Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

I have found my answer! Pistons are beating the snot out of Shaq and the Suns!!

Not to derail the thread or anything but the best part is that Boston takes all the limelight in the East. The Pistons flying under the radar can be a dangerous, dangerous thing for other teams.

Dude, Schneids would NEVER get hurt during the playoffs.

Trust me.

Yeah because one time means recurring.

And because if Anaheim loses Schneider...they'll be s*** out of luck only having Nidermayer, Pronger, and Beauchmin to pick up his slack on the point.

At any rate, its looking good on the front in terms of Anaheim making a big move. Spector brought up a comment Burke made last year about not being a big believer of adding big names a the deadline, so hopefully he wont be in the hunt for the Sundins and Hossas of the league..

I think he actually ment to say maybe we could sign him for below the over-inflated-free-agent market level. I honestly believe that Detroit could sign Hossa for 5-6 years at 6.5-7 million per. He's making 7 million now and could go for 8 million on the FA market. BUT he knows that any team that buys his services for 8 million isn't going to be perpetually competitive and stacked with high quality players.

Hossa's stated multiple times that his issue is with competitiveness and that he wants to be competiting for the cup year in and year out. Detroit has a unique ability to offer that over a 5-6 year period. Very, very, very few teams can claim to have been at the top of the league for this long, nor can they claim to have half the managerial quality and comittment to sucess.

If Detroit gives him a long term contract at his current salary, or makes a convincing case to get him to take a small pay cut (we're talking small here- as in no more than a million dollars) I think they have a really good chance to win his services.

My plan, were I in Holland's shoes would be to give Hossa a HUGE contract for next year. Like 9 million (assuming it can be squeezed in under the increased cap), even though it'd eat up all the remaining wiggle room for next year. Then the contract would decline to be 6 million or less in the 09-10 season (when Zetterberg's new contract would start). Hossa should know how the math works in the financial world- big money now > big money later (assuming he actually invests something :P ).

Sounds good to me

IF we were to land Hossa, would he play with Dats or Z?? Just curious.

I'd assume Datsyuk, as he's primarily a playmaker. Zetterberg is the more prolific goal-scorer of the two.

Hossa and Hank are your two main goal scorers in the top 6. Datsyuk is a passer first. Hank is about half and half, but when he passes the puck off, he usually hovers around the net looking for the rebounds. Hes got great hands around the net. Because of that I think Hossa and Hank should be split up, given that both are capable of 40 goals on a season. Ied be interesting to see our main pairings be Hank and Homer, and then Datsyuk and Hossa. Cleary/Franzen/Hudler could rotate on the left side.

Hudler - Datsyuk - Hossa

Cleary - Datsyuk - Hossa

Franzen - Datsyuk - Hossa

Franzen - Hank - Homer

Hudler - Hank - Homer

Cleary - Hank - Homer

I can't see Hossa taking a paycut. I'm sure he wants to win, but he's 29, he's got several more years to make that mooney until its Stanley Cup or bust.

If Hossa comes to Detroit, I think we can almost guarantee that he will not be a rental player

Holland is already uncomfortable giving up prospects, and no way in hell would he give up what Waddell is asking for a player that would only be here for the spring. If Hossa wants to play with a contender team every year, I think he knows the Wings would be the best choice, of course it aint up to him to decide where he goes, so we can only hope on Kenny......Cmon Kenny!!!

This may have been mentioned before (I refuse to read all 53 pages), but I think Hossa DOES have a bit of a say as to where he goes. It seems that the general consensus around the league is that nobody wants to give up a lot for a potential rental player. This means that either Hossa will have to work out a sign-and-trade situation with the Thrashers, or have a discussion window with a potential team in order to get a deal worked out. If he doesn't want to go to a certain team, he COULD just turn down every extension offer they throw at him. So oddly enough, unless some idiot GM is willing to give up a young roster player, prospect and pick for a rental player, Hossa has the equivalent of a NTC.

If Hossa indeed would prefer a winning team over big money, I think this increases Detroit's chances of landing him.

Since Datsyuk is a playmaker first, it seems everyone would put him with hossa and seperate from Hank? I wonder if we would want to have Hank and Datsyuj with Homer on one line and bring someone you can actually build a 2nd line around? Maybe a playmaker that could play with Cleary and not fill in the blanks... seem Hudler hasn't been much of a playmaker yet...

Hudler hasn't ben much of anything yet, but let's put this line combo talk on hold until Tuesday if the Wings actually do get Hossa...which seems like a long shot anyway.

It's been confirmed tha Waddell himself was scouting a Hamilton Bulldogs game today. This, by the way, is Montreal's farm team. In fact Atlanta have been scouting the Habs over the last two or three weeks much more frequently than they have scouted Detroit.

If Hossa gets dealt, IMO, it will be to the Canadiens.

Unless someone else is sneaking under the rumor radar, Marian Hossa is definitely the best talent up for grabs this Tuesday.

Boston Globe suggests Hossa is looking for an 8-year $8M per UFA contract this summer

Anyone still thinking he's really within Ken Holland's sights??

That suggests it's what he could land. The debate that I (and others) have brought up is whether or not Hossa would be willing to accept less to come to an organization like the Wings. If he is, he'll be in Holland's sights.

Articles like this are just to get people all in a tizzy. Look at the semantics here:

"Boston Globe scribe Kevin Paul Dupont suggests that Hossa could aim for an eight-year, $64 million deal with plenty of money on the front end of the deal."

Fact is, NO team that is a contender has 8M dollars to throw at Hossa, unless he wants to go to an up and comer..

I just noticed that the date of this article is January 21st

Is there something going on that I don't know about? Is Hossa starting to become a real possibility, or is this just all speculation?

Pretty much all speculation/rumors/debate.

Pass on Hossa, and go after Sundin. I think Sundin is more the type of player we need. Mats has size, Hossa is the same size as Datsyuk and Zetterberg. You need size in the playoffs, so I'm hoping for Sundin, McCarty, and keeping Ericsson on the team.
