eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted April 4, 2007 I'm sure if he wanted to play here again he'd take a major paycut. His point totals don't exactly spell "raise" anyways, so I doubt he'd make what he does now. I'd rather buy out Samulesson and keep Maltby, since Maltby at least is an agitator. Unfortantly that probably won't happen, but that'd be the ideal case in my mind. Buying out Sammy isn't an option. He's slated to make 1.2m each of the next two years, and it's unlikely we'd find a better player that would cost us less between the new player's salary and Sammy's buyout costs. A better option would be to deal Sammy partway through next year for whatever we can get.
Offsides 21 Report post Posted April 5, 2007 I doubt it. Lang and Babcock aren't exactly the best of friends as it is, so if Lang is going to come back it's going to be for top dollar. Which he is definitly not worth. Maltby makes less than half of what Lang makes. The only debate on Maltby is he doesn't do as much as he used to. His salary is hardly an issue here, since if we kept Maltby at the same price and dumped Lang we'd have over 2 million in free cap room. I don't advocate keeping Maltby for what he makes at all right now, as it is too much, but you can't compare it to Lang at all. Lang may have 49 points, and that's ok, but his otherwise lazy and unenthusiastic play makes him not worth the money. I don't know as to the friendship of Lang and Babs, and maybe he will leave...it's not like these rumors aren't flying around about EVERY OTHER Red Wing who's played with Babs - past and present. But Lang does get playing time and decent Wingers so far that he must be somewhat happy. I guess it would depend a lot on whether he wants to move, and what he can get from other teams. I'm not sure why we are comparing Maltby and Lang, actually...but I think Lang is a much better player than Maltby, and it would be more worthwhile to keep Lang on the team than Malts...although, again, at a paycut. If we can keep both, I'm not going to be sad at all, that would be great. If Lang decides to go, well, that is how it happens, sometimes.

The only other player that supposidly didn't like Babcock was Shanahan. That, I feel, is the main reason why he left. Babcock likes hard working forwards. Shanahan was perhaps one of the laziest players on the team, not as much as Lang, but he still was. I won't argue with what Shanahan did though, since he scored almost as many goals last years as Lang has points this year. The comparison to Maltby and Lang came about because their contracts were being compared. Sure Lang is a better player than Maltby, but Maltby will probably take the bare minimum, where as Lang will more than likely not.

arnoldbuck 0 Report post Posted April 5, 2007 And don't forget Datsyuk Yeah, I guess it all depends on what other teams offer, and if the Wings make an offer... That is a good point. When/if Lang leaves ... whatever happens ... if we do sign Dats he is going to have a significant pay raise. That will eat up a good portion of potential salary towards new players. And as has been discussed, the cluster-f*ck of other UFA we have too. Though, I can only imagine unless he pulls out something remarkable, Bert will drop a little pirce wise.
