In reference to non-suspensions of Malkin and Weber, I can't agree more, but I think the reason that Abby got two, other than two games being par for the course this playoff season for suspendable hits; is mainly because this ( being "blindsided hits" ) was an issue that the league has addressed and stated over and over again through disciplinary measures that they will not tolerate it. Believe me I'm just as pissed as the next guy about to new NHL tuning soft and that Abby's hit was pretty borderline and etc etc. Bottom line is you have to adapt, especially when it comes to "blindside" hits. IMO. I just think that this particular type of hit has been addressed for several years now and that is why Abby got suspended for it.

Also the Weber incident was such a joke non-call that it received national media attention, so you know that's just a total ball dropping by the league.

I do agree with your sentiment about the Wings staying put.

 

I think that as fans, across any sport, we love to play GM and draw up all these hypotheticals that most of the time are simply pipe dreams and just will not happen. Especially trades. If you want to get rid of all these players, you're assuming that other teams will them. Like Sammy, Cleary, White, you can't just move them at will. You can't just implode the team and automatically stay competitive.

 

The Wings are competing right now. They're doing what they can with what they got. Do you have to ask for more? IMO it is not realistic in this salary cap age to think your team will just be lights out every year. Take a step back and realize, like the title implies, your team cannot be above average every year. There's no reason to overly negative about it.

To be fair the kings offense is also the worst offense in the league. 

Fair enough, but they still are the defending Cup champs. They were getting chances all day. They have offensive firepower, albeit not starting well so far this season. And Jimmy was coming off a hard fought game yesterday. As hard as he worked today, he deserves some credit.

 

I wonder what it will take for Jimmy naysayers to come around. A Cup? Again, I do not put Jimmy as a Top 5, maybe even 10, goaltenders in the league, but he usually gives the team a chance to win. He is the Wings guy until proven otherwise.

 

The times I have said, "Jimmy was huge today." outweigh the times I have said, "He cost us the game today."

Not an excuse for him playing subpar, but A) Jimmy was one that didn't play at all during the lockout and B) he hasn't gotten a rest all season.

 

I think blaming the goalie is an easy way out for the team's shortcomings as a whole. No he's not a Vezina candidate every season but he is our guy until proven otherwise. I don't look at any games this season and say, "Jimmy lost us this one." But that's just me.

DRW this year.

Putting a Cup contender on the ice every single year in a

salary cap age is much easier said than done.

As a fan, I will watch this season and be faithful that

changes will be made either at the trade deadline or the off season. The
options are there. Kenny took his best shot at Suter and Parise and it didn’t
happen. That doesn’t mean we should go after whatever’s out there now. The free agent class after this season is just as good and would help the squad majorly. The Ducks can't conceivably keep everyone.
Don’t make team changing moves this season if we don’t realistically have a
chance to compete as well as we would if we can sign others after the season.

Just what I think. We’re a spoiled fan base and expect a Cup

every year, as we should, but is it really realistic in this day & age? Not
every single young talent is going to want to come here. We have to adjust. And
that will take time. It is what it is. But I keep my faith that we will always
be a competitive team, even if this year is a total blow, we will not turn into
the Chicago Blackhawks of the early 2000s.

I simply have to disagree with the "no risk" assessment of signing Semin to a one-year deal. No risk after this season, but plenty of risk for this season!

I mean, I completely understand that the fanbase can be discontent with the way this offseason has gone and the fact that the DRW are simply not as reliable as they used to be being a locked elite team.

But come on now, that's the way the NHL has gone since the lockout, and frankly, that's sports in general. I have to agree with the old bit that we are spoiled as DRW fans these past two decades. With salary caps, long term contracts, and the sport even changing in itself, it's just extremely difficult to keep a first place team on the ice year after year. I am just as unhappy to say this is the roster the squad has moving forward, but it is what it is. We're talking about Kenny Holland and the Detroit Red Wings here. He's not going to just pull the trigger on some drawn up deal that took a few minutes to think up. He is going to do what is best for the organization in the long run and do what he can in the short run. He has proven that. He has fudged up as of late, sure. But the cards are stacked against you right now. You can't win them all.

Parody has taught us you don't need a dream team to win in all. The Wings aren't set up to win the President's Trophy next year. They will roll with what they got and if they have a terrible year, so be it. Maybe a wake call and finishing 12th in the Conference will be a wake up call to everyone in this town to cherish what we have had these past twenty years.

A little bias, because Helmer's my favorite guy on the squad, but I do think this is worth the signing. He has only gotten better, and unless becomes injury prone, I don't see why he will continue to do so over the next few years. Maybe not huge numbers, but the guy busts his ass every night, does he not? Teams benefit from players like that.  :thumb up:
