SJCheechoo14 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 I was wondering if fans are aloud to go to the red wings practices. Cause here in San Jose we can go watch most of them and talk to the players afterwards. Is there a practice facility in Detroit that allows fans to watch the wings? In my opinion it is really awesome cause you get to know the people on your team and get to see how they prepare for games.
norrisnick 1 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 The Wings are quite possibly the worst media/public relations team in the league. Completely take the fans for granted. I believe they have one open practice a year.

I believe they have one open practice a year. One a year ????? Wow , thats terrible. The flames had like 11 or 12 open practise this year. It was pretty cool to go , But it was the flames , so that kinda ruined it Anyways , That sucks , there should be way more then that

I believe they have one open practice a year. OUCH! The ducks are exactly the opposite, very fan friendly and will sign for anyone and their grandmother. All of this thanks to Brian Burke who makes it happen. Plus Anaheim Ice is almost always open to the public.
Offsides 21 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 One a year and don't you have to be a member of the overly priced RED WINGS WORLD? At least that is how we got to go.

HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 They practice July, August, and September at Troy Sports Center a lot, and sometimes during the season. It's always an open practice there, and afterwards you can talk to the players, get their sigs, take pics with them..etc. As for the JLA it's only once or twice a year. SJCheechoo14 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 aye..that kinda sucks...I think sharks open almost all of them except for the playoffs and you can just walk up to the players afterwards and they are really nice. They let you take pictures with them and everything. Even the GM talks to the fans. You guys should protest or something...lol

All of this thanks to Brian Burke who makes it happen. Plus Anaheim Ice is almost always open to the public. The difference is...if the Red Wings had open practices all the time, there would be absolutely no concentration possible for the players. There would be a constant mob. And whether or not the Wings have an open practice or not has nothing to do with whether or not they are autograph friendly. Brett Hull was kind enough to give me an autograph when I met him at Blockbuster. The same with Robert Lang when I met him at cheeburger cheeburger, Steve Yzerman was Class A (not really a surprise) when he took his citizenship test at Bloomfield Hills Middle School some odd years ago, and my roomate from college who is Ukrainian/Russian hung out with Pavel Datsyuk twice at a Russian club in Pontiac. SJCheechoo14 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 I think the fans would respect the team. We don't mob the sharks and we have a pretty crazy fan base. I think the wings should open their practices more.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 (edited) The Wings are probably the nicest group of guys anyones going to meet. They are very autograph friendly and will take pics with everyone as well. There have been times where they've just got out of the gym *upstairs at Troy Sports Center* and they were all sweaty and they came and signed everything for us even though they were out of breath and worn out. LOL in September I asked Langer for a pic and he was like "Let me go change first then I'll come back" *he was really sweaty and everything* haha and so some friends and myself waited for like 20 minutes and he came out and took pics with u all. He was absolutely nice about it. He could of EASILY gone through the back door in their locker room and totally dissed us, but he didn't. I've been so fortunate in that every Wings player I've met has been so down to earth. Great bunch of guys. They absolutely love their fans, and they mention it often. tipetz22 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 Here in ATL the Trashers have open practices to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays when they are in town. Their practive facility is like five minutes from my apartment. Too bad practice is at 2 or 3:30 in the afternoon, when I'm at work. It would be interesting to see a practice. Every single practice they come out sweaty and tired and sign and take pictures with us. they even sign some whien they are in their gear next to the rink. It really surprises like you said how down to earth these guys are. The players even joke around and talk with us. I remember it was a month ago I met Joe Thornton at the practice and his cell phone rang and he got off just to take a picture with us and sign some things.(that is actually the same picture that is on my profile thingy) Another time my friend was all set to take a picture with Vesa Toskala and I couldn't get the camera to work and I was apologizing and stuff and he was just like it's no problem I don't mind waiting and he was even joking with me about it. Hockey players are the best athletes. Edited May 16, 2007 by SJCheechoo14
oilandwingsfan 3 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 well at least there's that one open practice the Wings have. the Oilers don't have anything like that.. the only thing that we get to see is the annual Superskills (but you still have to pay for that haha)... and the team autograph session but thats about it. most of the Oil are pretty nice though.. we usually wait around after games and most of them will sign. i wish we would have an open practice one day! but once we did sneak into the morning skate before the Ducks/Oil game back in november.. 'cause someone left the side door unlocked and we just went in hahaha
SLASHedVelvet 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2007 I don't know about while in their hometown but when the wings were on their californoia road trip in january, I went and watched them practice at Healthsouth Arena(same place kings practice) and they all came out after the game and I got many of them to sign my jerseys including Lids, Dom and Hank. Guest snowman89 Report post Posted May 17, 2007 I dont wanna go out on a limb here and make some statements without knowing for sure, but Cheechoo? have you been to detroit? Do you realize how big hockey is here? This is not the hockey "crazy" town of san jose. It would not be possible to open the practices, there would simply be too many people. If you want accessability to the team, go Traverse City during there training camp. You can go to the bars nightly with the players it is great.

But i do understand, I've been to a few where the crowds got pretty huge and i know that Red Wings have a lot of devoted fans that would probably go to the practices,,and the crowds probably would get kinda crazy. The Wings get seriously mobbed by their fans. I kinda feel bad for them at times. You go to an autograph signing for any player and there are literally over a thousand with the lines going outside and wrapped around several buildings. Also, when they practice at Troy it's crazy. EVERYONE goes by their locker room after practice so the second they leave it's like BOOM everyone comes outta nowhere and asks for sigs, pics..etc.. they get stalked. Literally. People chase 'em in the parking lots. LOL Edited May 17, 2007 by HockeyCrazy3033

That's why when players like Big Joe start checking a lot I hate when fans from other teams call them goons. When people called Joe a goon I laughed. Outside hockey he is like a big teddy bear. He wouldn't hurt a fly. And from what i've heard the red wings are the same way. They all seem like a nice bunch as well Edited May 17, 2007 by SJCheechoo14

viking58 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2007 (edited) I went the the Only one of the year, it was for Hockey Day back in February, I am also a member of RWW and they totally droped the ball and did not have one this year, and also have not promised on any of the promised features. Total waste of $40. At the open practice I was sitting right next to the tunnel on the side of the bench, after practice Hudler handed me a practice puck! GO Wings!
