How is this classless? Teams do this ALL THE TIME.

If you can sellout to local fans, why would you want anyone else in?

I've never heard of this happening. It's their right, obviously, but I would consider this very poor sportsmanship. I was very happy there was a big contingent of Pens fans at the game Monday. I sat in the middle of a bunch of them. It added to the excitement of the game all the way around for me, and encourages Wings fans to be a little more vocal. I have to say I'm a little disappointed about this.

All someone needs to do (or needed to do as all the tickets are gone now anyway) was get in touch with Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.

Same thing happened with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were looking to lock New York Giants fans out of a Bucs home game too. They pulled the same trick, but they didn't count on the fact that New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was ready, wiling and able to use the full power of his office to knock Ticketmaster back into line.

I think it would be too little too late at this point

It's a weak move. Wings fans pop up in arenas everywhere. Phoenix did something like this to keep the crowd from exceeding 50% Wings fans, but that's a different kind of problem. I read that Pens fans got ahold of a code that was reserved for Wings season ticket holders that allowed them to buy tickets at a discount. It got posted on a Pens message forum and word spread quickly.

Look at Toronto and Montreal. When they play each other, there's a huge contingent of fans from the visiting teams in their arenas. It adds to the whole experience, IMO. To go out of the way to prevent it is lame.

I never heard of that. I live in Chicago, and the Cubs (who sell out almost every game), Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks have zero restrictions on who can buy tickets. Furthermore, they don't cancel already purchased tickets if somebody's credit card is from out-of-state. My bank is in NY, but I live in Chicago, should I be penalized because of that?

When I lived in NY, none of the teams there did a residency check for ticket purchases.

Plus They're allowing other residents from further away the ability to buy tickets. Its bulls*** plain and simple.

Based on our inability to fill our own arena, I don't think we have to worry about transplant fans making the trek to Pittsburgh.

Actually the Wings have a huge following all over the country. I went to a Caps game in 1998 after they were swept by the Wins in the SCF. Fully half of the arena was wearing red. The whole row I sat in was wings fans. Our fans are like the Yankees, they are everywhere.

People aren't going to the Joe because they are fair-weather fans, no. They aren't going to the Joe because the economy in Michigan is in a deep depression right now and people are choosing to eat and keep a roof over their heads instead of going to Wings games. Its pretty plain to see.

I went to a Leafs-Habs game in January 2007 in Toronto, had to do the wrist band thing and got 2 of the last 4 they had that day. Sat in the nose-bleeds and had a fantastic time. I was expecting fireworks from all the fans there, but everybody seemed to be pretty cool. Canadians know how to have fun at a hockey game, damn that was fun! Unlike Chicago where Hawks fans are assholes to visiting fans. Hell, they're assholes to each other. Damn shame.

Leafs vs Habs @ Toronto is an awesome experience. I went in November of 2005. I bought tickets off Ebay. First row 2nd level for about $350. One of the best games I've ever been too.

I'm not going to get into another one of those tired arguments filled with excuses about our poor attendance, but spare me the talk about keeping a roof over their heads and making it seem like Michigan is Ethiopia. A little more clearity to the situation, please. Thousands upon thousands of people fill up Ford Field to watch the most Godforsaken team in the NFL, a one-year wonder Tigers team, and the Pistons each and every year. Organizations in other sports all across the country are keeping their attendance up despite their OWN economic depressions, and they're not in the Stanley frikken Cup finals. I drive up 2 hours to Tampa Bay to watch a Rays game every now and then, and I'm lower-middle class in a struggling housing market strapped with 4.00 gas too. I cut off other nonessentials for the sake of supporting my team. It's that simple.

But that's not what the topic is about, so I'll let the original discussion carry on.

Since were not talking about poor attendance, the stupid Ford Field argument is very simple

Ford Field:

8 Games x 65000 seats = 520,000 tickets per season

JLA:

82 Games x 22000 seats = 1,804,000 tickets per season

Fans of the Lions about 3.5 times less tickets to get in a season. Someone isn't going to try really hard to make a Wings game when another will be played 2 or 3 nights later. With the Lions, you only have 8 games all season to get tickets (since there is no way in hell they will make the playoffs). I hate this argument because it doesn't make sense.

Also, the fact that the NFL is way more popular than the NHL.

couldn't you use Craigslist, ebay, stubhub, or any other kind of ticket reseller?

Yeah you can do all of those things, there are ways around it. I can't afford any of those prices so I'm left just watching on TV. That's not the point, the point is Mellon Arena is doing what it can to keep Wings fans from attending. That's s***ty, just like punching Mule in the head. But then, what do you expect from crybabies?

Local issues have nothing to do with this, the fact is the Wings are a huge draw on the road and Detroit fans fill the seats at visiting arenas. There are Wings fans all over the country, not just the ones who make the trek from Michigan.

I'm about to move to Phoenix and there are tons of Wings fans living in the valley. So, what does management do, they raise single game ticket prices for Wings games. Won't keep me from going (I've seen them play there twice already), but I think it's a s***ty thing to do when you're trying to sell the game to anyone who'll watch.

If they are going to start charging more for good teams or teams with a large fan base shouldn't they then charge less than standard for crappy teams or teams with a smaller fan base?

qft... as a giants fan, i would know... it was a lameass attempt by the bucs back then, and still is a cheesedick move by mellon arena and the pens now... why do teams feel like they need to resort to this kinda crap?

Is it going to change the attendence that much if they lower the price of a ticket of the tuesday in october vs. the panthers? Im thinking not enough to warrent the change. I know they do that with Purdue football tickets the warm up games are priced less than the big 10 season, and still don't sell out.

41 games, dude.

Also, 20,066 seats.

So, 520,000 against 822,706. BIG difference from what you're claiming.

Anyway this isn't the first time. Carolina did the same thing in the '02 Finals.
