GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I got a sarcastic 'Better luck next time' at GM Place at the last Wings-Canucks game (Wings lost 4-1). Otherwise I haven't gotten much flak. Also I was in Calgary last summer. The day after the Flames were knocked out by the Wings I went down 17th Ave (aka The Red Mile) wearing my Lidstrom jersey. Soooo many dirty stares, and I savoured every one. How did you get out of that bar alive?
Cern 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 How did you get out of that bar alive? I wasn't in a bar. I was on 17th to pick up some skateboard bearings or something, I can't remember exactly. Walked by a few bars though, including that big one with the open garage doors that face out onto the street (Melrose, I think) which is pretty much the epicenter of the Red Mile. I could pratically feel the daggers being stared into me but I couldn't stop grinning like an idiot. Had my headphones on so if people were talking trash I didn't hear it. Sept 07, I flew out to Vancouver for my cousin's wedding. There and back we had a stop over in Calgary for a few hours, and I made sure both flights I had a Red Wings t-shirt on. Cern 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I live in Canada BC. non-stop "red wings suck, blah blah blah, stupid american team, canadian traitor, etc." I love it when people have said stuff like that about the last few Cup winners . I hate these deep-south 'new-market' teams, but the Ducks had the most Canadian players of any team in the league. Saying they're canada-us rivalries is absurd given that over half the league is Canadian anyway. I also like to quasi-cheat and think of Detroit as being a half-canadian team anyway. It's right across the water from Windsor, right?
Hiei 192 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Down here in Arkansas there are a few Stars fans who like to talk hockey with me. Not too much flak. My Girlfriend lives outside of St. Louis. I went north of Market St with my wings jersey on in the truck....then they realized that i'm bigger than 99% of St Louis. She doesn't know too much about Hockey, but hey, SHE HATES THE BLUES ALREADY! Aside from the Wings, i'm a Chicago sports fan since i am from Illinois. and yes, Bears fans can be vicious....After all, i'm of the generation that wasn't born yet in 1985-86, and put up with Wannstedt and then Jauron...We're the worst of them. And if i'm in the Winged Wheel at the UC, I don't get so much as 1 threat....Probably because I look Angry most of the time.....and these people know i'm right next to them when Cubs season starts. cirov19 1 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 In Windsor the majority of people are Toronto fans so you make sure to wear Wings jerseys/apparel as much as possible on game days/playoffs. They will all say 'Detroit sucks...' and it's like "Mmmmm, okay..." and you just push out your chest and pat the logo. It's more entertaining than anything though. servo 15 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Part One: Can't really say I've seen a historic moment in person, but I was in Colorado the night of the big Avs/Wings Brawl in March of 97. Too bad the game was in Detroit. I was in a sports bar going nuts with 2 of my mates. We got a lot of funny looks. Part Two: I lived the 1st 30 years of my life in Detroit, but I have seen more games in other states than at the Joe. My experiences have been relativly inert, however: Chicago: I Allways get s*** from the finest bunch of classless fans in all of the NHL. *I would say that the Ducks fans compete for this title, but they are too stupid to know the difference* Every game some overweight dolt will try to tell me how much I suck along with other cliches. IME, I have always gone home with a smile on my face (Except 2002, but the result at the end of the season........) I was living in Columbus in 2000-2004 and went to every Wings game. I got in a shouting match with a drunk about how Michigan sucks. Those expansion fans still have a hard time realizing that most hockey fans could really care about college football. Anyway he was sitting about 7 rows behind me and ended up mooning me. Personally, found this pretty funny, but not as funny as security escorting him away. I live in Dallas now and have been going to every Wings game here since 2005. There are quite a few of us down here. They have forked over their lunch money to the might winged wheel enough times that I think that they are too intimitated to talk smack. Cern: Love the avatar! shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I live in Philly, and as long as you dont act like an ass at the game no one really bugs you - contrary to popular belief about Philly fans I got into a verbal fight with a Flyers fan in the lobby of the Marriot in downtown Philly. The idiot was trying to tell me that we got lucky when we swept them for the cup. It was good fun especially when he tried to steal my luggage. He grabbed and then head for the door. Lucky for me i had several friends with me and he didn't make it far. Thats the only time i really got crap for being a wings fan. Went to Chitown for a game and wore my Stevie throwback and the fans mostly complimented my on the jersey. They were pretty cool until after the game when we came back from 2 to win the game in overtime. Then they decided they wanted to throw stuff at us. I enjoyed both of the events. We took the tunnel bus to the Joe for the March 15th game. While we were walking to the bus station on the Windsor side, we had our Wings gear on, a few people yelled, "Hey take those jersey's off". All I said back was, "Poor Leaf fans".
