Shaman 713 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 I keep hearing people when they talk about the wings this year always bring up age, now, aside from Chelios and Hasek, is our team really that old? I mean because our mean age is a few years older then SJ or Anaheim does that really invalidate all the things the wings have going for them? We have the best Defense in the league, 2 good goalies, 2 of the top ten scorers, playoff experience, good coaching, and somehow all that goes out the window cause we are old? I am sorry for the rant...but, I am just tired of hearing this from all the 'experts'.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 Actually I haven't heard the age thing much at all this year. Much less than in previous years. Our star attractions (Zetterberg and Datsyuk) are not yet 30, so it's not something people pay attention to any more. Anyway it's quite easy to counter the age argument. We don't have to say "yeah but...." any more when people bring up the age issue - just point to the rising core of younger, faster players.
Guest Mr. Byng Report post Posted April 1, 2008 (edited) I've heard and read so many times: "Chelios, time to retire!" Sometimes the argument was that he should give room for younger players, other times there was no argument at all. If he gets a roster spot which means he plays better than the younger fellas he shouldn't have a reason to retire other than personal ones. As long as winning is what counts in hockey games best players will play. It's the same thing with Hasek. Even some Red Wings fans seem to think they should retire just because they're old or because Chelios is in Meech's way and Hasek is in Howard's way. These young players just need to outplay the old ones to get their roster spots. Edited April 1, 2008 by Mr. Byng
akustyk 84 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 people talk a lot of BS. like the good old argument about Wings stats being inflated because they play in Central Division honestly, who cares? if the other teams understimate us in playoffs - the better for Wings! Someone could also say that it is completely absurd to take offense to a comment about a potential weakness on the team. If someone doesn't have only glowing comments about the Wings, are they all of sudden idiots? Why do you take a comment that the Wings are an older team, which could work against them and turn it into.......all the other things they have going for them is irrelevant because they are too old to win. Truth be told, they are an older team and that may be one of their short comings come playoff time after a long season. Though, at the same time, you could look at it as a positive in that they have a lot of playoff experience, which is extremely valuable. Look at the Pens, they had absolutely no experience last year and it showed. That little experience from last year will help them this year, but you still have to wonder if they have enough experience to be able to sustain a deep run. It works both ways. I agree but here is the catch they keep on winning, here is what I think they are having trouble finding many flaws with the Wings so what do they turn to is age. Here is what i say to that suck it up guys take your geritol, take your aleve and bring home the cup
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 People just want something to pick on about the Wings. They've been saying their old for years now. Yes they are older, I think they are still the oldest team in the league, but like you said you take off Dom and Cheli and their average age drops. Do I think it hurts them over a long season? Not really because Chelios is in better shape then some of the young guys and thanks to a great year by Ozzie, Dom, if he can stay healthy, should be fine. What I find funny is that in 98 this team wasn't old but in 99 when they lost before the WCF for the first time since 94 all of a sudden they were old. Because the difference between lets say age 34 and 35 makes a difference. Like everyones said when you win you're experienced and when you lose you're old. And that will happen again this year. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 These so-called "experts" usually calculate by average team age anyway. Chelios and Hasek really skew that average, so if you take them out of the equation, I doubt we'd be the "oldest" team in the league.
