Sundin will only waive no trade if 3 things happen

We can, though.

It's just a matter of Holland's willingness and the assets the other teams are putting on the table.

I really dont want to see us give up a lot for a rental player. Obviously I would love to have Hossa with a guarantee that he would re-sign. We gave up Matthais for nothing but those kind of things happen. I just do not want to see it happen again. I heard a rumour about Atlanta wanting Filppula in a package for Hossa...TREASON.

Where are you getting this notion that he would re-sign? If he hits the market he would get a huge pay day...something that we not be able to give him. So even if we do get him whats to say that he does not walk and sign with a team that can offer him more money?

I don't see Holland dealing for someone who he'd have to sign to an expensive contract. Since the lockout, Holland has shown that he is loathe to give out large long-term deals to players and is set on limiting them to players he feels will be the core of the team (Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Rafalski, Kronwall, etc.). I don't see him giving out a long term contract to Hossa given that Cleary will get a raise this summer, and Zetterberg will get a large, long-term deal next year.

Just had to kill the buzz, didn't you? <_<

Nah, it's true. As amazing as it would be, we're not getting Hossa. I'd love to eat those words, but I just can't see him coming here.

But, we do have a good a chance at landing him as anyone else. He wants to play for a winning team and, IMO, we are "the" winning team in hockey EVERY year.

Basically, I agree. Except you have to factor in Kronwall's injuries. If someone could guarantee that Nik would stay healthy, then he gets put on the "no trade" list. But you have to assume that the fact that he hasn't played a full season yet, due to a myriad of physical setbacks, is a major issue and perhaps makes him more tradeable then his upside (potential, salary, etc.) suggests. Correct?

edit: spelling

So why do we want to acquire a defenseman who has higher trade value but worse actual performance just to replace Nik for when we trade him off? Sounds like we're making unneccessary deals that would increase our cost. For example...the Wings could probably get Sundin for Hudler, Meech, and a first. Why turn that into Hudler, Kindl, and two firsts?

EDIT: I just realized that my potential trade for Hossa and my potential trade for Sundin didn't have any overlap. Hmmm...

I would rather the Leafs not trade Sundin than get a crappy return like that.

Hudler is a skilled forward, Meech is a decent defenseman. Oh, and there's a first. If Sundin really has demanded he go to Detroit, that's about the package I would expect to see as the return. His trade value is probably higher, but we'd be looking at Fletcher retooling and he wants to get as many firsts as possible. With that deal he gets a top-six scoring forward and a first rounder, plus a depth defenseman. And the salaries are low, which really helps with the mess JFJ put them in. Ultimately, a Sundin trade might be more about Tucker/Kaberle/Kubina/McCabe than Sundin or whoever he's traded for.

What use is a depth defenceman like Meech? They want to jettison vets on the blueline to fit in guys they already have like Stralman & Kronwall.

Hudler is decent, but absolutely nothing special. Wellwood has probably soured them on players like that, given his terrible performance and work ethic this year.

Add to that the 29th or 30th pick and you've got yourself one very under-whelming trade package.

I'd sign Sundin for one more year than take that deal.

According to XM Radio, Brian Burke has tabled the following offer to Cliff Fletcher:

To Anaheim

Mats Sundin

Matt Stajan

To Toronto

Bobby Ryan

Brendan Mikkelson

2008 1st round pick (EDM)

If I'm Toronto...I ******* JUMP at that deal. Blue chip power forward prospect, top four two-way defenseman, and another top five pick in a draft with basically seven top-end players...and all I am giving up is an aging center who is about to hit UFA, a second/third line forward with decent skill but no top-end upside, and a 2nd rounder? I have to think that either Sundin won't waive his NTC for Anaheim, or this report is bogus...because Fletcher would be a moron not to JUMP on that....and Fletcher isn't a moron.

Guest Hatethedrake!

I've seen Ryan play 5 times now live and I don't think his skating is NHL level. If I were the Ducks I'd include him in any Sundin trade. I think the Leafs would be making a big mistake in acquiring Ryan. Now the lottery pick would be good for them though.

All things being equal, Ryan's stock is higher than my take on him. The Red Wings cannot match what the Ducks can offer the Leafs.

With Sundin going to Anaheim, I don't see how Detroit counters that unless they can get Hossa. But lets face it. There are desperate teams out there who will overpay big time for Hossa. Detroit is not one of them. We are all in for a big letdown when deadline day comes and neither Hossa or Sundin are Red Wings.

We'll just have to see what happens. The rumours are going to get crazy over the next 5 days. Everyone will be rumoured to be going to Detroit.

I saw Fedorov play against the Leafs the other night and he looked awful. I am a Fedorov fan but he looked like a shell of his former self against the Leafs. The Wings should be looking elsewhere.

I am not thrilled with the idea of Prospal or Satan or maybe even Comrie coming over but the prices will not be nearly as high as Sundin or Hossa or even Jokinen for that matter.

Anaheim wants to add a forward, there is a Sundin deal on the table to bring him to Anaheim. The Maple Leafs have communicated to Mats that they will definitely re-sign him this summer. As I wrote a few weeks ago, Bobby Ryan is the main piece going to Toronto in the deal. There is a rumor that Sundin has 24 hours to accept the deal. This is not true.

Detroit is going after a D-man. Teams are asking for Brett Lebda, Jiri Hudler, or Valtteri Filppula in return.
