Hossa a hero

Marcel Hossa played the role of hero back in his native Slovakia, helping save a man's life after fellow NHLer Branko Radivojevic and a friend fought off the gang who attacked the man. Our friend DaTel sends in this translation of a report on the incident from Pravda.sk [warning: do not open the link if the sight of blood disturbs you -- there is a very graphic photo of the bloody knife used in the attack at the top of the story]:

"Hockey stars Marcel Hossa along with Branko Radivojevic probably saved the life of a 39 year old man who was attacked in Trencin on Saturday by a group of young neo-nazis. There were about 20 skinheads in the square around midnight. Half of them attacked a local citizen, cut the man's throat, and stabbed him in the back. Officials have no idea about what caused the incident. After the initial attack, the man fell to the ground. The aggressors started kicking him and jumping on him.

"At that very moment, Radivojevic and a friend of his came to the rescue. They fought the attackers and forced the skinheads to run away in no time. The entire incident took about 20 seconds. Afterwards, both guys along with Marcel Hossa took the wounded man to the hospital. Doctors found shards of the knife he was stabbed with close to his spinal chord. The attacked man is now out of danger. Radivojevic declined to comment on the matter. 'Until the investigation's over, I will not comment,' said the Minnesota Wild forward."

Wow, what a great story. Just proves once again why hockey players are the best of all pro-athletes in sports.

That's amazing how Radivojevic and Hossa were able to do that themselves. They are both great people for what they did.

Okay I will play devil's advocate here:

This story won't be broadcast on ESPN or Fox Sports, or MSNBC , etc..etc...

two reasons:

1.) It relates to the NHL

2.) It's a "good" story

That being said , I've known all along hockey players are by far and away much more classy than athletes from the "big 3". Good for Hossa!

20 Neo Nazi's fought off by 2 guys?

How does that happen?

A superior work-out regiment and strong work ethics combined with a s***-load of heart and compassion.

Oh and it's a known fact that neo-nazi's eat McDonalds all of the time and sleep a lot so they are quite out of shape.

On a serious note, that is a great story. I don't think that the American media would just ignore it because it is related to the NHL, but that it just happened in Slovakia.... The sports media is crappy when it comes to euro-news.

This reminds me of a story about a former Bruin that went by the nickname "Axe". Why? Because one day, after leaving a bar, he saw a man chasing a woman with a full-blown axe. The NHLer ran after the guy, tackled him, pummled him and then sat on him while puffing on a cigarrette until police arrived.

I can't remember this guys name but I'll try to find it Don Cherry's autobiography.

i don't know if anyone else looked, but if you check out that knife, it looks COMPLETELY photoshopped.

it doesn't even appear to be a knife smeared with fake blood and placed on pavement. the ENTIRE image looks fake. not that any of this matters, just food for though.

on a better note, way to go to these two. hockey players rule all.

Way to step up Hossa!

This is the type of stuff that gives professional hockey players the rep that they rightfully deserve.

Greatest atheletes/people both on and off the ice.

And yet where is this story on ESPN?

If that were an NBA or NFL player it would be all over their news.

Great story. I wonder if the guys over at ESPN (PTI, Sportscenter, etc.) will give this any airtime.

In hockey, player stops gang from killing man with knife, in football, player leads gang and kills man with knife!

If PTI does give it airtime, then it will follow the story with the ceremonious "nobody cares about the NHL because we don't care" joke. f*** PTI.

Nice story.

Michael Vick's dogs would have chomped some neo-nazi asses.

(I don't know.. some sort of dog fighting joke seemed appropriate.)

_______________\\

Second joke:

Too bad he can't save his brother from having to play for the Thrashers...

*tap tap*

Is this thing on?
