Hank 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 http://www.spectorshockey.net/index.php?op...rs&Itemid=9 THE GLOBE & MAIL: Eric Duhatshek reports on the possibility of the season-ending injury to Shawn Horcoff could spark a fire sale of players by the Edmonton Oilers. Duhatschek lists Jarrett Stoll, Dwayne Roloson, Steve Staios and Joni Pitkanen as possible trade candidates.SPECTOR'S NOTE: Staios is probably the most likely to be moved, Stoll possibly although his salary and concern over his declining performance since last season's concussion could hamper his value. I doubt there'll be much of a market for an expensive, fading Roloson and I believe Lowe will try to re-sign Pitkanen. What do you guys think about a possible deal for Staios? He's a gritty dman with decent offensive skills, and a right-handed shot. I think he'd be a perfect depth move and the price would be a lot cheaper if Blake weren't available. Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 He would be great addition for sure, but if Oilers will be willing to trade him, he won't be cheap though.

Hank 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 no way in hell the oilers are getting rid of pitkanen. I would never say 'never'. He's a UFA after this year and could fetch a pretty nice return. Plus, I don't know if Pitkanen wants to return to Oiltown. The Oilers need all the picks/prospects they can get.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I wouldn't mind a guy like Staios. He's gritty and can drop the gloves when need be. Oh yeah, and he's "CANADIAN".
rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I actually think that Staios would be a perfect fit. He blocks shots, clears the crease, is gritty and a great leader. Would the Oilers take Meech and a 2nd round pick for him? Lidstrom - Rafalski Kronwall - Lilja Chelios - Staios Lebda Nice!
Opie 308 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I am really starting to like Lebda, watching him play live in Boston I kept an eye on him, well that is except when the ice girls were out and about. He skates unbelievably well for a d-man, handles the puck well, makes very smart passes, and appears ( I was not ever even close to being a high school D-man let alone nhl) to never really be out of position. Sure he makes mistakes, they all do. He may not bring the hitting that Lilja does but I think he fits the overall team mold better than Lilja or even Kronwall. Not saying he is as talented as Kronwall, but just that he fits better. I think until Ericsson, Kindl, or others prove to be better he should be the # 5 or # 6 D man. As much as I like the idea of Staois or Blake (which is not a lot btw) I would much rather have Lebda out there with Cheli. Again not because Lebda is the better player, but the intangibles he has are much better suited for the puck possession/moving defensive system the wings have. But he's a less skilled version of what this Wing's team has an abundance of: mobile, puck moving defencemen. Staios would bring something else entirely. Physical play. A guy like Staios would give the Wings another dimension. One they need on the back end, IMHO>

Are you sure you were watching Lebda and not Lidstrom with that report? About the only thing that I would agree with your assessment is he skates really well. I also completely disagree that he fits the team mold better than Kronwall, and it's not even close. Kronwall is a better passer, hitter, and wins more battles for the puck. Lebda's a career #6/7 (read depth defenseman) at best.
up2here 41 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 Finally a name being thrown around these boards that makes sense, Staios would we a nice fit. Take Hal Gill's name, throw it away and NEVER mention it again.

Turkey 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I wouldn't mind Staios at all. I've always liked his game and he seems to show up for every shift (that I've seen anyway).

topshelf40 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I dunno, I've grown fond of Lebda too. He has some good wheels and puck-handling skills, plus he's always good for a goal now and then and that never hurt anyone. I'm not very familiar with Staios's play, but from what I hear and have read on this he would bring the style of physical play the Wings need to compete to get deep into the playoffs. That, and if he's reasonably priced.
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 What about Janne Niinimaa??? we should get him too! Niinimaa is doing surprisingly well in Switzerland, just behind Daigle in points. http://www.nationalleague.ch/NL/spiele/de/statistik_nla.php
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 From what Ive heard from Oilers fans, Staois hasnt been anything special this season. But with that said, hed definitely be a nice pickup, although Id take Foote or Blake before Staios.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 Oh hell yeah! He's taken over as their leader when Smith bailed for Philly...Would be a nice addition to our blueline, but whom would he replace - Lilja, or Lebda? Lebda of course. Lilja has become a Canadian with his recent fighting prowess, so we can't get rid of him.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 (edited) He's been terrific on my NHL06 Redwings dynasty forming a solid 3rd pairing with Kronwall. Takes a lot of elbowing penalties though In all seriousness, he would be a terrific pick-up for us. Shouldn't cost as much as Blake/Foote, gives us depth and grit. Oh, and I would have Lebda as the 7th D-man. Yeah he has great speed, but I prefer Lilja's size and shot blocking in the playoffs. And lets face it, Kronner is going to go down again at some point, so Lebda gets in anyway. Oh, and forgot to say, if we could pick up Torres or Stoll at the same time, that would nice also Edited February 6, 2008 by Nev
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 STAIOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahaha little inside humor for you all... I'd surely take him, I keep hearing we were looking at Stoll though. Perhaps get them both?

I'd surely take him, I keep hearing we were looking at Stoll though. Perhaps get them both? We're looking at both? I hadnt heard we were looking at Stoll...Hes been terrible this year, but it might be a kind of Calder type scenario..maybe Stoll for Sammy + pick/prospect? Although if Stoll is all were adding up front, I would probably want to keep Sammy. Stolls offense has been really poor this year. As for Torres...HELL YES. I would love that guy. Too bad hes sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury..Still, Id love to see us look into getting him in the off-season if at all possible.

I'd surely take him, I keep hearing we were looking at Stoll though. Perhaps get them both? I'd take Stoll. Good 2-way center, favorite player was Yzerman. Plays physical and gets points, would like nice with Filpula and Cleary.
