MLive: Lang could be dealt prior to deadline

"...Robert Lang is often criticized for looking lazy on the ice, slow and prone to turnovers, and is frequently the center of trade speculation. But, he has good size, something this team lacks, and the strength to battle down low and get to the net, though he hasn't shown it much this season. And he has been one of the Wings' better playoff performers the last two seasons. Still, I have a feeling he's going to be dealt before the Feb. 27 trading deadline, especially if the Wings land Peter Forsberg. The New York Rangers reportedly have some interest in Lang and a deal would clear some salary cap space for the Wings to make another move (Todd Bertuzzi, Bill Guerin, Ladislav Nagy?) and might even get them a draft pick, a prospect or a depth player in return....

This was mentioned in the Forsberg trade thread, but I felt this deserved it's own discussion.

I like Lang. But if Detroit does trade for Forsberg, with intentions of signing him, than Lang will not resign with the team.

Actually, I don't believe he'll resign anyway. So this makes sense to me.

I'll be amazed if Holland can pull off three major deals before Feb 27. But he does have some cap space.

Lang going to the Rangers makes perfect sense. He and Jagr were a pretty dynamic duo in Washington a few years back and they shouldn’t have a problem recreating that chemistry.

I agree they were very good together. We should get 2 drafts picks and a prospect at least. Or Maybe Prucha :P

While I'm not thrilled about moving Lang since he has been a consistent playoff performer, I'll reserve judgement until a deal is made, and the terms are disclosed.

As of now, I don't wan't Lang moved for fear of him not fetching a solid return (in regards to *THIS* years playoffs).

How is this going to help the team in the playoffs? Sure it will may help the Wings in the future, but what good will that do now?

Why would Holland be interested in picks?

Lang was one of our top performers in the playoffs the last two years. Why would they want to get rid of him?

Because his replacement, Forsberg, is an even better playoff performer and all-around player? Yes, he's more injury-prone, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better playoff performers out there, IMO.

I don't feel Lang is dealt unless Forsberg is already a Wing.

yes, but where has the team gone in the playoffs the last two years?

right where Manny carried us :(

Lang is a clutch in playoffs. dealing him now makes little sense if we are talking about the

Red Wings that may lack scoring touch in playoffs and a team that seems to have only

two factors to address at the trade line: scoring, toughness. Lang is able to deliver

in playoffs and has big enough frame to make himself some room.

trading him for youth would basically mean Wings are not trying to win anything this

playoffs which makes zero sense to me.

the only way I could see Wings shipping Lang is for a better and more physical forward.

hmmm... Tucker?

To clear cap space so that we can pick up a winger who can play on the top two lines. This would be contingent, of course, on the WIngs picking up Forsberg to repleace Lang. I like Lang, too, but it doesn't seem make much sense to carry Datsyuk, Forsberg and Lang on the same team.

Lang @ $3.9m is an overpay, but he does bring something to our team... turovers. :P Seriously, he can score, the playoff game is a bit different, and he seems to thrive in it. If he is shipped to N.Y., I'd like to get a player in return as well as a pick if possible. I know nothing of how they are done, but I'd hate to give Lang up for nobody and just picks; regardless of whom we may acquire elsewhere.

Agreed!!! Can everything swing fast enough to still bring in Guerin or Bertuzzi??? Still need size/grit.

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom

Guerin/Forseberg/Samuelson

Maltby/Draper/Franzen

Hudler/Filppula/Williams

Trading for prospects and picks is what you do when your team isn't going to make the playoffs.

I have to agree with Matt (no, really, as a mod I have to ;)) that Lang isn't going to be dealt until Holland already has a replacement for him.

Trading Lang after the aquisition of Foresberg is a salary dump move. He will do this to "replenish" the prospects/picks he gives up for Foresberg. If Holland was smart, he could swing a Lang/williams/2nd for Foresberg deal.

It does make sense if the Wings have already acquired Forsberg, who would center the 2nd line. Lang would be expendible. Trading him east (Rangers/Habs/Thrashers) for draft picks or prospects would help give the Red Wings more cap space to make a deal and more tradable assets to swing another deal to get a scoring winger for Forsberg.

How menacing would this team be if your top line was Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom and if was followed up by Bertuzzi/Tkachuk-Forsberg-Cleary?

It'd be nice that's for sure, I'd kinda like to see Tkachuk come in over Bert. For a few reasons, but one being Tkachuk wouldn't have just stood by and watched Z get punched, cross checked ect., last night. He'll drop the gloves if need be, and he's a punishing checker. Two years in a row now Calgary cheapshoting Z and Dats near the end of the season. <_<

edit--- whereas, I don't think Bert would be able to play that role (going after someone, for gunning for Z or Dats) after the whole incident. Besides, he's no where close to game shape.

say we get someone like Tkachuk, how long would it take for that player to stick up for one of our guys, i mean for the last how many years has Tkachuk been trying to take off our heads? I wouldn't expect an immediate turnaround if we get that kind of trade. On the other hand, if the player we acquire is smart and wanted to win over his new team, he would get into a few fights in his first game, and lay on a few retaliation hits.

Which one would be closer to something that would happen?

These guys are professionals. Tkachuk isn't going to let his teammates down just because of what has happened in the past.

This isn't WWF or something like that
