Real1 2 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Simple as the title. Who are your favorites? Even thought I hate Pierre with a passion, I would have to go with Doc and Eddie from NBC. Who are your faves?
Opie 308 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Doc Emmerick needs to move on, did you see how bad he is shaking, he looks to not be doing so well health wise. But I have to say after watching the Sox/Yanks on ESPN last night anything has to be better than the threesome of Gammons, Miller, Morgan. Watching and listening to them is like watching some one die a very slow painful death. So they make any announcers look like gold!!
Real1 2 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I would have to agree on the threesome you have there. They do throw in some cool facts now and then, but other than that they do get pretty boring. Another pair I love is the 1st crew of HNIC. They are pretty good.
Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Darren Pang is far and away my favorite. Gotta love "Holy Jumpin". You can tell he loves hockey waay to much- if that's possible. I love it! I might be in the minority here, but I always liked Bill Clement too. Edited April 14, 2008 by Wings_Fan_In_Exile
PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Gary Thone and Bill Clemente .. loved when these guys did the wings playoffs in the 90's on espn
Real1 2 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I always thought that Bill Clement was the John Madden of hockey. He seems to say things that are pretty much common sense. One time I remember was during the finals against the Canes. And I quote.... "It is just stupid, when the wings fire the puck all the way down the ice, that is icing." Just my thought.... WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Bob Cole and Jim Hughson from HNIC always do a great job. Bob does game 1 and Jim will do game 2 usually. Both are very knowledgeable of the game, they know when to shut up, when to let the play speak for itself, and thye will give balanced commentary (Bob Cole is the only person I can listen to while watching Leaf games). Jim Hughson has the best play-by-play voice as well. I was hoping VS. would go after him since his contract was going to be up this year but I think him going anywhere other than TSN or CBC was out of the question. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Doc Emrick is not such a bad commentator but his voice is all nasally and I don't like listening to it. Thorne, Clement, and Pang made a great bunch to listen to. Gary Thorne calling a game - especially a Wings playoff game - is one of the great underrated experiences in hockey. Probert 5 For Fighting 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Since I'm such a critical a-hole, I guess it's only appropriate to say who I think stand above the fray. Agreed with the Darren Pang, Bill Clement suggestions. Very good commentating, they never stray from the action, and they display the right kind of enthusiasm(not the Mcguire 'i wanna shoot you in the head' kind). And a subtle recommendation for John Davidson - I thought he was fine, mostly because I remember him from all those NHL '98 in-game videos. Gary Thorne is disqualified because he covers everything for ESPN. I want hockey guys, damn it. But I will admit, every memory I have from our Cup Years is accompanied by his play-by-play in the background. I guess he's solid then. "IT COUNTS! IT COUNTS!" The guys over at VS are meh. Keith Jones and Eddie are your typical dumb former players who are all cutesy and nostalgic in the booth. They're not as bad as player-turned-analysts in other sports(Jalen Rose, Jamal Mashburn, Emmitt Smith, John Kruk)..but they're not great either.
David 2 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Gary Thorne brings back good memories and makes the play exciting. He covers the NCAA tournament on ESPN and it really brings back the old NHL memories. Edited April 14, 2008 by David
McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Gary Thorne and Bill Clement Nothing beats Gary Thorne's yell when someone scores. The versus guy that did the Rangers/Devils game sounds like a seal mating call when he yells "SCORES".
Real1 2 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Nothing beats Gary Thorne's yell when someone scores. The same can be said for the Wings radio play-by-play man Ken Kal. Sounds like he is grabbing himself every time the Wings score. To Funny.
pjgj13 30 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I like the oldies.... Dave Strader & Mickey Redmond Al Kaline & George Kell
jpfalcon09 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Dave Strader is still my favorite, I grew up with him doing the Wings games with Mickey. Behind him, I'd have to say Chris Cuthbert on TSN (formerly CBC), he does a great job with playoff games and has a great voice.

kevotron 3 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 OK There's BOB COLE and then there is everyone else. Panger's not bad. I dont mind Emmerick, he is very enthusiastic. Believe it or not, I actually find Kelly Hrudey to be rather insightful in a laid back Canadian way. I just want to know when the Bare Naked Ladies need their haircut back. Bill Clement is a tool. He has zero personality. I think Mike Milbury and Barry Melrose both suck ad infinitum. Melrose: continuous bad mouthing of the Wings for so long makes him seem like some bitter 40+ year old woman still harboring a grudge against the guy that stood her up for prom in high school. Let it go Barry, let the healing begin! Give Dr. Phil a call. Mike Milbury: Sucked his way out of a real job and now we get to listen to him and his jibba jabba. I pity the fool! Hey, maybe he could take over the Wings if they cant sign Babcock, then we could see trades like these: Henrik Zetterberg and 1st round pick for Richard Simmons Pavel Datsyuk for Boyd Deveraux Nicklas Lidstrom and Johan Franzen for Ray Pitau, Dr Tayfour, Leo Racicot, Greg Montforton, some Tim Horton's coupons and a big bowl of Poutin (thats the Canadian delight consisting of french fries, cheese curds and gravy if you dont know). Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Mike Emrick is ok, but I'll take him over Gary Thorne any day. My friends used to get seriously pissed in bars if they switched from the CBC to the ESPN feed, we despised Thorne so. Jim Hughson (SAVE BY LU-OOOONNNNGOO!) does a nice job on CBC. Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda do a fabulous job for SJ--they are exciting and informative yet avoid being homers and call it as they see it. I don't mind a bit when Center Ice picks up the SJ feed when Detroit plays there. Ralph Strangis and Daryl Reaugh do a nice job for the Stars. Brent Severyn is the best radio color commentator, bar none.

Hahahahhahahahahahaha. I would make that trade for a big bowl of poutine and Dr. Tayfour. And while Dr. Tayfour is with us maybe he can help fix some referees vision. miller76 463 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 This is far from a majority vote, but growing up in southern California, I always enjoyed listening to Bob Miller (Kings announcer for 35 years) just a clear sounding professional.

SpiritFan 37 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I would have to say that other than Ken & Mickey, my favorite commentator duos in the NHL are Paul Steigerwald (sp?) & Bob Errey (yes, THAT Bob Errey) in Pittsburgh & then Dave Strader & Darren Pang in Phoenix.
