Icteria virens 11 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 I understand the OP's point totally. It's getting rediculous how much crap is all over the ice. I'm against any more. Anybody else notice the NHL is doing things to mimick the NFL? First it was the ref with the mic to call penalties, just like the NFL and now reminding us it's the playoffs? Hey, I'm a fan, I know it's the f-ing playoffs! You don't have to remind me. I hate the reminder on NFL fields too. I didn't like the whole inner circle of the basketball court being taken up by the NCAA logo during the tournement either, I just think it's overkill. Some of the players were slipping on it as well. I really think this is just a way for them to get the casual channel surfer, "oh, this is the PO's, I should watch this now" Anybody switch over to the Frozen Four coverage? the NCAA doesn't allow advertising like the NHL but instead of leaving the boards realatively plain they went and covered them with dark blue most of the length. Result: you can easily loose the puck along the boards. Why not just leave them plain? And by the way, it does effect viewing as when the puck if over a dark surface it's easy to lose sight of it. Some areas are worse than others simply due to the type of products that are being advertised and their color patterns. and as long as we're bitching, how about seeing a team skate the cup or celebrate a trophy in sports without wearing the stupid t-shirts and caps? You know, like old time hockey?

Spinner 6 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 The only paint i want to remove is the trapezoid... I agree, but we don't need to add anymore either. They have the boards already, that should be enough.
Ontario Wingsfan 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 I can deal with the advertising on the ice, but if the NHL EVER goes the way of the Euorpean leagues with their ads then that's when i'll draw the line.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted April 11, 2008 I'm surprised this is such a big deal to some people. I'm a purist too, but I also understand that Hockey is a business first and foremost, whether we like it or not and every league has their own version of the playoff logo on their ice/field/court/etc. at this point of their respective seasons. Keep in mind that if it weren't for merchandising things like the playoffs the league wouldn't make as much money, which puts them a step closer to having a lockout. I for one care about never disrupting a season again far more than a logo just insides the blue lines.

Result: you can easily loose the puck along the boards. Why not just leave them plain? its because its the NCAA. When they played the basketball tournament, they weren't allowed to use any advertisement present. In fact, when they played at the Palace a few years ago, they had to cover up all the Detroit Pistons logos. Of course the irony in this whole thing is that they want to cover up logos for an NCAA sporting event but have no problem with the Capital One Citrus Bowl. Also, and I am curious if anyone else knows this..but you cannot buy beer at a big event like the Frozen or Final Four. Can you imagine if they told everyone they weren't going to sell beer at the Joe for the playoffs? There would be a riot! I for one care about never disrupting a season again far more than a logo just insides the blue lines. i do agree with this, but my main point is missed. this is a way Bettman and the NHL can segue these Playoff logos into ads. I do not want more ads on the ice, ESPECIALLY inside the zones. and to the Australian dude that is pro-Bettman and keeps rolling those super-awesome digital eyes... check out a picture of the european leagues ice surfaces... if that doesn't look like a nightmare to you, then I don't know what is. that's my point, that's what i'm afraid of. About a month ago, Bettman said on NHLradio that he wants to put ads down the sleeves of goalies next year. what's to stop him from putting ads inside the offensive zones. and yes, it's dark paint, it bothers me because i lose the puck for a split second. if you have superman eyes and can distinguish one tone of black from another, then great. you rule. Wow, they put the numbers on the shins? Someone's got the priorities wrong. If the NHL ever goes the way of the Euro leagues, I'll stop watching. I mean it.
