Lidstrom expected to miss 3 weeks

Nicklas Lidstrom will miss three weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee. In addition, he has taken one test that has shown no signs of a concussion and he will be taking another to verify that.

Niklas Kronwall (shoulder) is a possibility for playing Friday night, but he still has to compete in more battle drills at practice tomorrow. Brian Rafalski (groin) is definitely out of the lineup for this weekend.

In case Kronwall isn't able to make it back, the Red Wings will recall Jonathan Ericsson from Grand Rapids for their trip to Western Canada. If Kronwall is still shelved, then Ericsson will make his NHL debut Friday.

better three weeks than 3 months...gives him a chance to rest, we should still be able to maintain first place in the league

i hope so. but if not, i wont freak out. but 1st place would be great simply to have the home ice throughout...

Thanks so much!!

This is maybe the biggest on-ice injury since the horrible puck to Yzerman. It has a huge effect on the team, and I know from having this injury that it can take a very long time to get back from if serrious, and sometimes you never get back to 100% I am glad it isn't as serrious as that and hopefully the 3 weeks will make him 100% and rested enough to make a victory lap with a cup overhead!

The knee is the hardest joint in the body to recover from injury.

This only makes us stronger in the long run :)

Get better quick Nick!

I agree. You've gotta think that they're gonna be able to form some new chemistry without him. Then, when he comes back, he'll just add a huge new dimension to what is, hopefully, a stronger team.

Take it easy, Nickolai

Mmm damn. Could have been much worse. He should be more than ready to go come playoff time. Until then, we will just have to hold on and see how it goes. Since he has never been injured before... lol

Well they will just have to deal with it. Nothing else to do. Hopefully the young guys will step up to the challenge and show what they can do. The rest of the team will also have to step its play up as well. This is a good test for the team in general. Let's see what they can do.

from MLIVE:

Update from practice Wednesday: Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom addressed the media after having an MRI on his right knee. Lidstrom said doctors estimate he'll be out three weeks with an MCL sprain. He is scheduled to undergo baseline testing later today but said he doesn't believe he has a concussion. The Wings recalled defenseman Jonathan Ericsson from Grand Rapids because Brian Rafalski (strained groin) and Niklas Kronwall (sprained clavicle) aren't ready to play Friday in Calgary. Dominik Hasek (inflamed hip flexor) still hasn't practiced, decreasing the chances of him being able to play during this three-game Western Canada trip. Coach Mike Babcock said Chris Osgood will start against the Flames.

Better now than in April...

Just cuz he's injured now doesn't mean he can't get injured again
