Ti-girl 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 helm is basically a young Draper clone But he can score on a breakaway... Though, one thing, Helm is naturally a centre, not a LW. He's just been playing wing with the Griffins for the past few games.
12Newf 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 found some stuff on Helm that is interesting. No surprise that Helm's on the fast track Posted by George James Malik January 28, 2008 08:50AM Categories: Griffins, Prospects Grand Rapids Griffins forward Darren Helm had a rough start to his professional career, suffering a dislocated shoulder that cost him the vast majority of his training camp with the Detroit Red Wings, the entire exhibition season, and the start of the AHL season. Helm has begun to shine halfway through the AHL season, and Griffins GM Bob McNamara told RedWingsCentral's Matthew Wuest that the Winnipeg Flash is starting to look like the player he's most often compared to--Kris Draper: January 28, RedWingsCentral: You wouldn't know it from looking at statistics alone, but Darren Helm is having one of the best seasons of any prospect in the Detroit Red Wings' system. The 21-year-old American Hockey League rookie forward has been one of the few bright spots for the struggling Grand Rapids Griffins, producing five goals and four assists in 40 games in a second-line, penalty-killing capacity. "Darren has been outstanding -- he uses his speed, and that's his big asset," Griffins general manager Bob McNamara. "He has high-end NHL speed and he's been excellent taking it wide, taking it to the net. Penalty-killing, he's been great." ... McNamara singled out Helm, along with AHL all-stars Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Ericsson, as Detroit's standout prospects in Grand Rapids this season. "He's gonna play in the NHL, my guess is within a year, year and a half, and maybe a call-up or two here or there," McNamara said. "If I would compare him to a Red Wing, he's in the Kris Draper mold, with a little more offensive upside." Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill agreed with McNamara's assessment: "He's not getting rewarded point-wise, but he's doing everything you want a guy to do," Nill said. "He kills penalties, he's got good speed, he's tenacious on the puck, and he wins battles. He missed half of training camp and the start of the season, but he's earned his rights and become one of our top forwards (in Grand Rapids)." Helm's still filling out at 6'2" and 182 lbs. (in his equipment), but he's an extremely fast skater with a tremendous defensive acumen. found this on mlive
CapnSmitty 39 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Well he was definitly on Fire last night, 2 goals and 2 helpers while the Griffins Trounced the Marlies 7-1 Yes Helm is a Younger Draper, but with better hands, and I even think a little more speed, the kid is just flat out FAST...He can turn on the jets and just blow right by a d-man, its good to see Helmer getting some points, because he was being robbed of them early on. Also Helm has been playing Center as of late, and winning a good share of the draws he takes, so take that as its worth....

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Tight game, but if we are against Turco then we shall win. Wings 4 (Dats, Stein, Malts, DOWNEY) Stars 3 (who cares, the refs will probably play rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to check Oz and kick the puck in)
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 This only a guess so don't get too bent out of shape if you don't agree, but based on the last few games I think the line will play out as follows: Filppula Datsyuk Hudler Franzen Zetterberg Samuelsson Maltby Kopecky Drake Helm Hartigan Downey Lidstrom Rafalski Kronwall Stuart Chelios Lebda Osgood Howard Injured Holmstrom (Abdominal Inflammation) Cleary (Jaw) Draper (Groin) Lilja (Illness) Hasek (Back)
Sgt.Niedermayer 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 I've been visiting this website for, oh probably four years or so. Guess that makes this sorta like the 'long-time listener, first-time caller' kinda thing then. Just wanted to say the changes to the site have been amazing, and this thread in particular blew me away. Aflac9262's gameday graphics and stas are AMAZING. I think I will be visiting the site more often. Here's to hoping these players healthy up in time for the playoffs--GO WINGS!

HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Ahh...well...whatever keeps him off the ice. McCarty coming back will do nothing. He won't score goals, he won't be as good as an enforcer as Downey is, his physicality won't be enough to help the team. The guy is washed up...and yeah, it's a nice heart-warming story for the media, and he might help fill more seats, but in the end, he's not going to do anything. You guys think Lilja and Samuelsson turn the puck over a lot...I honestly don't think McCarty will be much better. He's useless, and should retire. He isn't the player he used to be... Now D-Mac may come out and actually do something, and if he does, I'll shut my mouth and let everyone tell me I was wrong...but I don't expect I'll be wrong. This isn't 1998...we don't need all the old players that we got rid of. Lidstrom has been able to stay consistent and perform at a top level, Draper and Maltby have been able to stay mildy competitive, but their roles are more of a defensive role...and they do that pretty well. We didn't need Drake, we don't need D-Mac, we don't need Shanahan, we don't need Fedorov, we don't need any of those guys. They are no longer capable of contending for championships...it's 2008...not 1998. I didn't realize you could read the future! Sorry, but Mac has got himself into shape and has really tried EXTREMELY hard in the last year or so to get his life back on track, and that of course includes making it back to the NHL and playing like he knows he can. I have all the faith that he'll do just fine. Anyways, I'll be at the game tonight with my cousins. ksjdkgs I am SO excited!! Wings win and Downey gets a gordie howe hatrick. LETS GO WINGS!!!!! GO OZZIE!!!!!

Kira 451 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 I don't know why, but Pavel's Datsyuk 400th NHL point (02/18) is missing in Accomplishments You and I (and maybe a handful of others) are probably the only ones who paid attention to his stats enough to see it. I did because I always do pay attention to them. Besides, artists are never appreciated in their own time. I thought you knew that.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Listenin to Sirius and seems like everyone is stoked for this game, but favouring Dallas. I definatley see us htting 100 points tonight. I want Z to tear it up, but a bit since he has had a monster game. I listen to HNIC on Sirius as well. If you listened solely to them for hockey news, you would think the Red Wings were in last place, not first overall in the standings. Oh well, I guess it makes it even sweeter when the Red Wings prove them wrong. I'm thinking this will be a statement game for the Wings tonight. Despite the injuries, they will come out and play at a high level. Red Wings - 5 (Filppula, Lidstrom, Mule, Kronwall, and Z) Stars - 1 (It really won't matter)
