Alfie Goes Unhinged

Wow...I thought Jamie McLennan's "chop shop" on Franzen was the lowest moment in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I couldn't believe Alfredsson would blatantly shoot the puck at the legs of Scott Niedermeyer in the closing seconds of the 2nd period. That's like deliberately "head-hunting" a batter in baseball or tackling a guy who is making a lay-up in basketball. That was pure ugliness on the part of Alfredsson. If that puck made direct contact on a knee...Niedermeyer would be out for the series and into the hospital to repair damaged bone material.

To top it off, he cheap shots Travis Moen with a direct punch. I really think the league should suspend Alfredsson for Game 5. Not that it will make a difference because Anaheim is going to win this series anyway.

If I were coach Murray in Ottawa, I would remove the "C" off Alfredsson's jersey and give it to either Chris Neil or Mike Fisher. Those guys are more worthy of the captain position in Ottawa in my opinion.

I hope you're kidding...this is nothing like tackling someone doing a layup or throwing a ball at a someone's head. Neidermayer was facing the play and saw the puck coming. Unless that shot goes really high nothing's going to happen. You've also got to realize that the two things you've compared it to never happen, whereas players have pucks flying at them constantly, and are prepared for it equipment-wise. What Alfredsson may or may not have done is fodder for discussion, but is really no comparison to the McLennan chop or even the Pronger elbows. Sure, Alfredsson's the captain for years, but let's take the Captain's C off him for this? Please...he didn't get a penalty for the shot or the face-wash "punch" that the Duck player dove on--there will be no suspension. What game were you watching out there?

Classless move by Alfie. I expect better from him. You do not EVER intentionally shoot the puck at another player, it just isn't done.

Give me a break. The guy tried to get his team fired up. Nobody got hurt. Nobody got hit in the head. Nobody received stitches, or was knocked out.

There's a reason that defensemen wear shin protectors.

Yeah, it wasn't cool or whatever, but it's nowhere in the league of a blindsided, cheapshot to someones head

Aye, neids better bow out from blockin' shots if he couldn't take that one. I am sure he has been hit harder by pucks, seein' how is defense. Neids gettin' hit in the face, then we will have somethin' t' discuss. Savvy?

Ahoy, players aim at refs all the time... Fans cheer, no penalties

sayin' that this play is Worse than the hit on holmer... you should be keel-hauled

I can't really tell if this is serious or not.

If it's sarcastic, it's pretty funny.

If it's serious, it's just ridiculous.

I watched it, he ment to do it, and it was stupid. he should have the C taken off. he also shouldn't be aloud to finish the playoffs. what he did he did to hurt someone. there isn't a place for that in hockey

I saw it as well, and it was intentional and classless. I lost a lot of respect for Alfredsson for that alone. That being said, McLellan's cheapshot on Franzen was way worse than this. Yes it was bad, but don't kid yourself into thinking this was worse with how low he kept the puck. McLellan chopped at Franzen with a goalie stick straight to the chest.

Don't get me wrong, it was terribly stupid. But I don't think he was trying to hurt Niedermeyer.

<_< Who cares?

The way Anaheim cheap shots guys, goons it up and has forced hockey back to the days of clutching and grabbing ... boo hoo and cry me a river. And the press saying Niedermayer doesn't usually get involved in scrums, he must've been real mad? Yeh, dude will dish out borderline calls, but how dare anyone take a shot at him. Whatever. Memo to Chris Neil - you might only have one game left to make your mark on this series. ;)

1994 - Pronger suspended 4 games for hitting Capitals forward Pat Peake in the throat with his stick. (funny thing is Burke was the one who suspendded him)

1998 - Pronger suspended 4 games for slashing Phoenix's Jeremy Roenick in the helmet.

2001 - Pronger suspended 1 game for leaving the bench and instigating a fight with Kelly Buchberger.

2002 - Pronger suspended 2 games for cross checking Brenden Morrow. The cross check left Morrow bleeding near one of his eyes.

2004 - Pronger suspended 1 game for kicking Ville Nieminen. (kicking? How wussy can you get?)

2007 - Pronger suspended 1 playoff game for his double elbow to the back of Holmstrom's head.

2007 - Pronger suspended 1 playoff game for his elbow to the head of McAmmond.

Yeah, clearly Pronger wouldn't even stoop as low as to fire a puck at a guy's ankles.

Not savvy, stupid, cowardly and cheap. If you have a problem on the ice, you don't shoot a puck at your opponent, you drop your gloves, give your opponent a chance to drop his, and challange him straight up the way it's been done for the past century or so.

this isn't about Pronger's habitual elboys to the head, it isn't about Franzen, it's about Alfredson. We can condemn what he did as wring without having to discuss weather it was better or worse than every other cheapshot in the history of the game.

Exactly.

It was a stupid cheap move by Alfredsson, but there's some hyperbole here in exactly how bad it was and what should happen to him.

Aye, ye don't shoot the opponent in th' knees. Ye go for th' kill Dead men tell no tales.

All hands ahoy... Grab ye Cutlass!

Scallywag Pronger went for the kill and failed.

Stupid? For sure. Cowardly? Absolutely. Cheap? I'm not so sure on that one. People are blowing this so far out of proportion it's unbelievable. This is HOCKEY, and he shot a puck at him. He didn't slash him in the face, he didn't kick him, he didn't do anything heinous that could actually hurt somebody. HE SHOT A ******* PUCK AT HIS LEGS. It really wasn't a big deal, and people need to let it go.

I will say, the diving on both sides is getting beyond ridiculous though.

It was dumb no doubt. Classless? Perhaps. However do not suggest he is a bigger goon than Pronger. Defenseman have taken slapshots off their shins since they were little kids. I'm damn sure if he wanted to shoot higher he could have. But it was uncalled for, give Heatley the C. Repeatedly going after players heads though is WAY worse in my book.

Alfredsson has always been a bit on the gutless side. He usually throws hits (and as we saw last night, gloved sucker-punches) when his opponent either can't defend himself, or isn't looking.

The guy definitely picks his spots and it's about time people took notice of it. He isn't as squeaky clean as the Ottawa media would have one believe.

Nobody is saying what Krusty did was on the goon level like Pronger's hit (Chris Neil is another story), but it was a classless thing to do. It's a respect thing, there's certain things you don't do on the ice and needlessly firing a puck at an opponent is right up there.

Stop comparing it to Pronger, it's a different type of play we're dealing with.

Hey, I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention the game last night and having a hard time remembering what went on.

(Is there a vid on youtube yet?)

But basically everyone is agreed that it was on purpose? After alfie sniped that corner goal I am sure he can put that puck exactly where he wants it. I didn't really see it, just the fighting that went on after it.

:D "Not Even Pronger Would Stoop This Low" :D

Holy s*** that is priceless!
