To Bench....or not to Bench

It's no secret the Wings are struggling with a good deal of "nagging" injuries. Maltby is more than likely out for the first round, with Homer, Drapes, Stuart and Sammy coming back for the last game/done for the regular season. There's is absolutely nothing to prove/gain from Sunday's game, and you know the Wings are going to be playing a pissed-off Chicago team that just got eliminated from playoff contention last night.

So what do you do? Which players do you bench on Sunday?

NFM#25's scratches:

Lidstrom

Zetterberg

Dats (although it would be great to see him play and light up Khabi the way he always does and possibly hit the 100 point plateau)

Franzen

One of Kronwall or Rafalski

Unfortunately with the amount of guys already missing it'll look like the Giffins roster if the Wings sit a handful of players. That being said, I'm glad Homer is playing because he needs this game to get back to the feel/speed of things before Thursday.

Your scratches?

I'd bench all of those players, and dress only goons from the LNAH, kind of like that last scene in Slapshot.

This way we could run Chicago's players all night, and not have to worry about any of our regular guys getting suspended, or any of our important players getting injured.

Also, I'd dress Sammy.

mac i was talking to my dad about this last night. i agree with your scratches for sure. sit all of our key players and let this game be a "for fun" game. let the young'ns play so that the black cawks can feel like they have done something. they need all the help they can get.

You can only sit so many as Babs said last night. They don't have enough healthy 'bodies' the have the luxury of sitting all those that are mentioned.

But if he could sit 4 they should be Dats, Hank, Lids, Kronner. *ESPECIALLY NIK, with his freak injuries and all..*

Well, the way they played last night and the game before, they all need all the work they can get. You can't really hope to win a Cup based on a last-second, freak goal by Zetterberg. Let's hope they are "saving" all the goals for the playoffs.

I suspect at least Zetterberg and Cleary to be MIA, and probably Lids, Raffi and maybe Cheli. Personally, I'd sit Pavel, too, but he only needs 3 points to 100, so he will be out there, for sure.

Additional factors to the last game slide: they've clinched, it's a noon-time game (gross...I hate day games) and no one will care about this game since they are looking toward the playoffs now. Chances are, we're looking at a disinterested effort from a bunch of guys you don't normally see out there -- Griffins, in our case.

Sorry, Dom. You get this one on your resume, good luck! You're probably gonna need it.

PS - I went (all the way to San Jose) for the last game of the 2002 season. There were so many missing players that I spent the entire game trying to identify who was out there for Sharks fans... some of the players I'd never seen before and some, I wish I hadn't. Kuznetsov, for example.

The few veterans who "had" to play were pissed off, Manny got shelled and embarrassed, and the Sharks fans thought they'd won the Cup. I wanted to tell them, those were not the "actual" Red Wings. :hehe:

Lids

Dats

Z

Cheli

Flip

I know injuries are a worry in the last game but I don't think taking ALL of our good starters out of the lineup is kosher. You're supposed to put the best lineup out there (within reason). Downey and Mac should both play just to keep the possibility of cheapshots in check.

Give Abracadabra, Hartigan, Helm, Ericsson, and Quincey another game at NHL pace and then load up for Game 1 to stomp on the Preds/Flames.

bench our team and call up GR Griffs let Howie get a start

Actually just put out your preseason roster if you still them... same difference game is a wash anyways

i agree with most everything said, but if we want homer to come back and get into any rhythm at all he's going to have to play with someone ... given that pavel is close to 100, i say let him play with homer and flip, keep cleary and franzen in with huddles, whoever we have healthy to round out the bottom 2 lines, and rest hank, lids, and maybe one of kronner or rafalski if we enough warm bodies for all that ...

How are you going to scratch players when you have no one left you can play?

With Kopecky out and Homer coming back in, all you can replace is one person with McCarty.

You know, by sitting all of our guys, you all are saying goodbye to the Jennings. Look what happened with a full lineup against the Hawks last time.

IMO I think Ozzy and Dom deserve the credit and the Jennings, so I'd say play 'em all and give the lines equal times.

It's not like its going to be a no-holds barred cage match where the Hawks are trying to kill our guys with steel chairs and ladders, there are officials out there. (even though i wouldn't trust them with much) It will not get out of hand.

If you're going to sit someone ( and can afford to with almost everyone hurt) sit Z... maybe Dats. not our defense.

I'd play all of the Griffins, so that they could get some good NHL experience.
