Holland: Wings close to signing "Top 4" D-man

Leetch doesn't make one iota of sense unless the team is considering trading a guy like Schneider for cap relief. (I don't think Leetch would get a high salary at all and if Schneider were to be traded it'd result in a cap savings around $1-2M, IMO.) Leetch, obviously, isn't the physically imposing figure or presence in front of the net that Holland has said previously that the team is looking for to "replace" Fischer.

Do we really need FOUR offensive-defensemen?

Markov, however, DOES make sense. The most of any of the mentions here, anyway.

Lidas is buffing Jönsson here, and I think he's our man.

Lidström-Jönsson is be a LOT BETTER 1st pairing than the other 31-year old swede there.

Markov isn't just coming here.

Assets Has tremendous poise on the ice. Makes crisp passes and loves to find streaking forwards. Is valuable in any game situation.

Flaws Has a history with concussions that is a long-term concern. Needs to be more physical in front of the net.

Career potential Top four defenseman.

Sounds like a Holland type of guy. I bet it's him.

This is obviously the Fischer replacement Holland has alluded to for the past few months.

It doesn't replace Fischer's physical presence. That's what this blueline corps has been sorely lacking and a guy like Jonsson or Leetch doesn't provide that.

Markov may have priced himself out of Detroit and that's what we're left looking at on the free agent market, however.

That said, it does look like Jonsson fits the track record, for sure.

Kenny Jonsson.

6'3", 217lbs.

Hooray!

Umm, not too physical, so we're left with the same problem. Not to ruin your party though. This team still needs a Jason Smith, Steve Staios type of crease clearer, that's what Holland was alluding to. Funny, Jonsson has a history of concussion problems, and is an injury concern, but people have no problem signing him, compare that to Lindros-where people break out in hives when you mention his name and it's "stay clear"

I'm agreeing with you. This is not the type of d-man we need, but based on Holland's track record, this is likely who we're gonna get. I don't think the poster you quoted knew about the concussion problems. Otherwise, I doubt there'd be a hooray in there.

Thats why i think there is more to this signing than meets the eye. Someone is on their way out.

Jonsson would be a good addition, no doubt. He's not super physical, but evidence seen in the olympics this past year has shown him to be more physical than he used to be. Don't be surprised if we sign someone like Sean Hill though too... I have a feeling we'll sign either Jonsson, Markov, Hill, or Roszival. Either through FA or trade.

I don't think the concussion problems are as big of a deal with Jonsson anymore, look at his game played per season, he hasn't missed more than 10-15 games at most per season... And i'm not even sure that is for concussion reasons. I'm sure if the concussion thing was a big deal, we wouldn't sign him, plain and simple. If Lidstrom has been calling him to get him on the team, then I'm not going to complain.

Who is Roszival?

That's an insult to Vladdy. Markov is physical, but very injury prone and is not the best character for the locker room. I guess he's better than nothing

Look, I know that NO ONE can replace Vlady, but he is atleast physical. I guess I have always liked him from his Toronto days. The Wings need a younger, mobile, physical defenseman. Perhaps Markov is not the be all end all, but I would love to have him.

I kinda pissed we didnt wait around to see what happened with Sarich though.

A Lilja clone who played for the Rangers last season and wants $2M+

He used to be a Lilja Clone. And then he came to the Rangers and Tom Renney turned him into a legitimate top 3 Dman. He had a career turn around in NYR. Hes very solid now.

Yes. Kronwall and Markov both love to take the body. If they can stay healthy, it will make the Wings alot tougher to play against. I agree with Barnes though, that the Wings need a crease clearing defencemen. Perhaps they can move Schneider to make this happen.

Lidstrom - Markov

Kronwall - Crease Clearer

Chelly - Lilja/Lebda

Much tougher D to play against then what they have now.

It could be a trade that is almost complete, so it could be Sarich or maybe even Souray.

This is great news, I hope its Markov!!! And if Hasek's agent keeps contacting Kenny, AND we we're going to take a chance on psycho Eddie, does that mean Kenny might be turing Dom's way next? Or is that not even a possiblity with the trade offer's out there?...Either way, this is going to be interesting to see what Kenny does!

IO hope its markov. He brings us that grit, and he can put up about 40 points. Also if its leetch that is stupid. Leetch was injured almost all last year and didnt even do that good.

I was so glad that Eddie the ******* went to the Panthers. I sure hope that Holland does not get into the Hasek circus again. Heck, we'd still have Cujo if it were not for him.

I was thinking that too.

Anyways, the reason theyre signing another top 4 is because they are clearly preparing to trade Mathieu Schneider and Jason Williams to Edmonton for Raffi Torres. :sly:

Its really too bad Lowe is one of those "smart" GMs

Not true. Cujo was bought out as a result of the salary cap. Rather, the club turned down the option on his final contract year.
