MonkeyGoalie 14 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Looks like the next Winter Classic might not be in Yankee Stadium. Winter Classic 2 : Yahoo I personally would like the West to have the winter classic this year since the east had it last year, but with reading that the gov of Pennsylvania wrote a letter to Bettman about having a game between Pens/Flyers they would get it over the Blackhawk, because you have to have the NHL poster boy at the center of all these big games. But that's my two cents about it.
FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Heres my idea... Double header hockey games at the Big House in Ann Arbor. Afternoon game - Michigan vs. Michigan State. Night game - Detroit vs. Toronto. This would be huge. You would have two of the premier college institutions squaring off that would give good exposure to NCAA hockey and the game of hockey itself. The night game would be the Wings and Leafs. This would draw tons of people from all over Michigan as well as people from Ontario. (both big markets) If the tickets were priced right you would undoubtedly see the hockey attendance record shattered. Nothing in terms of exposure, ratings, and attendance could top it. The Yankee stadium game would be cool, but I'd think the Rangers and the Bruins would get the nod for that one.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Why the hell would Philly and the Pens play? They have a national stage right now, playing a 7 game (if Philly had any decent skill) series. Give it to the West, let the world know there are more hockey teams than the Penguins.

DallasStars 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 I agree it should be West and probably original 6. So, Detroit vs. Chicago.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 I agree it should be West and probably original 6. So, Detroit vs. Chicago. Or a rare cross-over. Detroit vs Toronto. I'm nto sure Chicago has a big enough fan base right now. Give them a few more years to recover from the blackouts the past decade.

I think he would want to isolate the NHL from other "leagues" including the collegite level. But, I think it is a phenomenal idea.
tiff_luvs_homer 5 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) I don't care who plays, it was just fun sitting on the couch watching the game and relaxing and recovering from new Year's eve. Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 I always liked Wings vs Toronto, and if I recall correctly, that has been the general consensus since Winter Classic I. What makes it less appealing, though, is Toronto isn't that great of a team, and who knows if Sundin will be back next season. For that reason, alone, if the Wings are going to be a part of WCII, then I think it should be Wings vs Montreal or Rangers; two original six teams from opposite conferences, both playoff teams, and the Wings might be Stanley Cup champions at that point, will will bring further incentive.
