even crazier is that if the sens pull into a points tie with the caps, the caps could take their place on tiebreakers and the sens could be out completely

What happened to them? I remember thinking it was gonna be the Wings and the Sens neck and neck for the President's Trophy and possibly the Finals as well. Unless there was some injury that I don't remember, it looks like they fell into a slump like we did in February, except they're still in it.

im pretty sure alfredsson and spezza were out at different times, with a few injuries key to their defense, but that was during our slump. i was feeling the same way to about their race for the presidents cup, and maybe even the finals, but who knows now?

Two words: Ray Emery

He completely destroyed that team by himself.

I do sort of agree there. BUT I have Gerber on my fantasy team. And he has been FAR from reliable lately...

It's not about on-ice performance. I'm speaking to Emery's off-ice antics. It completely side-tracked and divided the team.

Yahoo Rankings:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=Avat...o&type=lgns

This week's theme go to guy:

It might be a team game, even the ultimate team game, but every squad has a go-to-guy, the player who must perform up to expectations for good things to happen.

That’s especially true this time of year as playoff teams look to go deep and playoff hopefuls look to their best player to get them into the postseason. For the teams that are playing out the string, maybe it’s because that key player or person in management didn’t do enough. This week’s rankings, which appear every Tuesday, identify the most important person on each team.

2. Detroit Red Wings (52-20-7, Previous: 2) – It isn’t as much a player as it is a position for Detroit, which will turn to either Dominik Hasek, Chris Osgood or both in the hopes of Cup No. 11. You get the feeling coach Mike Babcock would lean toward Hasek all things being equal – and they very much are looking at the regular-season statistics – but The Dominator has been in and out with injury and illness.

I'm sure that they've had a big slump over the course of the year, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't nearly as bad as our's was. Its pretty just been consistent sub-par play ever since starting the season at 15-2. They cannot get consisten goaltending, their offense has been spotty, as has their defense, and as a result, they don't even look like a playoff team. Look up their record since the first 20 games or so....they've been one of the worst teams in the league, and that is a looong stretch of hockey.

also i think losing corvo and stillman hurt them

They lost Corvo and Eaves, and got back Commadore and Stillman. I'm not sure that deal has had much impact on the slump. They were having some trouble before the deal, and they've continued to have trouble since the deal. The problems much run deeper than missing a couple of depth role players.

yeah, i just noticed that about ottawa last night. they do hold their own fate: if they win their last two games, they can't drop past eighth place. if they lose both, and the flyers and bruins win one of their remaining three games, AND (less likely, though possible) washington wins both, they would be out.

washington's last two games are tampa bay and florida. the tampa series is 5-2 washington so far this season, though it's 3-3-1 against the panthers. senators play toronto, who, though the leafs suck, are actually leading the season series 4-3 and have won the last three games, plus the game is in toronto, and boston. ottawa leads the boston series 4-3, but have been outscored 13-18 thus far this season.

given the fact that washington has won nine out of their last eight and ottawa has won only four, and though ottawa's opponents aren't stellar in the last two games, this scenario isn't completely ridiculous to me. boston and philly would of course have to do their part as well, but if it was a situation where ottawa didn't win its last two games (the only situation in which washington could pass them) both of those teams could go 1-2-0 or 0-2-1 and still top the sens in points (though boston would, by default, have to win one of their games if ottawa were to lose their last two). if ottawa loses their last two, washington could even go 1-0-1 over their last two and get the three points they need.

if washington wins their last two games and ottawa goes 1-1-0, the teams will both have 94 points and forty three wins, but as of now, ottawa's got a wide edge in goals scored (almost twenty) which i believe is the next tie-breaker after wins (?). if washington wins both games but ottawa goes 0-0-2, they'd be tied in points but washtington would have one more win.

i hadn't really paid attention until now, but i guess a lot of this still depends on carolina. they're in the same situation as washington actually but are only atop the division because of their additional win. i hadn't realized it, but if washington wins both games (and carolina doesn't) they'll jump to third and carolina will be demoted to eighth. in that case, they'd get pushed out and the sens would stay in. hmmm... the 'canes also play tampa bay and florida, so it's a possibility that they could win both as well.

obviously, all this depends on the sens losing their last two games. which they may not. but for some reason (though i'm not real scared of ottawa -- i don't think they'd make it to the scf's if they make the cut) it would just be interesting to see the sens, who, at one time, plenty of people -- myself included -- were predicting them to win the conference easily and storm to the finals, drop out of the playoffs on the last day of the season.

best line in the league, my ass.

The tiebreaker is going to be the season series between the two teams, which i believe is in the caps favour..

if two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

Yeah, and the capitals swept the season series 4-0 over the sens.

if youre wondering why the sens suck so much go to tsn.ca, close your eyes and click. i guarantee you will hit something saying wow isnt it amazing how much the sens suck. i watch all their games and it has become an absolute comedy of errors. they make so many defensive mistakes its insane and right now theyre gripping their sticks too tight and are having 0 luck. JASON SPEZZA fought last night. the night before he went on tsn saying "bulls***! bulls***! everyone in this room is trying their asses off!" when asked if their poor performance was due to lack of effort. the team is in shambles and alfredsson is the worst captain ever. here's to hoping washington takes third, carolina gets 8th and ottawa and boston get put out. if ottawa must make it then i hope they get 3rd so they play ovechkin and he continues to make a mockery of them and i get to be in attendance.

"Alfredsson is a Euro. Spezza is a Canadian, AND he fights. Duh, CLEARLY Spezza is a better captain."

Get a life.
