Ducks acquire Sutherby from Caps

For a 2nd round pick.

Sutherby is a gritty, 6'-3", 215 lb agitating, defensively repsonsible forward who can play both center and wing.

The Ducks get bigger and tougher.

Yup. I can only think that Marchant's injury is worse than they thought. And he could possilby line up on the wing on the top 2 lines with Bert being out - but that's doubtful.

Bigger and tougher? Why would anybody want to go and do that? Yeah, like being big, strong, tough and hard to play against really helped the Ducks at all last year. Bunch of losers. They don't have nearly enough skilled, non-fighting Europeans on their roster to ever win a Cup. Nobody wins cups by combining skill with toughness. Burke is a nutjob. Ducks are done!!!

So, Burke gives away Bryzgalov to a division rival for nothing then trades a 2nd rounder for a guy who was a healthy scratch on the worst team int he league? Guess it could work out.

In 05-06, Sutherby was well worth a 2nd rd pick easy. Guys who are tough and score 14 goals are a premium. Still young at 25 yrs old, this is one of those risk/reward moves. At worst, even if he just stays with what he did last season, you still only traded a pick about 1 rd too high. Didnt they get a bunch of picks from Edmonton too for Penner anyway? I dont remember what, but that would lesson the risk if they had extras.

Could work out to be a really nice acquisition, we'll see.

Usually, I'd say this is a good move. He gave up a 2nd round pick for a 4th line energy guy. Meh.

Sutherby still has plenty of potential. He was a 1st round pick of Washington back in 2000 (26th overall), and he's a good skater for his size. Plus, you'll have the possibility to get 15, maybe even 20 goals out of him, even considering he's a tough guy. Players like that are a rare breed in today's NHL.

I have a feeling that, with the system the Ducks play, Sutherby will do well with them.

Couldn't agree more, Lou. The fact that Anaheim got 3 picks from Edmonton for Penner (including a potential #1 overall pick if Edmonton finishes in last place) gave them some leveridge as far as draft picks are concerned. Sutherby really doesn't put them in a cap bind, either. He makes less than 1 million, and if he doesn't pan out, he'll be an unrestricted free agent at seasons end.

This deal works out well for the Ducks, because as I mentioned, Sutherby is the type of player that will fit in well with the Ducks system. Washington is more of a finesse team (other than Brashear and Erskine), and didn't really fit in with them.
