jpfalcon09 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2007 The salting of gray in the last playoff beard of the Thrashers Scott Mellanby was a hint. The declining number of late-game shifts, the blur of younger players streaking down the ice, the accelerated aging process of the athlete - they all foretold his immediate future. So, this is how it would play out for Mellanby: A four-and-out postseason dusting by the New York Rangers that at times tweaked his pride and tested his captaincy. There are no guarantees how a long career ends in any business. Especially in sports, where sentimentality is the first victim of keeping score. Getting swept by the Rangers in an experience that Mellanby perfectly described as “deflating,†is hardly the way a 21-season-long run is supposed to finish. “I think it is. It has been a great, fun ride, but I think it’s time,†he said. Best of luck to Scott in the future, he's always been a great leader who never got his due. Poor guy never won a Cup either. Thanks to Scott for all he did for the game.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 19, 2007 Stand-up guy, Mellanby. One that I'd have loved to see in the winged wheel in a heartbeat. Here's to an excellent career.
wingsfan75 2 Report post Posted April 19, 2007 It's too bad there's no rat icon because I'd throw a few at the ice for him. He came that close only to have the Avalanche win in the finals. He was a great player who never was able to taste from the chalice. Good luck Scott.

Legionnaire11 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2007 good player, never great, always there and always 100%. Even when he was on the blues I couldn't hate him. Another relic of the "old NHL" bites the dust. Good luck Scott!

StaticWithABeat 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2007 Not a Mellanby fan after his s***-talking Blues days, but he definitely deserves props...he was a good example of everything a hockey player should be.
