Take off the red and white glasses dude. I understand that you're a Red Wings fan and want to believe Downey won, but it makes you look a bit silly thinking that. I wish Downey won too... but the facts remain the same.

Downey was dazed and confused... he was seeing little birdys flying around his head after that fight. His take down on Roy was a defending attempt to get the beating to stop... he just wanted the refs to end the fight because he was knocked silly.

Roy laid on a hell of beating and I bet Downy is feeling like s*** today. Roy is probably at the gym getting ready for the next game feeling good.

I'm with you man... I wish Downey didn't get his ass beat too... but he did. Kudos for Downey for trying to fight tho.

You're funny. If you knew me at all I'm the first person to call anybody, anywhere a homer. I pride myself on not being a homer. This has nothing to do with which jerseys each guy is wearing. Each guy landed a couple decent shots, about 2-3 each. All the punches to Downey's back? Is that what did Downey in? Its a decisional win for Downey for 1. Dropping Roy to his knees with that first big left hand and 2. For outmuscling Roy to the ice. I'm a fight fan. I can call a fight correctly without bringing home team advantage into play.

"Downey was dazed and confused", "little birdy's"

= zero credibility.

I played one season with a tighter jersey, I ended up usually leaving my elbow pads on the bench if the game was getting ruff, so thhat if I had to fight I could move my arms better. After that season I made sure hey ordered jerseys that were a couple sizes too big.

Interesting, I never thought to leave my elbow pads. I played defense so for me, I felt it pivotal in tough stretches of a game to have them when going back to retrieve a puck. They were too important to my protection to leave them. Plus, I wore hard-caps so I had a tendency to get them up high on forecheckers to back them off. Still, that's a good idea if you're on the bench and you know the next shift you are going to go after the puck drop.

OUCH! I just wanted to watch the video again and Downey was Roy's lil ***** in that fight. Downey was a rag doll and didn't connect any good solid hits. I see he hit the back Roys helmet... which hurts Downey worse than Roy.

Downey was a rag doll out there man.. Watch the video again. Roy beat him down.

If throwing down a player after he got his senses knocked out of him is consider a "Edge" Then I guess fighting in NHL is easy to win.. just trip someone and get the "Automatic Win".

Yeah that fight isn't that good. I still give kudos to Downey for trying. But I wouldn't want him signed because he lost a fight.

Now I get it. This is all for fun. You don't even believe what you're saying so why should we? Ha, ha, jokes on us. You got us all riled up for nothing. :P We're onto you!

PS: When Downey hit Roy with that first left over the top and Roy's knees buckled and he went down for a second, was that from getting punched solidly in the face or was Roy staring at the most beautiful women in the stands and his knees got weak?

Wow. Moron.

Very intelligent and classy! Why can't we have more Wing fans like you

Okay, now I get it! Let me go put on my Yzerman jersey and watch the fight again. That must be the missing element here. :yowza:

Its right there in the video clip. Right after Roy throws his 1st two lefts to Downey's back, he throws a 3rd left under that catches Downey on the side of the face and simultaneously Downey comes over the top with his own left and catches Roy on the right side of his face and it buckles his knees.

You can deny all you want. Everybody has seen the clip. Its right there. You not seeing it is all the proof I need that i'm speaking to somebody who knows less about fighting than me and may also need an eye exam.

I'm all for a fighter. After watching Downey's fights, does anyone else think that the guy has 1 freaking move? Same move every fight.

I'm not trying to start an argument, just wondering if anyone else thought that.

Wow, I didnt realize Downey had power like that. I mean yeah, he did get blasted a few times too, but Downey had so much behind his punches, that it looked like Roy was gonna drop, not once, but twice. All in all this was a even fight. Definitely a draw. But seeing how much power Downey has behind those punches sure does put a smile on my face. However, If it has to come down to signing one guy, I still want Brent Sopel. But great job to Downey!

Not trying to be a jerk but have you watched any preseason games? the ones i've seen he's looked awful and the kids have been looking a lot better than him IMO.

I caught like 3/4 of the game against the Pens in Pittsburg. Other than that, I havent seen even one second of pre-season action. Plus, I never said anything about Downey being better than any of our young guys. I was simply commenting on the fight(ya know, the thing that no other Red Wing will do) and about how I was suprised to see that Downey had that much mustard behind his punches. I said nothing about signing him, I said nothing about his other hockey skills. I just gave him props on the fight. In fact, I went on to say that I STILL dont think he's the guy to sign. So easy there buddy. Im with you. I would rather see one of the kids out there as well.

Oh yes, I'm a troll

It wasn't the greatest tilt ever, but definitely the best in a while by a guy wearing a Wings jersey, that's for certain.

