theman19 47 Report post Posted May 3, 2006 http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2428558 so basically yet another russian club is thumbing it's nose at the nhl and hold hostage a great player. Now this kid is dumb for signing that contract in the first place (if indeed he wanted to play in the nhl) but i doubt highly the pens could afford 25 million to pay for this kids ransom. Now then,...do you think if they can't another team could? If so what would the nhl want in return for it?
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 3, 2006 It would be idiotic for another team to try and sign Malkin. Oh, yeah, we're out 25m AND we didn't even get the player because the Pens matched! Only way he goes elsewhere is if the Pens trade him.
theman19 47 Report post Posted May 3, 2006 agreed, but the pens cannot afford him so either he stays in russia or his rights are traded. Thus said my question was, what do you think it would take for a team to give up to have his rights, given the hefty price tag above his head
kozac 10 Report post Posted May 4, 2006 Aren't they just asking to buy out his contract? I don't think his contract is $25mil
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 4, 2006 Malkin stands a decent chance of being traded, the question is if a team that could afford to post a few million for his transfer is willing to do so and has the assets. Malkin would likely be traded for a solid young forward and perhaps a defenseman. Toronto could hand over Stajan or Steen as well as Coliacovo or White to pick him up. Los Angeles would probably have to part with Frolov plus, Detroit would have to give up Datsyuk or Zetterberg and perhaps Kronwall. Philadelphia might have the necessary parts to complete a deal--Richards plus Rathje should certainly take care of it--but it's unlikely Pittsburgh would deal him to Philly. ColdWarrior 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2006 (edited) I'd offer Hudler + Blatak + pick (2nd or 3rd) for him. Would consider strengthening offer by replacing one of the players with Grigs or offering 1st... still not sure that'd do it though. For a team used to spending 75M, a few mill in transfer fees isn't much. Edited May 6, 2006 by ColdWarrior

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 30, 2006 I would offer them Datsyuk and Maltby, plus maybe a pick and/or Williams. The question is...would they accept that?
detroitdan 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2006 I think the Leafs would have to trade Stajan, Steen, Coliacovo, and White to get Malkin...those are not great players...Steen is the only one out of those four that will be any good...I watched Stajan play here with the Baby Leafs...he's useless
