Bowl games in general

OK, I started this thread as an excuse to brag about the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA (GO HOOS GO) which beat Minnesota in the Music City Bowl. Laugh if you will, but next year the tradition-rich Peach Bowl becomes the who-cares Chick-Fil-A Bowl. YECCHH!!!

But the rest of the bowl season's been decent, too. With some new teams showing up in bowl games like Akron, Arkansas State, and Rutgers, I think it's interesting. And Akron got robbed in the Motor City Bowl, in my opinion.

Too bad Michigan couldn't lock up the Alamo Bowl. Ugh. What a disappointing season. For the rest of bowl season, I'll be pulling for Notre Dame, South Florida (because a friend of mine is absolutely insufferable when NC State wins and I can really give it to him if they lose) and of course, Texas to beat USC.

i am looking forward to seeing notre dame against ohio state. I think you're going to learn a lot about both teams in that game. winner should be a top 5 team next year.

Sorry, but USC is going to knock texas all around the rose bowl. USC is going to win by 20 plus. The trojans might as well play new england in the super bowl....ha ha...i wish. It would be a helluva game.

I went to the Houston Bowl to watch my alma mater. TCU beat Iowa State in an extremely hard-fought, intense game, 27-24. We finished 11-1. TCU had one brainfart against a pretty sub-par opponent so it'll always be a what could've been season if you focus BCS, but I don't care who you play against, winning 11 games against anybody is pretty damn good. They'll move up a few spots in the polls after the season finished, hopefully they'll crack the top-10.

I'm big on LSU and I was able to watch most of the Peach Bowl while in Houston. Totally surprised that LSU blew Miami out of the water given the circumstances of the game and a backup QB for them. It's a shame that their offense couldn't be as good throughout the whole season or they might have had a better chance, though still a long one, to play for the national championship. At the very least they probably would've made the BCS series if the offense showed up more.

I've been pretty lazy today watching football throughout. Texas-USC will be the where all the fireworks will happen, so I'll look forward to tuning into that one on Wednesday.

Bowl season is catch-22 for me. I love college football so the more games to watch, the better, and for a mid-major like TCU, more bowl games are good because of more opportunities. But I think there's too many of them now. I think about 20 bowl games are more than enough, which means everybody who deserves a bid should get in, and you'll get some unranked teams in that could probably play with the big boys not game in and game out, but at least one game potentially pulling an upset.

I don't know how a playoff system would work initially, but I don't like the BCS all that much even though it worked this year. It takes away from the other bowl games in general and unless you are an alum of the school or a huge fan, the bowl games before January just don't matter to the general public IMO.

you can't have favorable refs either. You can't have the Michigan-Nebraska game with refs from the Big Ten or Big Twelve....you have to pick neutral coaches.

neutral refs you mean wink.gif

But I agree that the Sun Belt Conference shouldn't have been working the Alamo Bowl. The ACC, for example, would have done fine. Sun Belt refs should be working the games between the small conferences - Motor City Bowl, for example (C-USA vs. MAC).

And I disagree with the idea that there are too many bowls. It does seem a bit ludicrous, but I love watching teams that you never get to see otherwise, Rutgers and Akron, etc., and it helps to even out the playing field between the little guys and the power schools (which I like even though I'm a Michigan fan).

Well I know that......

There could have been a crew from the ACC or Big East or Pac Ten at least.....

oh and f**k ohio state

Iowa and Michigan were definitely screwed by the officials thumbdown.gif

I also think Notre Dame got shafted tonight in the Fiesta Bowl. They should've had a TD after the fumble recovery to make it 21-20 and have the momentum swing their way, instead it was a bad call to rule it an incomplete pass as the OSU guy took a couple of steps before the fumble. OSU then kicks a FG to make it 24-13 rather than 21-20, a huge call that was blown.

Considering it should have been Michigan in that game, not Iowa, I don't feel much sympathy. especially the way Michigan was jobbed by the backyard refs in the Alamo.

I hate being in the position to defend OSU, but he was definitely juggling that ball. No catch.

give it a rest. Michigan seriously doesn't deserve to go to any big bowl games this year after the year they had. No way should they be playing on New Year's Day (Jan 2nd this year)...

I thoroughly enjoyed the Fiesta Bowl. Of course we tried to let Notre Dame back in the game with our typical turnovers, but even that wasnt enough to squander away that performance. Go Bucks!

BLAH BLAH BLAH. wink.gif

really....any team that loses the bowl game they went to should NEVER EVER complain about getting screwed out of a better one.

Two things--

Michigan was cheated out of the bowl game. If you couldn't see that, you obviously didn't see the game.

Michigan had an identical record to Iowa, and BEAT Iowa AT Iowa, and was ranked higher than Iowa in all rankings, not to mention Iowa had more recently played Florida and more recently played in the Outback bowl.

So how does Iowa go to the Outback bowl ahead of Michigan? NOTHING this season or in recent history ranked Iowa above the Wolverines in the Big Ten or otherwise.

You're right, I didn't see the game. Was busy driving home. But I'm a Michigan fan and I still say, if you lose your bowl game under whatever circumstances, you have bigger things to worry about than if you should have gone to a better one. It just sounds like huge sour grapes to complain about it.

Michigan had its worst season since 1984. That was so long ago, the Tigers were actually good. They lost their bowl game, they lost to Ohio State, and they lost the Little Brown Jug. By Michigan standards it was a crummy season. They got bigger fish to fry than whether they should have been in the Outback Bowl or not. It's not like it's the BCS. It's not like it's even one step below the BCS in the Citrus Bowl (side note: f*** Capital One). It's the Outback Bowl. Better to spend the energy complaining about the defense that couldn't make a crucial stop all season.

By the way, that Orange Bowl was phenomenal. You rarely get to see a game like that where both sides just play their hearts and guts out. I despise Florida State but I'll give them this, they really played a hell of a game from the very start to very finish. Good thing Penn State just had a little more in them (and a slightly better kicker).

Sorry, I don't like seeing Michigan have to burn two timeouts to get reviews on plays that should have been reviewed anyway, especially when one call is reversed and the other SHOULD have been.

Or BLATANT pass interference penalties that are not called, and as a result of this Michigan gives up the ball instead of getting a first down inside the Nebraska 5.

Or even worse, when a penalty is NOT called on the final play of the game, when Nebraska's entire team mobbed the field DURING play while MICHIGAN had the ball, and had they not rushed the field Manningham would have had a clear path down the field. As it stood, Michigan made it to the 13 yard line and would have had another down from inside the ten had a penalty been called, as the game cannot end on a defensive penalty.
