imisssergei 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 TSN reports that he has cleared re-entry waivers. Was this on TV? I checked the site, they didn't have anything. If he did clear, I don't understand the move. Why put him on re-entry waivers so soon after waiving him if there wasn't another team to pick him up?

I beleive the point was so they can send him to the minors and only be on the hook for half of his salary, but I could be wrong.
imisssergei 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 TSN Ice Chips heres the link. I beleive the point was so they can send him to the minors and only be on the hook for half of his salary, but I could be wrong. That's really odd. Regardless if he was in the minors or the NHL, the Hawks would still have to pay him. The half his salary you are thinking about is if any team would have claimed him, they would have had to pay only 50% of his salary, while the Hawks picked up the other 50%. This move doesn't make any sense to me. If they wanted to demote him, then they why would that have brought him back to the NHL?

Im not sure what you mean by "Brought him back to the NHL",but while hes in the minors I dont think any of his salary is counted against the cap. The move is purely financial as I see it. rage 24 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 I knew there would be people wanting him here once this story broke, but to play on the forth line?? Oh, Lord..... Mats and Foppa is my hope. Forget BOTH Sergei's!!

The move is purely financial as I see it. It's true that his salary wouldn't count against the cap if he were to be assigned to the Hawks minor league affiliate. However, he never was. He cleared waivers, was put on re-entry waiver, cleared re-entry waivers, and now is again part of the Hawks NHL roster. I would buy the financial move if he was assigned to the minors. But he wasn't, so this couldn't be a move to save any cap space. The only reason I see the Hawks placing him on re-entry waivers would be because a team had some interest in him, but no one claimed him. Doesn't make sense. imisssergei 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2008 (edited) But they can now send him to the minors anytime. My guess is that is what they intended to do until Toews got hurt. He does if he plays more than 10+ games or is on the NHL roster for 30+ days. If they want to keep him to take Toews spot, he very easily could play 10 games as the Hawks has 13 left this month. Also, per TSN. "To fill the roster spot, the club has called up forward Kris Versteeg from Rockford of the American Hockey League. " This was speaking about the roster spot vacated by Toews. imisssergei 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2008 Just read on TSN he was sent to the AHL. I just read the article, and it didn't say anything about him clearing re-entry waivers. Only that he cleared waivers and was assigned to the minors. I wonder if this article was written before he was placed on re-entry waivers.

Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted January 4, 2008 I gotta say, I wasn't really surprised to see no one claim Samsonov off of waivers. But I really expected someone to snag him with the re-entry waivers. Looks like he's gonna have to lower his future asking price quite a bit.

b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted January 5, 2008 There's a lot of teams that are sorry because they put too much stock into those exact attributes you mention. If a guy has no heart, those other things don't matter. I always liked Samsonov,if any team can revive his career it would be Detroit. Reviving careers works with your Chris Chelios and Dan Cleary guys with work ethic, and Detroit has a great ability to find guys who punch the clock and sweat, give them a chance and make them better than ever. This same equation doesn't work with guys like Samsonov, Yashin, etc. because of they extreme hype and sad work ethic. What you do with these guys is take passengers on a ship already set and sailing fine, throw in their baggage, pay check, and inability to pull the load, and next thing you know, s*** ain't steering right. BlackhawksFan 4 Report post Posted January 8, 2008 As poorly as Samsonov has performed this season, despite his outrageous price tag, I would pick him up. Don't take him. So very, very frusturating. He's done with the NHL, let alone the Hawks. I feel sorry for the guy, but what can you do?

He isn't done, someone will take a chance on him next season. I think he just needs a coach like Keenan.