I didn't see his name on the list of cuts, so I gots a feeling he may actually wind up with a roster spot. Considering Downey stepped up to Roy, who has both height and weight advantage over him, AND held his ground, he doesn't look like a bad choice for the 14th roster spot.

Wait that wasn't THE Jesse Boulerice that was Carolina's enforcer during the cup run was it?

On the walk to the box all Boulerice could here was tiny little Mickey's flying around his head saying "YA gotta keep ya hands up Rock!!"

Alright folks calm down. I know it has been YEARS since we wings fans have had ANY type of a enforcer. Downey is a decent fighter, not great. He has a short reach, yet is still willing to stick up for his teammates. Even if that means going against someone like Worrell. Ya, he got pounded but he is alot smaller than him. Anyway back to this fight, It's been awhile I know, but it is called a DRAW. Yes Downey got the takedown. But it is still a draw. ;)

Anyone have Clark's fight?

"Of course not. This one was WAYYY better.

Downey : Heart and Soul Fighter against a true-to-god heavyweight."

Wow suprise suprise coming from someone with a swedish flag as an avatar. ha ha, wow, Downey lost? you guys are f*cking crazy, I am not even going to bother arguing anymore it is evident you are unwilling to give the guy credit whatever he does. Just like Norton beat Roy last year, Downey beat Roy, end of story.

Pretty good fight, surely the best I've see from a wing in awhile. rather even all around, Roy had the best flurry and owned the middle of the fight while Downey did better while they were still at arms reach, would have given the tilt to Roy had Downey not scored the Ippon (Judo reference.) Pretty obvious draw in my opinion.

I also feel like adding that one of the things I like about Downey is while he's a decent enforcer, he's a good sized one too. Sizable but not so large that he puts himself out of the weight class of most cheap shot artists.

I swear, what school of fighting did most of you go to? The one I went to says that when each guy lands roughly the same shots its a draw.

That same school also says that when each guy lands equal shots, the guy who buckles the other guy's knees wins.

That same school also says that takedowns are not decisive enough to win a decision.

Here, Downey clearly buckles Roy's knees and then throws him down. Where I come from that's a 10-9 round. Roy knows he got his bell rung a bit there. Downey was no worse for wear.

PS: His helmet flying off is specatular to watch but think about that, Roy drilled him in the helmet and the helmet too the brunt of the blow. Whereas Downey landed flush enough on the face to wobble Roy's knees. That's why Downey gets the decision.

Vincanni, I addressed this to you because of your observation of Roy owning the middle of the fight. Do you mean the 3 lefts he delivered in quick succession? If you'll notice the 1st two lefts glance off Downey's upper back area. Those are not clean punches. The 3rd shot he adjusts and comes up under Downey's defense and then he pops off Downey's helmet. When he throws that punch though he left himself wide open for Downey to come over the top with the left that stunned Roy and buckled his knees. I would consider that entire episode to be the main portion of the fight and I don't think Roy owned it. I think it looked good on TV but glancing punches to the back do nothing.

I guess you missed both of the left hands that stunned Roy. The first one put Roy down on his knees but he got back up, the 2nd one you can clearly see stung him as it landed flush. Those 2 big punches plus the take-down, that's a decision win for Downey. Not an ass kicking by any means but a win is a win.

PS: I sometimes wonder how many people have been in alot of hockey fights (if any). FYI, those rapid fire shots Roy was delivering early in the fight........they are nothing. You can't get alot of power behind those punches and they are glancing blows that deflect of the shoulder pads and the back. It just looks impressive on the screen and the homer announcers look at it like he's giving Downey the beating of a lifetime. Believe me, I doubt Downey really felt any of those.

This is hockey, not MMA. The take-down usually occurs when one guy no longer wants to or is no longer able to effectively throw punches. It's a way to stop the fight. Not a way to win it.

I really think we need to sign him! He kind of reminds me of Lapointe, and he even wears the same number! I think this guy could protect Z and Dats. Lets face it Downey will drop the gloves with anyone and I think the Wings need that on the roster, I was so sick and damn tired of guys taking runs at our boys lastyear, that was our weakness, and we need to address it. SOOOOOOO lets do it!!!

I will tell you this. When we play the Preds this year, I expect Downey to take that peace of crap Tootoo to town.<that sounds funny

DAMN I HOPE SO, I live down here and thats all they talk about is how PooPoo wins fights, I always tell them "yeah until he fights someone, with that said, he will run from Downey, PooPoo is a coward!!!!

I'll only ask this one more time and then leave it.

Downey supporters: Would you at least agree (after watching his fights) that he has 1 move? The old "You swing first."

yes in most fights that i have seen, he does have them swing first. but it doesn't matter does it?
