Apparently this ridiculous rumor's been making the rounds...

Then we can trade Khabibulin to Tampa for one of their stars, since they so desperately miss him. Other than that, I can't see why anyone would even suggest this ridiculous trade. Isn't Lalime Chicago's backup? Without Khabibulin, they won't go anywhere any time soon.

What a great idea. Then we could trade Z for Luongo, and Pav for Belfour, Lids for Brodeur, Cleary for DiPietro, Homer for Kolzig, Flipper for Thibault, Huds to bring back Joseph, Lilja and Sammy for Vokoun, Lebda for Kiprusoff, Drake for Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Kronwall for Turco, we'll just pad our lineup with goalies. Let's see anybody score on us then.

Oh, wait, we only need 2 goalies and a backup. So why would anybody think that we would get rid of our current goalie lineup?

I think this rumor is as ridiculous as the scenario I wrote above. Our goalie lineup rocks and Cheli is going nowhere. Chicago let him go, and now they have to live with that choice.

Cheli for Khabibulin hysterical.gif as if.

Edit: I liked the ROTFL emoticon so I added it.

The only reason for Detroit to make this deal is if we are turning around and shipping Khabibulin off for a top-four defenseman who can play both ways and preferably play physical. The list of teams that need goaltending and have such a defenseman goes:

Edmonton (Pitkanen)

Los Angeles (Johnson)

Pittsburgh (Whitney)

Tampa Bay (Boyle)

Boyle would be the only one I would expect to be able to get straight up for Khabibulin, because he's the oldest and most expensive. But Tampa's salary situation makes such a deal unlikely, as most of their roster is UFA at the end of the season and a Khabi/Boyle swap would reduce their available space by 3m.

So, even if Detroit COULD get Khabibulin for Chelios....WHY???

You make a valid point, but then the real question is: Is there anybody in that list that we would trade Cheli for? Maybe I'm too picky, and maybe I'm just sentimental, but I didn't see anybody.

Besides we would be on the losing side of that deal in more ways than just losing Cheli for a moderately comparable D-man. Think of all the leg work, paperwork, and meetings that would be required to be nothing more than the middle man in helping two teams get what they really want/need, in order for us to give up somebody we're not looking to let go of and get nothing really in return for the trouble.

However, getting off the sentimental bit, Cheli is getting close to retirement so what could make it worth while would be to:

Trade Cheli for Bulin

Then trade Bulin and Sammy to Edmonton for Blake

That would have potential.

Personally, I would rather keep Cheli, but Kenny is not going to make any decisions based on sentimentality (unless you're Stevie or others on a very select list).

We also, have to consider that Cheli may want to retire in Chicago, there is that remote possibility. If that is the case than by all means get Blake behind the Wheel. :nhl_crach:

Honestly, I've never heard a dumber rumor in my entire life. Congratulations to whomever came up with that.......you are a moron.

Trading a 46 year-old who won't be a part of a team rebuilding for a subpar goalie that would sit 3rd on the depth chart. Who comes up with this s***?
