What to do in Detroit

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Though I mentioned this in the GDT, Shelly and I are making the trip for Game 5. We'll be leaving early tomorrow morning and driving to Detroit to watch the game. We found out we got tickets late Friday night, and have been floored ever since.

That being said, we're wondering what goes on in Detroit after a SCF game, and where to go once the game concludes? Is anyone else going that wants to get together for a drink, and whats the place to be at?

Also, if anyone wants to meet up during the game, post your seats in this thread, and we'll figure out a spot to meet during an intermission.

Our seats are Section 219, Row 20, Seats 9 & 10

That's awesome you got tickets man, I know how bad you wanted them. We'll be in section 216, row 5.

Me and the wife plan on going to Hockeytown on woodward avenue in afternoon and then Greektown for an early dinner, then stopping by Astoria bakery and then heading to game.

I also heard they have beer tents, band playing at JLA by waterfront before game??? This true, if so where exactly???

Go Wings Go!!!

That's good to know about the Waterfront entertainment. Shelly and I are planning on leaving at 6:30 tomorrow morning which should put is in Detroit around 3:00. I'm sure we'll get a bite to eat, and I'd like to go to Hockeytown Cafe or Cheli's Chili but I'm not sure if we'd even get a seat being withing 3-4 hours of puck drop.

Does anyone know how early we should be at either of those eateries?

Also, we'll be heading to Greektown either before (depending on time) or after just because Shelly has never been there.

Generally hockey town is packed near 5. Seeing as how this is the clinching game, it may be closer to 3. Cheli's has a lot of seating, generally if level one is full they open up the second floor, I've never had a problem showing up at 630 for a quick bite before a game...including non-cup playoffs games.

Thanks a ton. Shelly and I were still trying to figure out which one to go to and this definitely helps.

Anyone else going, and perhaps want to get a drink after the game?

A man after my own heart! Its a tradition for my family to go there everytime we are in greektown. Strawberry shortcake for me cookine for dad chocolate moose for my brother and boclava for mom....

anyways, hockeytown is usually good, but can get really busy really early. Luckily the tigers are playing in oakland tomarrow so you wont have to battle the tigers crowd along with the wings. if you chose greektown for before the game for dinner i recomend pegasus (sp?) its where i usually always go. GREAT food, but not the biggest place, so if you are looking this way i would call for reservations. If you're looking for after the game fun, you can try the Casino. Im sure that will be rocking with some wings fans after the game. People are ganna be feeling really lucky after a wings victory, gambling will be a plenty!

Do not DARE get one of the most fabulous meals avaialable in Detroit City proper.

Do not get a couple coneys from either Lafayette Coney Island or American Coney Island.

Don't.

Do not order 2 coneys with, and an order of chili cheese fries dropped twice. And a Coke.

I won't allow it.

aloha

Been telling knuckleheads on this site for 3 years to do it, but....alas.......no. So don't. Miss out. Tired of trying.

EDIT:::::::::

I hope you CHOKE on your Cheli's Chili, or Chili's Cheli or whatever.

(OK- that was off-base and outta-line...........sorry......frustrated and craving.....sorry.)

Cheli's is awesome. I'd definitely hit that up. I'm not a fan of Hockeytown Cafe at all. It's a pretty cool building, but the food was kind of blah and way overpriced (at least when I was there a few years ago). The Little Caesar's pizza at the Joe is AMAZING.

Have fun dude! That's really awesome that you're going! Drive safe!

We just deciced on hitting Greektown before going to the Joe. We've never been to Pizza Papalis and it looks like a winning spot to us! We have about a three hour drive, so hopefully I don't get held up and can get right about of work at noon!

Hoping there will be real cause to celebrate after the game! We've already booked a hotel for the night instead of driving right home after the game - just in case!

Our seats are in section 207 - row 16 or 17...

Just a little tip. If you are going to drive to the rink, try to approach the Joe from the North side. If you take 375 to Jefferson, take a right onto Washington, and a left onto Congress there is a valet parking garage. During the regular season it's only $10 to park there. From the garage, it's an easy walk through Cobo to the Joe. Safe, reasonable, and easy. If you use google maps and search 'Joe Louis Arena', and use the satellite image you can get a great view of the place, it's the building right at the corner of Washington and Congress. Enjoy the game, and don't forget to take and post some pics of Lidstrom holding the Cup!

Just a heads up with Pizza Papalis, make sure you give yourself plenty of time since it can take 45 minutes to get your pizza if you get deep dish, and not to mention the wait that you might run into with the amount of people that are gonna be down there tomorrow.... I hope you enjoy it since it's the best pizza I've ever had besides deep dish in Chicago....

And if i were you I'd stop by Layfayette Coney Island after the game for a coney or two....

Go Wings and have fun downtown!!!!

I will be in Detroit with friends. We won't be watching the game, but there is a hotel lobby almost across the street from Cobo where we will most likely watch the game. And after, who knows. If ur going to be downtown after the game, PM me your number and I'll give you a ring as I don't know where exactly we will be after. We will definitely be drinking tho, I'm a bartender myself and one of my friends who is going is a bartender also.

We like to pound a few.
