Backstrom (Of Washington)

I just wanted to acknowledge is 2 consecutive 4 assist games. AMAZING.

I expected this kid to be a front runner for Calder this year, and seemed disappointing throughout the first little while, but now he's picking it up. Continuing his dominant pace, I truly can see him beating out Kane for Calder this year.

So do we have a Forsberg in the making or what?

yeah, it'll be interesting to see. they're both on mediocre teams, so you can't blame one's performance on the skill / lack of skill of their team. as of now, kane has more points, and, maybe more importantly, more goals, although i'm not sure how much that factors in.

also interesting, six of backstrom's eight assists in the last two games have been secondary assists. it's hard to say (since i haven't seen either of the games) how much of that was great play and how much was two other people made a great play and he got credit for it. kane is -5 while backstrom is even.

what other players are in the running at this point?

what other players are in the running at this point?

Jonathan Toews - Chicago (speaks for himself)

Alexander Edler - Vancouver (6-3 220 solid all-round player)

Peter Mueller - Phoenix (turning it on as well, 6 points in last 3 games, 28pts in 46 games overall)

Tobias Enstrom - Atlanta (29 points in 50 games for a rookie d-man is impressive)

If Toews didn't get injured, I'd put him in the running for Calder, but now the Calder winner will be a battle of Backstrom and Kane, with probably Enstrom as the odd man out.

i think kane needs to put on a lil more weight, i really like kane but i havent seen backstrom play that much...so im not sure who should win it

I used to agree with your idea there, but now I think, meh. I mean it's not like he gets rocked all the time, he has the speed and stickhandling to compensate for any lack of size, and him putting on more weight would just slow him down and his whole style would alter.

Did anyone catch his pass to Ovechkin last night? Absolutely uneblievable pass, check it out if you haven't seen it. I really like this kid, he'll be a star for a long, long time.

Did you hear the announcers on Versus after that, they were trying to make a point about how hard AO works after practice and they said he must have practice for at least 15 minutes on that shot.

Kind of made me chuckle, yeah I get it he stays after practice, and I guess 15 minutes is better than nothing, but still if I only practiced something 15 minutes a day, I wouldn't do it that well, especially if you are talking about one timing a saucer pass as it is coming down from a bounce!

Key words...AFTER PRACTICE.

Meaning he's already been working on his hockey skills for an hour or two. And if you practuced it fifteen minutes every day for fifteen years, you might get that good.

Oh that was my point(not well delivered) eva, is that even if I practiced that for years and years there is no way in hell I have the hand eye coordination to blast that shot like that. Hell his second goal (I think it was the second one) the puck hit on the top of the blade where his blade meets his stick, and he still buried it.

Backstrom and AO have a chance to develop together like Z and Pav did, that would help that team a ton!!

This kid is an amazing player. I said when the Caps drafted him that we was going to be a good player. Just took a bit to get going is all

He's also playing together with AO more now that Nylander is injured tho that actually started before the injury. Now they don't really have a choice I suppose.

Enstrom may actually be the front runner for the Calder at this point, believe it or not. That are a lot of people that think he might nail it.

Jackman over Zetterberg part dux?

The biggest deal with Enstrom is the fact that he came out of nowhere and is now among the top point-scoring defensemen in the league. Defensively he prolly isn't too great but then Atlanta isn't exactly great defensively overall anyway.

Backstrom has definately gone under the radar for too long this season. He is a nice compliment to AO and has been a big part of the revival of the Capitals, who are right back in the playoff hunt.

Nylander wasn't really delivering much for Washington anyway. Most Caps fans consider him a big disappointment. Not quite a Jagr-level disappointment, but many feel he's underperforming.

Backstrom, on the other hand, has been strong in the last couple of months. He, Ovechkin, and Semin were great to watch when I was in Washington over the holidays.
