octopi swinging

He didn't swing it on the ice. If you watched carefully, you could see on the scoreboard during Vs. pregame that the the linesman had carried an octopus off the ice. Al grabbed it by the Zamboni entrance and swung it over his head while off the ice, the crowd still saw it and went crazy.

it took them like 2 mins scraping and shoveling it up.

yeah, took them forever... i think i'm finally seeing Fairy Bettman's plan for this...

the linesman don't know what they're doing, so if Al doesn't come out there, then they have to do it and it takes them so long that Vs has to take an extra commercial break... One extra set of commercials, more money! money money money! Well done, Fairy.

 with the refs taking so long to do the clean up, the next step will be to penalize the Wings for delay of game.

Just curious, does anyone know what the record for most octopus's (octopi?) thrown in one game is? Maybe we can break it...

I just looked it up. Its 54, during one of the Finals games when the Wings were swept by the Devils.

Sobotka said in 1996 that an unofficial record of 54 octopuses were thrown during one game of the 1995 Stanley Cup final series between Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils.

There you have it.

OH. MY. GOD. (Chandler Bing!). We should try and break it. That would be ******* sweet. Every 90 second break, a few octopi thrown. That would be insane. And it would be AWESOME press for hockey and for the Wings. Thats the type of stuff that could make the national news.

"In other news, 89 octopi were invariably thrown to the ice during an NHL playoff game yesterday featuring the Detroit Red Wings and [insert Eastern Conference team here cause were going to the finals]"

According to that article posted earlier, a boiled octopus is only 7 bucks. Thats definitely worth it.

I think it would be better if like 60 people sprinted down the stairs and threw them all at the same time...

Imagine how beautiful that would be.

Ya, Pierre said that Draper was yelling "it would be faster if Al did it".. The refs got a good laugh at it as did a couple of the Wings on the bench

 awesome! It took them forrrrrrrrrrrever to get it off the ice. Seriously. gah this all pisses me off.

I would seriously get shivers down my spine if that happened. Imagine having a 15 minute break for all the octopi to be cleaned up (not to mention the wrath of vocals from the crowd). Imagine what the other team would be thinking.

I listen to XM's show with Bettman every week. Last night a fan called in to question Bettman about the fine. He said, and i'm paraphrasing, that the league was concerned about octipi "goop" being flung onto the ice. And that the octipi goop might cause a player to catch and edge and injure himself. He isn't trying to screw with a tradition. He's just worried about players safety on the ice. I can see his point. But I have yet to see someone injured by an octopi "goop".

The co-host called Bettman a softy. And said that he couldn't see how the NHL could support anyone throwing anything on the ice. Which Bettman responded with "its an emotional issue, I agree with what you said. But I didn't want to take that road with this issue" Once again I'm paraphrasing.

I think that the linesmen were told to make a show of "scraping" the octopi off the ice. Have you ever seen it take so long before? I think this is a bunch of bulls***! I have never seen or heard of any "matter" from the octopi being on the ice. Don't you think that we would of heard of any problems in the past 56 years???? I want to know who has the power that put a bug in Bettmans ear.

What Bettman says is crap. He's not going to stop people throwing it onto the ice simply by threatening a fine to Al over swinging it. Al doesn't throw it. The fans do. That won't ever stop, and thank god for that. The NHL doesn't have to support anything. Just don't do anything when Al swings it. Just Like they've been doing nothing about it for the last 50 years or however long it's been.

I hope swings it off the ice just he like he did for every time it happens.

In defense of the linesmen that cleaned up the octopus last night. (I know... ugh. Just hear me out) The octopus last night was cooked incorrectly. It was a big mess, and all it did was splat when it hit the ice.

I only saw part of the clean up as I was watching online and the feed kept freezing, but like I said I've never seen a major clean up like that one before. I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories but what about a sudo fan not cooking the octopi properly on purpose. I guess my question was has anyone ever seen that major of a mess before or was this done for 'show' to prove Bettmans point.
