egroen 384 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Yup... clearly have not watched them play. If they can produce offensively, they are automatically no better than "average" at defense.
Kira 451 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 So now what about all of the posters who said he wouldn't even get nominated?? Bueller anyone Bueller!!!!! And for those of you who think it is childish that I point out others posts like this, good, I am trying to make a point to those people that they aren't the all knowing hockey gods they think they are!!!!! Now, see, if I had said something like this, I would have had my head handed to me on a platter. I'm glad you said it so I didn't. I've been wanting Pasha to get this nomination for the last two months, and I am thrilled that both he and Henrik have been nominated. I honestly believe it's gonna be Pasha's. No disrespect to Henrik, but Pasha played all 82 games this year, and his stats show that. Would it not be great to see him walk off with the Selke, the Byng, the Conn Smythe and the Cup??? Talk about the piece de resistance!
Kira 451 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 (edited) Sorry for the double post - I didn't mean for that to happen. The fact that this is the first time both of them have gotten the nod, or even considered, is kind of surprising, after the things they have done over time. I'm just tickled to see them both getting some recognition for their work. Edited April 25, 2008 by Kira
RedArmy 4 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 (edited) Out of the 3 it has to be Datsyuk hands down. Most take aways and + - rating is the best in the league. how many times this season we saw Datsyuk make opposition look like asses by slipping the pack away, or by coming back and ruining scoring chances for rushing forwards... McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 (edited) I was just wondering: can there be a tie? I mean is it mathematically possible to have both Dats and Z win the award? Edited April 25, 2008 by McCartyFanForLife

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I was just wondering: can there be a tie? I mean is it mathematically possible to have both Dats and Z win the award? Datsyuk and Zetterberg are not tied. Although its statiscally possible, there would be four nominees if two players were tied. That was the case last year when Kiprusoff, Brodeur, Lundqvist, AND Luongo were all nominated for the Vezina.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 (edited) I believe it was Kipper and Lundqvist who ended up tied for third. Edit: wrong tender Edited April 25, 2008 by YoungGuns1340
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 It should be Zetterberg's award. Madden and Datsyuk should be a close competition for second place. Glad to see Rod Brind'Amour won't be getting any more 'lifetime achievement' Selke awards anymore...He was more deserving of the Selke in the mid 90s than in the years he won, and against tougher competition. Brind'Amour has always been a good defensive forward, but he has never once been the best in the league. I am surprised to see Dats nominated, honestly. I don't think his defense is any better than about five or six other guys who have a reputation as top defensive players, and Datsyuk came into the year carrying a reputation as a liability that I expected to deprive him of some votes. He probably won't win, but that's due more to Z's total dominance than anything else.
Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I think both of them are such excellent and deserving candidates. Its funny because it seems that you notice Zets defense more than Dat's but the article is correct about him just subtly taking care of business and getting the take aways without all the obvious actions. BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 This is excellent news, totally unexpected too. I knew they were deserving, but didn't expect them to get recognition. I thought I'd see Sharp, M. Richards, and maybe Dats or Z at the other candidate. Not both.

Z may be a better all around player, but Dats is a more dangerous player. He is someone you don't want to have the puck at either end of the ice if you are playing against him. I think it will be close. I picked Dats over Z and Pahlsson for the Selke earlier in the season.

Z works harder to pressure opposing forwards (at least it seems this way to me). But if a puck gets within Pavel's reach in most cases it means an end to the other teams offensive opportunity (and he knows how to place himself in the zone to make it happen). Anyway, I like Lady Bing better - more finesse and less grit.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I don't think anyone, including the voters know what they're looking for in this award. Whether it's plus/minus, or shorthanded goals, or whether a candidate is a star or a checking forward. It's a very hard award to judge, unless you focus on that player alone each time he's on the ice, even if he doesn't have the puck. Only coaches watch the game that way, or you have to be in person to watch it, since you can't look for that on TV. Also, speaking of shortanded goals, I don't believe either Pavel or Hank had very many, and I'm not sure how many Madden had, but that could factor into the voters minds. David 2 Report post Posted April 26, 2008 This may not be particularly relevant as far as Selke consideration, but I was really impressed by Pavel's ability to win battles along the boards all season long. He consistently won a TON of battles every game. At times it seemed that if he was involved along the boards, you just knew he'd come up with the puck. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted April 26, 2008 Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong again. It's Pavel's. While I rank Pavel in the top five defensive forwards, he is not better defensively than Z. He's just not. Contention, sure. But there's no way Dats is better defensively than Z. It's just not the case.

Doggy 130 Report post Posted April 26, 2008 I'm really glad both Pav and Hank have been nominated. They as well as Madden are all very worthy candidates however I have no doubt one of our boys will get it. Which one I don't know. I'll be really happy with either one. Winning the Selke is an awesome achievement - I hope one day they both can get the honour. To be honest, I don't understand how anyone sit and argue that one will get it over the other. Stats just don't cut it, this award is very hard to judge and both D and Z's defensive skills are exceptional. I don't care who wins out of them - they both deserve it. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted April 26, 2008 Congrats to them both, thoroughly deserved. My great fear is that they will split the vote and neither will end up winning it For me, Datsyuk deserves it this year. Last year Zetterberg was definately the better defensive player, but this year Pav has taken it to a whole new level. To his already hard-working back check, and cunning puck-stripping, he has improved his physical play and become stronger along the boards. And right now he is the Wings playoff MVP as well - go Datsyuk!
