#19=Legend 29 Report post Posted November 8, 2007 Anyone watch it? If you watched last night there was a game they played a game called "Ottawa Senator or U.S. Senator" where they said names and they had to "guess" (because none of them had any idea) if it was hockey or politics. There were 3 questions and almost all of them got them wrong. It seems to me that they are doing this for fun, saying noone knows or even cares about hockey. This really pissed me off, anyone else? CupChamps979802 35 Report post Posted November 8, 2007 I saw this and i got so pissed. They act like hockey is the biggest joke ever. They don't even know who some of the best players are on one of the NHLs best teams. I would like to see how this would go over if they did this with an MLB or NFL team. Discuss Yes. However, I don't watch the same things they watch (Like Best Damn Sports Show, baseball, basketball, American Idol, etc) so it would stand to reason that they would not find my interests interesting, even though they proclaim to be a sports show. Those guys are boneheads. Even Dan Patrick would talk baseball all day on his show while the Stanley Cup Finals are going on, and there's still four and half months of baseball left, but only 6 hrs of hockey left! I think a bigger question would be why, in all these years, has Hockey Night in Canada not had a Wednesday night show like "This Week in the NHL" or something to tide the Canadians over till Saturday nite? Just show highlights and talk hockey and some personal stories or behind the scenes kinda stuff. I'd love that.

b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted November 9, 2007 This pisses me off, but Its proof of the unpopularity of Hockey in the U.S. mainstream that us rabid hockey fans don't understand. A guy needs steroids to sit in a cement bunker and wait to swing a bat three times, personal salary: 75 million Guy works his ass off a whole game, hitting, finesse play, speed, goals, team conhesion, fighting, team salary: 42 mil Sorry for baseball fans out there, but I've never understood its extreme level of popularity compared to hockey's low visibility. Funny how most people who post argument against hockey that I have met at least, have never watched a hockey game, EVER. People are ignorant and I don't see it changing when you turn on SportsCenter the morning after an insanely busy night of hockey (damn near every team playing, highlights galore) and instead you spend an hour watching 100 home runs that look the same, talk about A.Rod not coming back to the yankees, check in on T.O., some basketball highlights which seem selected at random since no single basket carries much significance until the last five minutes, and then they wrap. No mention of hockey and a league called the NHL even existing outside of the ticker on the bottom of the screen. I have to cut myself off because this topic will forever get my blood boiling, but you get my point....

On the contrary, popularity has a way of killing the very essence of the games you love. And I wish the NHL would stop trying to make the game more popular with all the goofey things they are doing. Just play good old fashioned hockey and those that like it watch, those that don't like it, don't watch. As for baseball, out of all the sports I played as a kid, it was the only sport where I liked practice more than the games. The games were way too frikin slow, but the practices were great. You get to run down 10 fly balls in a row, and you get to hit 25 pitches in a row. I put myself thru college by laying asphalt. We joked that the city workers always had only one guy working, the rest of them standing around watching him. Well, baseball is like city work, you got one guy doing all the work with everyone else standing around watching him.
EuroTwinLove40 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2007 I actually thought it was a little comical. John Salley (i think it was him, or maybe it was someone else, i don't really remember) said "Well I don't think there are very many Martin's that play hockey!" ummmm are you kidding!? I can think of like 5 right off the top of my head. Martin is definitely a hockey player name! Haha. Clearly, John Salley is not a hockey fan.

Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted November 9, 2007 (edited) We've got some real Sensitive Sally's here. No kidding. It's a simple little word called entertainment. I don't see why every time something is mentioned about the NHL, and it's not a bending over ass-backwards compliment, it's the end of the world. Maybe if the NHL wasn't such a terrible league in terrible shape run by an idiotic moron, people wouldn't make fun of it so much. ...and really, I don't think you watch BDSSP very much. Although hockey isn't their favorite topic of conversation, they have guys like JR and Avery on from time to time. They just choose to make fun of the NHL because, frankly, it's pretty easy to. The NHL, and hockey for that matter, is the least popular sport in the US as a whole, next to soccer. Who the hell do you think makes 75 mil a year in the MLB? Why, Barry Bonds and A-Rod of course! And besides Martin Gerber, who were the other 2 people they mentioned in the game. Alfredsson and Gerber were the only players they mentioned. The other ones were US senators. But hey... one of the knew who former Penguins goaltender Tom Barrasso was! And he hasn't played in the NHL in almost 4 years. So... I guess they do know something about hockey. I always enjoy these a good rant about stuff like this, though. It's pretty entertaining that some people get so offended by the fact that not everyone likes what they like. jerm8352 3 Report post Posted November 9, 2007 Why would you get pissed off? It's true, most people in the US don't care about hockey. That's why none of the sports shows talk about it. They want people to watch the show and MLB, NFL, and NBA and college sports are far more popular and will get more people to watch than the NHL. The NHL is being driven into the ground and this kind of stuff will just continue to happen until Bettman has successfully turned it into ice dancing with sticks. Guest jaytan Report post Posted November 9, 2007 It just sounds like they made themselves look like idiots. Not only are they professional sports commentators who know nothing about the pro team playing the best sports around right now, but they're Americans who don't know who their senators are.
