Avalanche acquire Bacashihua from St. Louis

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche have acquired goaltender Jason Bacashihua from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft.

The Avs assigned Bacashihua to Lake Erie, the team's AHL affiliate in Cleveland.

Bacashihua, 25, had 3.17 goals-against average in four games with Peoria (AHL) this season. He is 7-17-4 with a 3.19 GAA and .897 save percentage in 38 career NHL games.

Not major news, but worth noting anyways. Hopefully this is a sign that trade season is starting to pick up, and there's more movement in the coming days.

If this is the Avs answer to their goaltending issues, then Im pretty happy. Although its doubtful it is. I wouldnt be surprised to see Gerber heading to the Avs possibly in exchange for a guy like Brunette.

no I mean the game that St. Lois went up 3 goals and let the Wings come back to go to overtime, and Pavel doing what he does best, make Bacashihua look like a fool and get the game winner.

And the only reason Jason was playing that night was because the night before that in St. Loius Manny Legace got his ass handed to him, but the Wings.

DETROIT (AP) -- Two shootout tries were decided by replay. Both calls went against the Detroit Red Wings.

Doug Weight scored the only goal of the tiebreaker -- a shot overturned on a review -- giving the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 win over the Red Wings on Saturday.

Weight's shot was originally ruled as a save, but then changed to a goal.

Dominik Hasek slid backward toward the goal line as he attempted to make the save. He tried to stop his momentum, and referee Dan Marouelli signaled no goal. But the puck found its way into the net.

"I got a lot on it, and the progression of his body is the rule," Weight said. "He has to stop with possession of the puck before it goes into the goal line. It's a tough thing for a goaltender. He was moving. As he stopped, the puck was rolling in. I was watching it."

Hasek thought he did enough to prevent a goal.

"The puck was somewhere under my pads. I looked at the referee and he was going, 'No goal.' At the same time, I sort of relaxed and the puck rolled over and into the net," he said. "If the ref didn't say anything, I'd say it was a goal. But he spread his hands and said it wasn't a goal."

Weight was St. Louis' final shooter in the three-round tiebreaker.

Dan Cleary, on Detroit's last attempt, was stopped by Jason Bacashihua on a similar play. That save also was reviewed, but upheld.

"I just tried to stop myself as close as I could to the goal line. The refs were right there," said Bacashihua, from the Detroit suburb of Garden City. "I opened my legs up, and the thing fell right in front of the goal line. It didn't go in. I didn't see it before that. I knew it was under me somewhere."

Cleary thought it was in.

"I thought that with him being in the net, the puck was in," he said. "But obviously the review was inconclusive. You know it's in, but you just can't see it."

Tomas Mojzis netted his first NHL goal and Brad Boyes also scored for St. Louis. Bacashihua made 40 saves.

It's the fourth time St. Louis has beaten Detroit this season. Three have been since Andy Murray took over as coach on Dec. 11, after Mike Kitchen was fired.

"They've got a great team, we have so much respect for what they do here," Murray said.

Jiri Hudler and Valtteri Filppula scored for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight and second consecutive by shootout. Hasek stopped 17 shots.

Red Wings defenseman Brett Lebda sustained a concussion and was carried off the ice on a stretcher early in the game after having his face rammed into one of the metal stanchions that support the glass behind the Detroit net.

Lebda was awake and doing fine, according to the Red Wings, and was taken to Detroit Medical Center for precautionary tests. He was knocked into the support by a forearm from St. Louis' Ville Nieminen. Lebda waved to the crowd as he was taken off.

"It's what's been going on the last month in the league," Cleary said. "You would think guys would have more respect for each other."

Lebda is the third Detroit player this season to sustain a concussion because of a hit to the head. The others were Jason Williams, now with Chicago, and Johan Franzen.

Nieminen received a major penalty for boarding and was ejected.

Filppula tied it at 2 on a rebound with 7:17 left in the third period.

Mojzis opened the scoring 4:36 in when he backhanded in his own rebound as a penalty was being called on the Red Wings. Boyes made it 2-0 with 7:47 left in the opening period. He scored his 17th goal, putting in a rebound.

St. Louis won the season series (4-3-1) over Detroit for the first time since 1997-98 . ... Detroit D Chris Chelios passed Johnny Bucyk and moved into ninth place on the NHL's career games list with 1,541.
