HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 I know all the Sharks fans have been surprised with the fans at the JLA and it being not sold out. Here's a pretty good article explaining most of the reasons why. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/04/no...nt_at_part.html

OsGOD 3 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 (edited) He has a young son who was interested in seeing a game - and Saturday's afternoon game, a 3 p.m. start time, is perfect for families. Essentially, he gave his son a choice: Either pay the $144 for a pair of tickets about as far away from the ice as possible (plus the ubiquitous service charge) or devote that money to buying a Joe Thornton jersey (he's a fan of the big guy from St. Thomas). They decided to stay home and watch the game on TV. This quote stuck out to me... So very true... being an avid jersey collector, I would much rather put my money towards something that would last longer than 2hrs and 38mins... if given the choice. Last night was the first time I have actually ever been to the joe (and after watching the game really really really regretted spending the money on the tickets). Its a shame to feel that way, but it is the truth. Between the second and third periods, I went online to find tickets to Game 2. Just my luck: I could get 12 seats together in Section 225B. Unfortunately, I can't possibly find 11 friends who want to spend $90 a pop to sit in the corner of the upper level (and pay a $5.75 "convenience charge" for the privilege). Of course, if my buddies don't mind standing, they can pay $77 each -- plus that same $5.75 convenience charge. (Whoever heard of a convenience charge to stand up?) QFT and another funny thing... the Pistons are also having issues selling out their playoff games. Its Michigan people, its not the caring for the team that is lacking, its the GREEN in the wallets.! We were loud last night right up until the puck dropped and we saw how uninterested the Players were in achieving anything out of the game. Its a give take relationship and neither side was willing to give for something unearned. Edited April 27, 2007 by OsGOD

Yeah some of what he says is in the one I posted. Anyways, I was jus talking to my Dad *he works at DMC* and I asked him if the economy is really that bad..he says no it's not bad..it's horrible. He's worked in Detroit for over 30 years now so I think that says a lot. He was also telling me that the Illitch's NEED to lower ticket prices. It really is ridiculous. Horrible economy with over priced tickets is not a good mix.

Viperar 16 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 This is truly sad, because growing up and for the short period of time i actually lived in Michigan, the red wings were the end all be all of hockey. I loved them and loved the hype they created around town. To see this kind of atmosphere filling the arena is truly sad. I wanna say it might have to do with the economy, but what are all these corporate seats i always hear you guys talking about on here. Has the joe really become a whoring ground for companies to send employees that dont even enjoy hockey? If so that is truly sad, and im hoping one day that the joe can look like the saddledome as far as noise and fans...

