FinWing 26 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 So I just heard this in the news on Finnish TV channel "Nelonen" but I'm not sure where they got the information from. The anchorman just said that Leino is "close to signing a contract with the Red Wings" and they usually don't talk out of their asses, they must be onto something. I'm trying to find some more substantial information and valid sources but the report sounded pretty convincing. Anyway, we're talking about the second-leading scorer in the Finnish Elite League this season and he was a stud in the playoffs too before his team Jokerit Helsinki got knocked out in the second round. He was named the league's best player in the regular season. I think he's an interesting option to look at, a real team-first guy and a hard worker with decent skills and strength. I figured this would be worth discussing amidst all the Brunnstrom talk. Ville Leino @ Wikipedia
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Nevermind Brunnstrom,eh? Well the guy is big, tough to knock off the puck AND a great passer. We'd be lucky to have him.
FinWing 26 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Exactly, I immediately thought he'd be a good fit in Detroit. He sort of reminds me of Zetterberg in a lot of ways, he likes the puck-possession game. He also seems to be a good team guy and steps it up in clutch situations. Not to mention Red Wings have generally managed late bloomers very well.
motorcitykid 42 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 Let the Leafs have Brunnstrom. That way he's either gonna be a bust there, or request a trade within a year or two. No way it will work out for them. Hahaha.

FinWing 26 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 And we have enough Swedes anyway, let's rather sign a Finnish teammate for Flip.
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted May 8, 2008 I believe that Matt Hussey played a few games over there so the Wings could have a bit of inside knowledge on Ville as a person as well as a player.
Finnish Hammer 1 Report post Posted May 8, 2008 I believe that Matt Hussey played a few games over there so the Wings could have a bit of inside knowledge on Ville as a person as well as a player. Yeah, Matt played 11 games last season (0+3), but he was, well, s***! But Shedden played him in 3rd and 4th lines with limited icetime. But back to Leino. I have not heard or read anything about Ville signing with Wings (or anyother NHL team). All I know he must sign before 1st of June. And all he can get is a two-way one year deal. (correct me if im wrong). I would love to see him play with the wings but he must play in top 2 lines, so that would meant that Holland and co. must kick Samuelsson out or some one else... I will report if anything happens with this matter, as will propably the other Finns too
egroen 384 Report post Posted May 8, 2008 Pretty sure you can not sign a one-way deal until you are 28. Interesting to see all these late bloomers, and I'll be surious where they land and if they pan out.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted May 9, 2008 What is with all the free agent Euros starting to draw so much interest. As long as it's for GR only, sure sign him up. They need all the help they can get. But I dont want to see him on the Wings, just as I didnt Bruunstrom. Downey and McCarty worked for there spots, and I'd like to see them keep them. I'm sure Leino knows he has to earn his keep, especially in Detroit. He's really come on the past two seasons and that's why he's only now starting to draw interest. His attitude shouldn't be a problem, hopefully Flip will give him some pointers as to what is expected of a Detroit Red Wing.
