GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 8, 2008 Well, if he can't score playing for the Canes, he won't be able to score anywhere. They've got the best group of forwards in the league, so that might just revive him from his coma.

Hands down they are behind Ottawa, Detroit, and the Rangers.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 8, 2008 just out of curiosity, what makes you say they have the *best* group of forwards in the league? Brindamour, Staal, Cullen, Williams, Cole, Stillman, Whitney. Those guys are all putting up great numbers, just look up their stats if you don't believe me. Yeah none of them are as good as Pavel or Hank, but overall their forward lineup is much stronger than ours. None of our 2nd or 3rd liners are averaging as much points per game as those guys. I would agree with you on this, but adding Samsonov just put them over the top of those 3 teams for sure!!

The Rangers forwards are horrible this year, while neither the Wings nor Senators are getting the type of production from their top 6 that Carolina is getting. And if they are doing so well, what makes you think an offensively anemic Samsonov will crack that top 6?

Look at one of my posts from above, and also check their team's stats to see the numbers that top 6 is putting up. As for Samsonov, he won't crack the top 6, I was just saying that his stats might be boosted if he gets some PP time, and then he might earn more playing time. That part of my post was pure speculation.

Admittedly, much of the laughing at them comes from their D but still, come on. They are ridiculously hot and cold. I prefer forwards that can tie the game or break a deadlock in the last 5 minutes than those that can score the 4th, 7th and 9th goal against the Leafs in a 7 goal rout. The Hurricanes are nothing. Stats aren't the be all end all. Just because the Canes have more guys with 30+ points than anyone else doesn't necessarily translate into the best top 6. I'd take the NYR's top 6 over the Canes any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

The numbers Cullen, Whitney, Cole and Stillman put don't reflect their true value as a player. Needless to say if their numbers continue into next season, Rutherford will have some cap issues because Kevin Lowe will offer them all $7m per.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Agreed. Of the seven forwards mentioned by GMRwings I would only take Brind'Amour, Staal and maybe Williams. The numbers Cullen, Whitney, Cole and Stillman put don't reflect their true value as a player. Needless to say if their numbers continue into next season, Rutherford will have some cap issues because Kevin Lowe will offer them all $7m per. Stillman has been putting up those numbers for years. Last season, when Stillman missed half the year injured, was the first season since 2001-02 he didn't post 67 points or more in a season; it was also the first since 99-00 he didn't clear 20 goals. Whitney is the same thing; he has been putting up big numbers since the mid 90s. His stop in Detroit and his lack of numbers was a result of the fact he was being played on the third and fourth line with very little PP time; he scored at a similar rate per minute in each given situation as he had the previous season. Cullen is new to the offense thing; he has been your average second or third line center with decent play at either end but nothing spectacular, and this season he's posting nearly a point per game. I'm not sold on Cullen just yet. Cole is actually scoring at a pace below his past two seasons; this is due entirely to the fact he's not putting the puck in the net like he normally does, as his assists per game rate is actually slightly higher. Oh, and BTW...Samsonov played on a line with Stillman and Brind'Amour last night.

If it wasn't for Lundqvist, they'd have the worst record in the league. Carolina plays 5 forwards on their 1st PP unit, so Samsonov will likely get time with the 2nd unit. You're looking more at big names on paper rather than production when you mention the NYR. The reason Carolina struggles is because their defense and their goaltending sucks, so I'm still going to stick to my comment about them having the best top 6 in the league. And the reason I would leave Cullen, Whitney and Stillman is I don't believe they would really help the Wings. Whitney has already proven that. Stillman annoys me because he will score 4 goals and get 2 assist one night and then not get a point for a week while his team gets pounded. Who wants a player that can only play well when the rest of the team does?

The NYR top six haven't done s*** eh? You talk about stats, you might want to go look at some. Whitney has a team best 43 points for Carolina. Gomez has a team high 40 points for the NYR. Also, as a team they're near the bottom of the league in scoring for crying out loud. Who would have expected that before the season? As a whole, the NYR top 6 has done jack s*** this year. I don't know how anyone can argue that? Lundqvist is their whole team right now.

The reason the Canes top have more points is because they play an offense first style. The NYR play more of a defensive style. If you don't believe me, look up and interview with Jagr about the coaching style and why he is so frustrated in NY. Stats don't tell the entire story.
