successful troll in the history of the internets.  i want the other 13 or whatever people who voted "yes" on this poll to show their faces.

also, this is probably being discussed in the GDT, but aside from the 10-4 pp ratio, how does 37.6 percent strike you?  that was our faceoff efficiency last night.

but, no, ozzie is not the answer right now.  win faceoffs and don't take so many penalties. we would almost certainly have won the game if those two things has happened.

#1943195 800 posts for a game 2 victory

Posted by stormboy on 15 April 2010 - 04:27 AM

I figured 1,000 was too overwhelming for a game 1. Was almost certainly the reason we lost. :P, something lower should do the trick

That Mp3 clip is awesome! I want to get one to use as my ringtone, needs to be faily lengthy though I guess, for a ringtone. Can you think of any appropriate calls?

#28 Brian Rafalski

after more thought, i agree with your logic.

i'm in the business of making ringtones of wings calls for people.  if you like that one (or any of the mp3s i posted in the "kenny's call of z's gwg" thread), you should be able to use them for a ringtone -- it would just loop, i guess. if you find a longer call that you would want as a ringtone, PM me and i'll hook it up for ya.

on that note, here's a real good one.  i'll post my favorite call as we get closer to 800 -- gotta save the best for last.  :)

edit: this server sucks because it's free; you might have to click it twice or three times to get it to work.  sorry!  :P

Posting for the sake of posting. a red wings game one victory.

#1939634 1000 posts for Game1 Victory!

Posted by stormboy on 13 April 2010 - 11:07 AM

hey y'all.  so i gotta drive up north an hour to work on my mom's last will on account of her cancer. sorry to be a debbie-downer...thought i'd post here for one more LGW post since i probably won't be able to post again today.  if anyone wants to shoot up prayers in the from of a game 1 victory post, i would super love that.

hockey is great; family is better.  and when one meets the other, it is unstoppable.  much like the wings in the playoffs.

LET'S GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1938325 Wings-Coyotes Official Schedule Announced

Posted by stormboy on 12 April 2010 - 03:03 AM

I'm sitting in one of the "Quite Zones" at my university library.

I laughed out loud at this, you just made me an outcast  <_<

ah, you poor bastard.  i graduated last spring and i do not miss school *at all*.

although, now i'm working a third-shift job to pay back my loans, which means i'm probably going to miss most of the games (i'm off friday though...w00t!)

hmm...let's see.  i work wednesday night, but my job allows me to have an MP3 player (with fm tuner) on at work...the only problem is that in GR 107.3 is the only local sports radio station, and i think that tigers games trump even playoff NHL games just because of ratings (which bums me out).  tigers play at 1:05 wednesday, though, so HOPEfully that game will be on 107.3.  friday i can watch live.  sunday afternoon game = win.  next tuesday with the wings on at 6.30 the tigers are not on until 10:10...so they might air that one, too!  sweet!  next friday might suck with the tigers being in texas and the wings on at ten.  hopefully they'll at least join in progress...which sometimes they do and sometimes they have an hour of postgame instead of playing a live sporting event, which drives me crazy.

don't get me wrong, i love the tigers, and will listen to them all summer.  but there's no way that early-season anything should trump playoff anything.  i'd feel the same way in october if the tigers were in the POs and they had an early season wings game on.

now, if the whitecaps are on instead of the wings this spring WBBL WILL be getting an angry call from me.  i realize more people watch baseball than hockey, but SURELY there are more wings fans in GR than whitecaps fans.

#1932392 Wings are playoff bound.

They have played like they should ~3 out of 79 games.. that's some serious SUCKING.

shut. up.

#1926068 Unbelievable deflection by Holmstrom

Posted by stormboy on 27 March 2010 - 08:31 AM

Holmström was number 15 when he first got to Detroit, but wanted 96 for the year he got to the NHL - Bowman's suggestion was that he take 97, for the year he would leave the NHL.

is that true?

i'm a pretty new hockey fan, so i never watched cicarelli play, so i can't really contribute to that discussion.  i will say that while homer can't skate, can't pass, can't take faceoffs, can't kill penalties, can't deke very well (a few exceptions aside), and doesn't have much of a slapper, not only does he have great tipping ability/hand eye coordination, but -- and i've always thought this was his greatest asset, he pays thef****** price in front of the net, every shift, every game.  if "crosschecks taken" was a stat they kept track of, homer would win it by a mile every season.

while i, as a long-time filppula supporter, have *loved* seeing him thrive of late, i ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO EAT CROW when it comes to homer.  i guess he was more injured than i realized last year, when he did not seem like himself.  i honestly believed that he had not only lost a step, but could no longer compete in the NHL.  i argued that our team would be better without him.

:rotflmao:

i couldn't have been more wrong, and i am SO happy about that.  LONG LIVE THE DEMOLITION MAN!!!

Just thought I'd throw this in there ;)

a beauty, for sure, but he probably wouldn't do that again in ten more shootout attempts.
