Reffing the past 5 games....

Now i know we're all a little Red Wings bias, but the past 5 games the officaiting has been god aweful.

i checked game logs on NHL.com for a complete list of penalties for and against, and i came up with these numbers.

41 penalties for

24 penalties against

Pretty damn close to 2:1. Now for a puck possession team like Detroit, these numbers just dont make sense to me. Seems the refs are letting the oppostion get away with everything, and we get called for just about anything. Either that, or we're just a bunch of goons playing against flawless teams.

Just a 'we just lost two games in a row, so I'm in a sour mood' rant i suppose.

Hey look at it this way: We beat Nashville in spite of it, and we only lost to Calgary - a team on their top game - by one goal, and they probably wouldnt have even had that goal had Hasek not flopped around.

I think its impressive weve done so well with the calls not going our way.

The Flames clearly had more energy than the Wings last nite. There really wasn't much to call last nite, maybe one or two that were missed (both ways), but that's about it. Schneider was on HockeyCentral this morning and admitted that injuries may be catching up with them.

no s*** injuries are catching up, i mean look at buffalo they went strong for a while, but eventually they hit a slump zone...itll happen to us too, lets just hope its toward the end of the reg seasona dn doesnt carry to the playoffs

You may be a bit right that we may be bias, when it comes to the Red Wings, i did not get to watch the game against the Flames, but the game against Vancouver wee complete bull$hit, the calls against the WIngs were disgustingly minor little things and we were getting called for everyone one of them. Vancouver was playing just as dirty if ot worse than the wings and there were no calls on them.

The officiating has gotten bad...

The Wings are always gonna getted jammed by the refs in Western Canada. We should really factor that into the game plan if we play them in the playoffs. Think I'm exaggerating? Just watch... But we can't afford to have our goalie giving away goals on gaffes, though, and that's what the games have come down to of late.

I'm really tired of people whining about the officiating in the NHL. In all the hockey boards I visit it seems if your team loses it's because the refs are terrible.

I've watched the last 5 games and while there have been some bad calls against the Wings, there have been an equal amount of ball calls against their opposition. But saying that, I'd say at least 90% of the penalties the Wings have been whistled for, they've deserved them.

In both the Vancouver and Calgary games they took some terrible penalties because they couldn't handle the speed and tenacity of their forecheckers. And in some cases, we didn't stay disciplined enough to ignore some of the agitators that have been thrown out against us.

It's not the refs fault that we never have a guy in front of the net. It's also not the refs fault that we can't, or won't, fight for the middle of the ice (where many games are won and lost).

The Wings need to point the finger at themselves, not the officials, for wins and losses.

Injuries?

What does that have to do with this thread?

Quoted for truth.

the only games the wings actually showed up to play out of the past 5 were against Nashville. Many of the penalties we had were well deserved, much of them resulting from being positioned wrong, or just losing self control.

Agreed. While I am not the first to say some calls were questionable, and the refs certainly could have called a little more on Calgary, most of the calls were deserved.

Just look at who is taking most of the penaltys. It's Lang. Is this any suprise? Even with Calder playing on his line, he still gets like he has a log jammed up his ass and is so lazy that he has to hook and grab onto other guys so he isn't burned. Really, most of this stuff is coming from Lang, not all of it, but most of it. He could show a little more effort out there, then maybe there would be less calls.

This is correct. Thread closed.

I agree part of the reason they lost is because they took too many penalties. Most of them were legit, a few were questionable, but whatever.

But they didn't make many calls against the other teams and give them a bigger cushion, as if they're trying to do them a favor.

I thought much of the disparity in calls against Vancouver was deserved...the game last night was a joke, especially the interference off the puck. The refs basically set the tone in the 1st period that the game would be called tight...the problem is they swallowed the whistle afterwards.

I hate to blame anything on the refs but that 41/24 ratio seems way too unbalanced. Having said that, those figures tend to even out in the long run.

Season totals (NHL.com)

354 PP oppertunities

366 Times Shorthanded

You couldn't be more right, and the numbers prove it. I dont think people have complained about the refs all year long. I sure havn't.

While it's true most of our penalties have been legit, it's the iffy calls against us that have bothered me, and the iffy calls missed against the opposition the past couple of games. Example: Stick stuck in Calder's helmet vs Colorado, Alberts tackling the net off as the puck was trickling in, numerous charges by Tootoo, Charge last night by Stuart on Flip... etc.

Regardless, the calls do end up evening out in the long run, just as FinWing said... Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.

I hope your right.. I got faith in you

Thanks mate! That ratio better balance out over the next five games or the refs can go to hell for all I care. :P

I figured the numbers would be something like that (in terms of for/against ratio). That's one reason why they play a long season, the effect of lopsidedly called games is eliminated. Once in a while you have to suck it up but in the end it goes both ways.

Are you kidding? The NHL owes us twelve power plays! ;)

what, are we going to play no-contact roller hockey if we get a playoff matchup with a w. canada team? The Wings play our own game and are not going to change just to please the refs, it is common knowledge that the refs put the whistles away in the playoffs anyway so anything short of a over the shoulder two hander will be let go.

The Wings didn't lose the last two games because they got called for more penalties. They lost because they scored a grand total of two goals. They're not going to win many games that way.