Mr. I is placing the cost so high that yeah, only Corporate folks are the ones that can afford to buy a 41 game package and a 16 game package for the Playoffs. I don't know of a single fellow season ticketholder that actually accepted to pay the 16 post season package. I know there probably is some, but I haven't found a joe schmo non-corporate type that did it. However, the whole corporate complaint is moot now and has been since the lockout (that would be a vailid arguement between '97-'03 ) Anybody with $$'s can walk right up to the box office, Log into ticketmaster.com or call ticketmaster instead of typing on a message board or calling into a radio station to complain about the atmosphere or the lack of attendance there. Tickets ARE available and have been for several years now... people still complaining about Corporate types are just complaining. If I had the cash, offsides and I could have sat lower bowl for EVERY SINGLE home game of the regular season. (obviously that was being directed at you specificially vipe... just a generalization) People are not going because the Demand exceeds the supply its because the Cost exceeds the paycheck. A thing I noticed that canadian teams allow and/or use in their arena A LOT during the play is those stupid air horns, cow bells and those Oil Funnel horns. That makes the sound louder than it really is also. I for one don't cheer consistantly through the play as I am watching the game. I wil do the Lets Go Red Wings Clap Clap Clap... or yell, "Break His Head!" or clap when they clear the puck... but I don't go nutz alll the time throughout the game play. If the arena wanted fans to remain loud at all times (specifically those who don't allow noise makers) they wouldn't turn off the music midstream when the puck hits the ice. yankeebaddabing 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 It's horrible, the economy in michigan is low. There are plenty of redwings fans still in the building so why are they quiet. I live in texas and watch all the games but I only see a handful of fans trying to get up and get loud. We are HockeyTown damnit, The people should get loud and support the team, give them some inspiration by doing so!! Remember people the fans help take the away team off thier game. ( looks like a bunch of yuppies, drinking beer at the joe, so very sad considering we are HOCKEYTOWN) O.k I can breath now, I got it off my chest........... OsGOD 3 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 (edited) ... Remember people the fans help take the away team off thier game. ... Also remember that the home team as well as the away team can take the crowd right out of the game. The wings did absolutley NOTHING to demonstrate last night they hadn't packed in that game... the last 50mins the wings couldn't keep control of the puck for longer than a quick dump in and line change. They gave us no reason to cheer. The desperation of being down 2-0 in a game in the playoffs was not felt by the fans... They seemed complacent getting their arses handed to them last night.... how can you cheer for that, how can you get out of your seat and be excited when the team doesn't even want to be there? With all that said and my many many many times being at the joe... this was one of the worst games I have seen the wings play... especially in a playoff game. Games 1 3 and 5 last round had just about as many people but the team was energetic and the fans also thrived off of that. Its a give take relationship. datsyukismyfriend 4 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 the atmosphere at the joe is embarrassing. even if it's not sold out (which is quite embarrassing in and of itself) there are still 18,000 people there! make some damn noise!!!! calgary was amazing! i wish our attending fans had 1/4 that passion and verve. I almost thought about taking the train for a game but the logistics are too extreme. I attend what red wings games I can when they come out here (Last year vs Wash, this year vs Philly) but i know that doesnt help the wings in any way
Flip-check 6 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 Vipe, never think such a thing--surely your presence contributes to the spiritual whole of the Wings' success. So too do all fans discredit themselves and their part too early when there is not rain, but shine! I hold inspirational conferences at the university of your choice for a very very inspiring fee of $20k per. Talk with my agent for schedule availability. HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 I'd just like to clear one thing up about this whole situation. What's going on with Michigan, the economy, the over priced tickets..etc does not in any way take away from what GREAT die hard, loyal fans the Wings have. Wings fans have always been known as one of the best in the NHL and I don't think any of whats going on right now should have an effect on that. You can bet anything that if the Wings were to lower their prices, tickets would sell out every game, and if they were to win the Cup, you'd see around a million or so fans being there to celebrate and cheer them on. Just sayin'...
Zetterberg is the man!! 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2007 During the playoffs the Sabres have a huge TV outside the arena and I really think theres more people outside watching the game then there was yesterday at the Wings game . cincywingfan 1 Report post Posted April 28, 2007 It makes me sad too. After college I had to leave MI. It's just too bad about the economy. I miss MI, even the lake effect snow at times. Even though the lack of support at the Joe is reality, the Wing's fan are still strong in number and spirit. LET'S GO RED WINGS.....LET'S GO RED WINGS.....LET'S GO RED WINGS..... OsGOD 3 Report post Posted April 28, 2007 Eventhough the JLA doesn't sell out nightly now... its nice to see that the arenas around still have a STRONG following for wings fans... That to me shows just how spread out and strong (albeit some just bandwagon) our fan base really is. Hardly ever is there a greater number of opposition jerseys in an arena than when the wings are in town Regrettably we did not, as the article suggested, score a goal last night. And yeah that had A LOT to do to the lack of enthusiasm as well What was there to cheer at... oh yeah BEER GUY, YOU ROCK!

Hiei 192 Report post Posted April 28, 2007 You know what, You fans who can't cheer out of the blue, Gimme your goddamn tickets and i'll find someone who'll f***in cheer. After all, Did Edmonton's fans give up after losing some last year? Were they not down 0-2 to this very San Jose team to cheer, boost up the team, and BEAT SAN HOES EH IN 6??? COME ON NOW. You current fans that are in there have to at least do something... Maybe because all the fans that are in there are all 40+ and "have to protect their hearing" or some other BS. COME ON. ******* DO SOMETHING. Too goddamn lazy to even get an Airhorn and press a button. I don't care what your economy is or isn't. 18,000 fans is still more than some houses can even hold. I'm gonna use this too. Look at CHICAGO. They shouldn't have made the SCF in 1994, but THEY DID. and was there one fan sitting on their hands doing nothing at old Chicago Stadium? NO! THEY WERE JUMPING STANDING AND CHEERING!!! Detroit, don't tell me that you can't do it either. and the last time they made the playoffs, 2001 if i remember, they loaded up the United Center, 20,500 Strong and they made it louder and better than Chicago Stadium....Yea, If the Hawks got some ownership that wanted to win, UC would be louder than CS, RBC Center, and Rexall Place combined. The atmosphere in Michigan in general regarding the Wings is disgusting. It's a "WIN THE CUP OR THE TEAM SUCKS. FIRE THE COACH. FIRE THE GM" mentality. Seriously, I recall watching most of the first round match ups this year and every building but the Joe seemed to be absolutely rocking. Even the Islanders(lost both games at home) , the Thrashers(Lost both games at home), the Penguins(Lost both games at home) all had more enthusiastic fans than we have at the Joe. Heck, the Rangers are now down 2-0 to the Sabres, and I can guarantee you that the Garden will be rocking tomorrow night. Meanwhile, the Tigers make it the World Series and the entire state thinks its the second coming of christ or something. If the wings made it to the finals, do you think there would be any celebration? Nope. SAN HOES EH
Crazy4Wings 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2007 (edited) I grew up in Michigan and have always been a Wings fan. Everytime I have been to the Joe it has always been quiet. Even when the place is packed. Now that I live in Northern California I have been to the shark tank and that crowd is nuts, they never shut up. I don't think they even know what they are cheering about. It's always been my opinion that the fans at the Joe are more educated about the game and really following the play and therefore not as loud. At least that's what I tell people here when they ask why it's so quiet there. Edited April 28, 2007 by Crazy4Wings
