Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 1. Fight 2. Hit Those are the two expectations directly referred to by the OP. Neither of which he has done with any real effect on the game in a long time. (The fight against Parros actually seemed to drop the energy at first and fire up the ducks). Actually, it did give the building a buzz and the Wings got a powerplay soon after the fight....and failed to score. Downey did his job and rest of the guys didnt capitalize. -No one in the line up would fight him, well that is funny because for some one that runs their mouth like Ott was doing he looked awfully interested in being a tough guy, yapping at Lids, Maltby and others through out the game. If he doesn't want to drop the gloves than Downey should have made him remember why and shut his pie hole. Funny, I didnt know Downey was also a bench coach and had the ability to dictate his own shifts to go after Ott. If you're looking for someone to blame in regards to Ott, that lies with the likes of Dallas Drake and Kopecky (more-so Drake obviously) He's our middleweight fighter, and Ott's, you guessed it... a middleweight. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 Nobody on the team has seemed to do their job to the best of their abilities lately, including Downey, and including favorite whipping boys of the week on this forum. The reasons why Downey doesn't get ripped on as much is because... (1) He is the "enforcer-type" that many people here have always wanted. Whether you think he is effective doing that, you be the judge, but he does fit that mold to whatever extent you want to subject him to. (2) He doesn't play all that much a game to really deserve over-the-top criticism I think. The reason(s) why Samuelsson and Hudler are whipping boys (as of late at least) is because they should be in a more prominent role than Downey and expected to do a little more and produce, and they haven't lately. It may not be fair, but that's the lay of the land to me whether some like it or not. I will rarely, if ever, participate in over-the-top bashing being a drama queen like some in here saying so and so is useless and so forth. If that's the case, I guess Samuelsson's 9 goals and Hudler's 11 goals this year just don't count for whatever reason. If that's the case, they wouldn't be in the NHL. For some people, hey that's the way they vent frustrations or anger. That's just not my cup of whiskey. Nor will I ever go overboard (in a serious manner)acting like I want to hump somebody's leg, which is what many people have done this season in Downey's case this season (along with other players as well). We can debate how much more important some players are vs. others in terms of how much/little ice time they get until we are blue in the face and have drunk all the beer in the country of Ireland, but as of right now very few of the players on the Wings are doing their jobs as good as they can from the looks of this 6-game losing streak. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 I dont believe Downey has escaped criticism this year, he's gotten his share when its been warranted...which in the last few games, it isnt. Myself and other members of the "fight club" here got on him for not going after Walker when he had a perfect oppurtunity in the game he beat up Franzen. In that instance he did not do his job and he was criticized accordingly. Also, not looking good in a few fights against suspect competition have come into question in the past. Downey does not get a free pass around here, this whole idea is stupid. More often than that, he has done his job.

And I've definitely seen people question Downey's prescence before to a small degree. December/mid-season was a time where he wasn't making as much of a dent as he did earlier in the season I think. Still though, he's not going to be under a big microscope as much as I outlined above with less playing time and such. People definitely aren't "picking" on him by any stretch of the imagination though. Especially compared to other guys.
Opie 308 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 Here is his chance he better step up next shift and stop Col from railing everything in Red! Opie 308 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 Haha, such great timing with this thread too...gotta love it. Most of the team looks sharper tonight than last night, Flip, Huds, Lilja, Lebda, Cheli has looked great on the blueline a couple of times not including the goal. He held in a couple of tough bouncing pucks, Downey was on the ice for a half second before he was on Lappy and I don't care about the instigator, but best of all Ozzie has looked great!!!!!!! rage 24 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 When the Wings were getting PWND 3-0 in the first period, where was he? He was on the ice, but wasn't doing any of the things that he should have been to fire up his team. Same with today against the Stars- he looks like Samuelsson, but less effective out there- if that's even possible. At least Sammy has a shot. Send Downey somewhere, as long as it's not on to the ice. Now what?!?!

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 It should be noted, just for those out there who think McCarty should replace Downey as enforcer....that last year Mac was unable to beat this same Laperriere that Downey just pounded.

KronwallCRUNCH 5 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 Now what?!?! What do you mean "now what?" THATS WHAT HE'S SUPPOSED TO DO! It's about damn time. He's not here to skate around in circles and try to score goals, he's here to beat some ass.
KronwallCRUNCH 5 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 To the person who started this thread (your name is not important enough for me to click back and look up): f*** you. Ms. Downey, is that you? Let me guess, the initial post of this title infuriated you so much, that you sat behind your computer screen just waiting for Downey to do his job so that you could post an angry, inappropriate comment because you're too big of a ***** to say something like that to anyone in real life? I think people were more hinting for McCarty to replace one of the dead weight players on the roster, such as Kopecky, for instance.

I'd be in that boat. I want to see a Drake craving blood, a fiesty Downey and a rejuvented Mac as a line for one of the final games against Chicago. Now that'd be entertaining! Now that'd be entertaining! Chicago? Why Chicago? All they have is Adam Burish, who's not even a good fighter. I'd rather see it against St. Louis. It'd be great if someone on the Wings would actually fight D.J King, and win! That would really make my day for sure.
