NHL Attendance 2006-2007

I always like sorting by percentage.

The bottom two are Chicago and St. Louis. From personal experience that doesn't surprise me.

What surprised me was attending Wings games in Chicago and St. Louis last year that it was so sparse.

That's when I found it surprising.

Oh wow, what's more interesting to me is the road percentage.

Top draw - the Rangers, worst - Predators.

I'm really surprised the Wings aren't higher. I expected them to easily be in the top 10, or even in the top 5.

Hopefully people will shut the hell up about sellouts in Detroit now. We're number 2 in overall attendence in the LEAGUE. Why? Because we are some of the most passionate fans on the earth. And we LOVE our Red Wings!

so the bottom 10 in attendance every season should just be contracted or moved? great logic! in 3 years there wouldn't be a league anymore.

Do I really have to explain, once again, why Nashville is such a horrible hockey market?

I'll leave it to one simple fact: The Predators were one of the top teams in the league this year. They had quite a few all-star players on the team. And they still couldn't sellout.

Sorry if my statements offend the die hard fans like you, but if you want me to stop, maybe you guys could start actually going to the games? Since, you know, seeing as you have probably the cheapest tickets in the league (next to the Florida Panthers).

Ah... I lost a bet on how long it would take for this statement to come up. :P Time to pay out my $1.

It was bound to come up eventually. See, if I wouldn't have said it, someone else would have. :P

Nice post. Interesting stuff. Would be nice if there was a way to measure how exciting or passionate the different arenas were. I live in Ohio so I don't get to go to the Wings games in person but from watching on TV it seems as if the crowds at the Joe have become more and more boring. I think there are too many corporate types and not enough passionate fans. I was blown away at the Calgary crowds and the energy and enthusiasm they showed during the playoffs.

A lot has to be position of the mics and the closeness to the crowd in the various arenas. In person the joe is just fine atmosphere wise.

As Auxlepli mentioned earlier, really surprised the Wings weren't even a top 10 draw on the road. All the other years listed show the Wings as the top road percentage team. I wonder if Yzerman was the real reason why other cities had such good attendance whenever Detroit was in town.

I know. It seems like Jersey has always had a hard time getting fans to the games, no matter how good they are.

And as much fun as it is to bash Nashville's attendance, there's two other markets there with pretty good teams who drew less fans.

I've said many times that I personally don't think New Jersey should have a team. It's not really a big time hockey area (I know, it is close to New York, but it still isn't), and the only time there are any fans other than the die hards are when the Rangers and Islanders are bad. That's it.

Who else are you referring to as a second market that had a good team but had bad attendance? Atlanta? As far as good teams go, there really weren't that many (other than Nashville and New Jersey) that didn't draw well.

good one.

Our tickets are only $3 below league average. They've gone up a lot in the last 2 years, next year they might even be above average.

And then you talk about the fans not going. Maybe you should research a little first. It's basically ONLY fans that go to games in Nashville. We're barely getting any corporate support. In fact last season there were only 1,800 season tickets sold to corporations, yet we still averaged 13,800 in paid attendance. That means that 12,000 average joe fans were paying for tickets to every game. We started out the franchise with 4,000 corporate tickets. If we had that extra 2,200 tickets that have dropped off since then, we would have averaged 16,000 paid last season.

If you click the picture in my signature, it will take you to "Our Team Nashville". This is a group that is trying to rally corporate support again, their goal for this summer is to sell an additional 3,000 season tickets to Nashville businesses. From what i've heard, they're somewhere around halway to that goal. And the best part is that the half season and partial season packages haven't even gone on sale yet. They should be out next week and then you'll see the numbers really jump up.

In fact the rally is planned for next thursday, and i'm sure that we'll get an update on season ticket numbers next friday morning, so in one week i'll be back here to let you know how it went. Don't be surprised when we blow away the 14k paid mark next season.

Oh yeah, there's also talk that Todd Wagner might be joining the local group in their bid to buy the Preds. There's also some guy who used to play for the Colts and now has a successful business and owns an arena 2 team who wants in. This is along with filthy rich Nashvillians from the medical sector who are heading the group. The best news is that they said they aren't looking for any more investors to join their group meaning that they feel like their offer is good enough to buy the team. Don't be surprised when the Predators are sold to the local group and everyone's dreams of moving this team are shot down.

The only reason the general public is interested now is because the team is in danger of moving. If everything was all ok, and Leipold decided to keep the team, it would be the same thing every year. Nobody would really care all that much.

If Nashville keeps it's team, then good for you. I won't have a problem with it if you actually start selling out games while being an elite team.
