Holland Tells Quincey to Work on His Fighting

Ericsson's fought just as much if not more than Quincey over the past two years in the AHL, and there's no such thing as a player who is too valuable to be sitting in the box for a fight, if you pick your spots and you know when to fight, it is well worth the 5 minutes, you'd miss 1, maybe 2 shifts.

Not if you're Rick Nash or Sidney Crosby. Would the coach or owner of those two players really want to see them break their hand in a fight? Especially if they have players on the team to handle that sort of thing?

Rick Nash admitted that after he fought Jim Vandermeer late in the season, GM Scot Howsen, gave him an earful.

Ericsson isn't in their class, but I don't think a kid with his apparent talent will need to drop the gloves all the time. Pronger gets in a handful of fights a year so it's not out of line to think that Ericsson could have just as few.

Great news and hopefully means Lilja will not be offered another contract.

Whether Stuart stays or leaves, I think our defense will be just fine.

I would never want Ericsson to be an enforcer, but he shouldn;t be completely discouraged from dropping the gloves. Fischer was awesome after he took his lessons from Kocur and put the hurt on a few guys (Hartnell). Shanahadn was obviously valuable to have out of the box, but guys like he an Iginla, when they fight, it is a huge motivator for the team.

It's not expected for him to drop the gloves "all the time". Like I said if you know when, how, and why to fight then it's just another asset to his game. I don't even need to throw a huge list out I'll just mention Iginla and Richards, both world class talents with the ability to fight if necessary. If Ericsson has the ability to fight and knows when to and when not to, it can only improve his game, opposing forwards will think twice about what they do around Osgood with a 6'5 monster on the ice.

Crosby's fight this year was not a good example of when to fight, but if Hossa gets run from behind by Alex Burrows and lays on the ice unconscious, it shouldn't matter if Crosby has 400 points a year or not, he should respond just like all his team mates.

Seems to me there somewhat of an unwritten code amongst GMs about players on waivers. I dont think GMs have the intetions of poaching players as viciously as we seem to think. Mac and Downey will be fine if they are to be exposed to waivers.

You'd like to think a guy like McCarty would be safe on waivers but rules are rules and you can't be so sure with guys like Lowe around. 29 other guys are looking to better their team and weaken ours.

I dont think anyones thinking theyre going to be weakening our team and strengthening theirs by stealing away Downey or Mac. At this point in their careers, Downey and Mac are more valuable to the Wings than to any other team.

That's why I word it "you'd like to think..." but if either of them starts chipping in with a few goals here and there, who knows? There is always teams looking for someone who can scrap and still contribute a bit offensively.

I don't believe this story, considering that Holland is supposedly encouraging someone on the Wings to fight.

Besides, all the lessons Quincey needs on fighting, he can pick up from Lilja. The man went undefeated in his fights last year, so you can't have a better teacher than that.

Lilja also went winless if you want to look at it that way. His fighting style is throw one or two punches and go for the tackle.

Well, what do you expect? After the way he destroyed poor Patrick Sharp, no one wants to open up with him.
