Opie 308 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 I was watching vids on TSN and in the "back in the series" one one of the analysts mentions that the Wings org approached the league and asked if Det could go back and spend time at their facility and with their families during the 2 day break. The league said no that is not how it happens in the SCF. Why? Does anyone have any idea why the league would make a team stay, I mean what is the flight from Pit to Det 45 mins? Unless the league has something to do with fitting the bill, but I can't imagine that is true. My guess they don't want it any different than if the LA Kings were playing the Bruins; too far for that series so the Wings can't come back home... another awesome bullet point on Bettman's stellar record. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 Incase something were to happen, like God forbid the plane crashes. NHL cares about money, not people. Gimme a break. I know its a business first, but don't make it sound like the league exploits its players. I would think it has to do with keeping things even. If the Pens had to stay in Detroit the entire time (even though they got to stay one day less due to the layoff), so does Detroit in Pittsburgh.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 (edited) Maybe they just want them more accessible to the media, so they have someone to talk to when Crosby goes down for his nap. Actually, I'm really surprised that there is any league mandate on that. You'd think the coaches/GM/owners would have the say in where their team goes on off days. I could see them mandating that the team be in town X number of hours before the game in case of travel delays that could effect the start of the game. This would be more of a concern in cases where travel time by road would be out of the question. Maybe that's the reason. Do we really want to see a Cup game forfeited because the plane wasn't cleared for takeoff due to weather? Maybe the rule was set up for situations where the 2 teams involved were from greater distances. Edited May 30, 2008 by 55fan
Opie 308 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 The other thing mentioned in the vid is that Babs took the team out of the hotel and on a "secret outing", meaning he didn't tell the media. I wonder where they went, can you imagine walking around the aquarium and here comes Z and D with a bag of peanuts talking about Emperor Penguins not Pittsburgh Penguins! NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 They went to a 'spa' - perhaps to get a pedicure and their beards trimmed? What we did on our day off Slightly OT here, but that article sums up why I love Babcock and how much confidence I have in him leading this team. Zetterberg and Datsyuk have learned their lessons about this, though. Earlier this season, after a game in which they hadn't heeded the 35-second shift mandate, the next practice Babcock made them skate the lengths of their longest shifts, about a minute. "We were bag skating for a minute for seven or eight times and he said, 'You can't play like this,' and we pretty much agreed," Zetterberg said, referring to when players are forced to skate to exhaustion. The unit didn't produce nearly as many good chances as the second one did Wednesday and really hasn't all series. That message was made clear to the first unit before Game 3. Babcock showed a film of things done well on the power play in Game 2 and didn't include any clips of Zetterberg's unit. "It was all the other guys," Zetterberg said, smiling. "So it was a little hint that we need to play a little better. "He is pretty good at telling us what he wants. He knows what buttons to push, if he wants something going. Sometimes you get really mad at him, but it turns out it was the right decision because you play better out there. I think I play better when I'm a little bit feisty, and he knows how to get me there." Babcock also knows when to give his players a rest; he has been consistent at giving them one day off a week almost all season, and that goes for the playoffs, too. "Today we will just relax, get our workout gear, play a little two-touch and try to think about something else than hockey," Zetterberg said. "And tomorrow we will come back here and we will have a good skate and go over our game plan again and get focused, ready to go for Saturday." Thanks for posting. Opie 308 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 I think two touch soccer means you only get two touches on the ball, or if a guy touches you with two hands (ala two hand touch football) you have to give the ball up.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 Anyone else think the Wings are taking the loss a little too hard? They've had many worse losses thsi season and playoffs that didn't faze them, yet the team seems to be thinking they lost whatever they had going for them. Aside from 2 of those quotes that I've published, the Wings are absolutely not being too hard on themselves. Most of the news coming out talks about how the Wings aren't going to change too much and are feeling loose and confident. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 I think two touch soccer means you only get two touches on the ball, or if a guy touches you with two hands (ala two hand touch football) you have to give the ball up. I dunno about that. It just means you only get 2 touches of the ball -the first to control it, the 2nd to pass/shoot. I imagine its a game Anaheim don't play much on their off days As to why they have to stay in Pittsburgh, I'm almost certain it will be to do with the media. Surprised Detroit asked to go back actually, as I remember in the 02 finals even at home, the Wings players were staying in a hotel.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 Slightly OT here, but that article sums up why I love Babcock and how much confidence I have in him leading this team. You and me both. Babcock is the kind of coach this team has needed since Bowman retired. When you see how he reacts to a loss versus how someone like Therrien reacts...well, it's no contest who the better coach is. Yeah the second part was a guess, just because you wouldn't want guys trying to steal or slide tackle the ball away from each other and a guy come up with a calf or ankle injury. The first guess was what I thought.

All different kind of balls on the field. You can move all around unless you're holding a ball. You have to pass it and then you can move.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 I was wondering if they were going to go back to Detroit for the off days, but I'd rather they stay in Pittsburgh. I would think they'd be more focused there and have less distractions then if they went home.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted May 30, 2008 Also now, they're reporting that the team is required to stay in Pittsburgh for the media to promote the game, same as the Pens were required to stay in Detroit. It makes perfect sense, TBH.

It makes perfect sense, TBH. The only big problem I have with this is why not schedule the 2-day layoff BETWEEN cities?? For example between games 2 and 3, or 4 and 5?? That way the home team could spend one extra day in their town before traveling. I guess that would make too much sense. I really hate the 2-day layoffs, reminds me of the NBA.
