lfd250 1 Report post Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) I'm not sure if this belongs in rumors due to it not being a player, but it's about the wings so I thought I'd post it. New 'Joe' near Lodge? Many people assume the new Joe Louis Arena will be built behind Foxtown so the Ilitch-owned businesses can benefit from game-night foot traffic. But don't be so sure of that. I have talked to a number of people downtown who believe a closed housing project just off Grand River and the Lodge Freeway will be the site of the new arena. Why? Traffic from a Lodge location would spill over to the Motor City Casino, which Marian Ilitch co-owns. If the arena were built in the Foxtown area, most would head to the nearby MGM Grand Casino http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...70355&imw=Y Can someone edit my title to Blip thanks Edited January 7, 2008 by lfd250
wingsfan75 2 Report post Posted January 7, 2008 That makes some sense. Right now I always park at the Greektown Casino and take the People Mover around. I occasionally gamble at Greektown. I would more than likely move my activities toward the Motor City Casino if it was close to the new arena. I'm sure a lot of folks would do the same since the People Mover doesn't cover that area. lfd250 1 Report post Posted January 7, 2008 Thanks to whom ever fixed my title. As far as the people mover. I belong to a detroit city board and there's talk of some kind of transit that would include the other casinos as well as the Arts and Science area of detroit. It could be another People Mover and or street cars. There's a big push to have something come down woodward from Royal Oak as well as something from the West from Ann Arbor
Packer487 3 Report post Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) They just have to build a new arena. I appreciate that the sight-lines at the Joe are great and that there have been a ton of memories made over the years, but that place is an absolute dive. It's ugly, the concourse is cramped, the restrooms are poorly designed, the press box was a complete afterthought, the luxury suites might as well be in Cobo they're so far away.... Take the basic plan of the XCel Center (which is an absolutely GORGEOUS facility), change a few things to make it our own, and let's rock and roll. The best team in the NHL for almost a decade and a half shouldn't be playing in an arena like that.... It's an interesting idea that they'd want the new arena closer to Motor City...hadn't thought of that. But if this new arena gets the kabosh because of some bureaucratic crap, I'm going to be upset (and I'm sure it could happen). There's a big push to have something come down woodward from Royal Oak as well as something from the West from Ann Arbor I've heard about the transit system between Royal Oak and Detroit for many years now and I've always thought it would be a great thing to bring people into the city. It used to be there and many people used it back in the day to get to work downtown. Once the invention of the car took hold that all ended. With the prices of oil going up everyday I could see this as a great alternative once again. I'd love to not have to drive the extra half hour to get downtown if I could use a light rail system that was relatively inexpensive to go the rest of the way. I hope this happens sometime during my lifetime. I'll bet it's a lot of fun being on that board. Saginaw's board of government has been one drama after another for the past 5 years. It's finally seeing the light of day as a useful entity once again.

They have a sports area too www.detroityes.com
