2 reasons why Fedorov and McCarty will become Wings

Recommended Posts

Read the first post it explains everything. The Wings aren't lowering regular season ticket prices one penny, they just aren't raising them either. What's happening is the playoff ticket prices are going to be lower than last season, with a few sweet deals for season ticket holders.

Back on topic....

Sergei:

I love Sergei, more than most people on the boards. I wouldn't mind seeing him back here, but unless Rex and Sammy are going back to the Jackets (I'm not suggesting this as a trade possibility) than he just doesn't fit into the roster. He is a second line forward, and with those two guys still on the roster, there really isn't room. Yes, he is a very talented player, but you gotta believe that Babs and Kenny are going to go with what they have before they deal for an overpaid, aging vet.

Mac:

Maybe next season. This season is a loooooooooooooong shot.

Finally, Dandy:

I actually think this would be a solid pickup for the Wings. He is a great guy to have on your playoff roster. With his versatility, speed, and hard nosed style, he couldn't do anything but help.

One more tidbit, for the playoffs, the NHL expands the roster size, I believe by 2 skaters. So in theory, the Wings wouldn't really be wasting roster space on a PR move in reacquiring these two guys.

People need to figure out that teams aren't going to want Sammy in trades for Fedorov or whomever. It's going to be prospect , draft pick and or young player like Kopecky. Sammy is dead weight at this time, if they did receive something it would be a low draft pick or a bad player. For some reason Sammy does not want to drive the net, does not want to shoot, all he wants to do is try to pass the puck like some playmaker.

I think some of you would rather see these old players return and have this team lose, rather than win without those players. Whatever happened for cheering for what's on the front of the jersey, and not the back?

And you call what we are doing winning???? we have seen what the team can do without them in the line for a few years now... How is that any different than the "losing" you are expecting with them?

That's why I took the time to write that I wasn't suggesting a Sammy and Rex for Fedorov deal. All I was saying that in order for Fedorov to fit, those two guys would have to be moved.

I wasn't pointing at your post, sorry if you took it as that. Just in general on here with some of the trades that people dream up was my reasoning for it.

Because we need to chase after players that can help us "Now", and not chase after ghosts of the past that can't help us anymore. Neither Feds nor McCarty are legit 2nd line scoring threats, especially with Feds being hurt all the time.

The Wings need to sell tickets. If they can't sell out for playoff games, they are in trouble. Fedorov makes more sense because of his ability to still play and help the team. Mac is still a fan favorite and they want to get him in the fold. This may all become about ticket sales...cheeks in the seats.

I don't know if the Wings are thinking this way, but this was clever of you. Feds and Mac back in Red would be HUGE for getting a lot of on the fence Wings fans excited. However, some day all the old guys will be too old and we have to put out a team that excites people enough to want to see games. Going to the Conference Finals last year would have sure seemed enough to me, but what do I know. I watched every last game and every minute of this darn slump and that was certainly no fun. Any way, I do like your idea, but I fear Holland is thinking more about winning than tickets, but... both Mac and Feds could help us win. They are true playoff Gods of legend, play great D and more. One can dream...

I'm more than a little concerned that the team appears to be going all for a cup run at the deadline by bringing in Fedorov coming off of a concussion, Blake with a bad foot, and McCarty's 3 month comeback and bad back.

i wouldnt mind having both of them back...in fact i would love it, bringing in two fan favs that are very experienced vets who have some of the best playoff performances in the league

I'm surprised at some comments here. No room for Federov? In case you haven't noticed, we have a top line, and then three lines of equal skill level (3rd or 4th liners), all playing above their level (for now at least).

I think we'd rather bump Sammy down to a third line so Federov or another proven second line scorer can take his place. I mean, really. We all know that as much as we love these guys, just because Franzen and FIlpulla and Hudler have played on top lines doesn't mean they are top line players. THey will be some day, and they're getting there, but if we can get someone who IS a second line scorer, it would really help things along.

Feds IS NOT a proven scorer. He WAS one.

Haven't we been doing that each of the last 4 seasons?? how many cups did that bring home?

Fedorov is a top six scorer. But then again, I may not be using the same meaning other posters use when I say top six forward; in that I mean a guy who is one of the top 180 offensively skilled forwards in the NHL. You know...since there are 30 teams, there would be 180 top-six forwards, and the primary statistic in determining who is a top six forward is points per game, as the primary role of the top two lines is offense.

Guess what? The following current or former Wings are top-six forwards based on PPG, with players who have played less than 20 games excluded from rankings. I have included the player's PPG rank.

FIRST LINERS:

4. Henrik Zetterberg, DET

13. Pavel Datsyuk, DET

26. Jason Williams, CHI

32. Ray Whitney, CAR

82. Robert Lang, CHI

87. Tomas Holmstrom, DET

SECOND LINERS:

94. Daniel Cleary, DET

106. Mike Knuble, PHI

115. Brendan Shanahan, NYR

126. Sergei Fedorov, CBJ

134. Jiri Hudler, DET

137. Sean Avery, NYR

143. Mikael Samuelsson, DET

160. Slava Kozlov, ATL

161. Mike Sillinger, NYI

BOTTOM-SIX/SPARE FORWARDS

186.Valtteri Filppula, DET

202. Tomas Fleischmann, WSH

254. Johan Franzen, DET

255. Kyle Calder, LA

272. Kris Draper, DET

276. Boyd Devereaux, TOR

313. Mathieu Dandenault, MTL

348. Matt Ellis, DET

352. Tomas Kopecky, DET

362. Kirk Maltby, DET

368. Martin Lapointe, CHI

398. Dallas Drake, DET

418. Aaron Downey, DET

Take a good long look at that list. Based on offense, the Wings have three first liners, three second liners, and eight forwards who, based on their offense, do not belong on a top-two line. Interestingly, and expectedly, Hudler is in the 'top-six' group while Filppula is not. That doesn't mean Hudler is a better player than Flip, just that he is a better offensive forward. But taking that into consideration, Fedorov ranks higher than Huds, Flip, or Sammy. He's also better defensively than any of them, and is a proven playoff performer. Anyone who would claim 'Fedorov can't help the Wings; we need a top six forward' clearly doesn't understand the term 'top-six forward' as Fedorov is SOLIDLY entrenched in that status.

Really don't think anyone's lobbying for MAC to play on the 2nd line, especially not for scoring. If anything, he'll be a 4th liner.

I guess he's an improvement over our current 4th liners, but to win the Cup this team's first priority should be suring up the 2nd line, or getting a defenseman over 6'0.
