I was thinking of a contingency plan in case Brad Stuart decides not to return. If Kenny and co. decide they would like a veteran prescence for one more year on the blue line, would trading for or signing Daryl Sydor make sense? There is talk he may be bought out by the Penguins because they need to clear cap space. Would it make sense to trade a draft pick, or maybe even Meech or Lebda, to have Sydor for one year? I believe his cap number is 2.5 million, and the wings have the space next season. It would be similar to trading Jason Williams contract for the expiring contract of Kyle Calder. That is about what we would like to sign Stuart for, and Sydor is a multiple cup winner. Thoughts??

Are you serious? Sydor sucks so bad that the Pens couldnt even GIVE him away when they wanted to get his ridiculous contract off their books. He would add NOTHING to our squad and would be lower on the food chain than any of Lebda, Chelios or Lilja, and all the youngsters.

God no. Last thing we need to do is give Pittsburgh a helping hand with their big mistakes.

Why should we trade anything or have any desire for a defenseman who costs $2.5m but is so useless that he was scratched in favor of Rob Scuderi for most of the playoffs? He only played in the last few games because the Pens were being drilled and were desperate to have some Cup experience on their side of the ice, for whatever that was worth.

Negative. I understand your thought process but we have more than enough veteran prescence on the blue line but have enough depth to where I think the team can comfortably put in a few young guys off and on in Meech, Quincey, Ericcson, and so forth (assuming one of Stuart or Lilja re-signs).

I dunno it seems to me that a large majority of the Red Wings fans are wanting to get rid of some of the seasoned guys and take a chance with the young guys. I don't have a preference either way. Whoever is the best plays. I say resign Stuart. If Erickson or one of the young guys wants his spot bust ass and take.

I think that if Stuart fails to re-sign than Detroit is going to sign a free agent defenseman ASAP. Lilja, Lebda and Chelios are all good 3rd pairing defensemen and Ericsson may be ready for the nhl but not the second pairing. They can afford 3-4 million a year for a veteran defenseman but Darryl Sydor is an unlikely choice.

All very valid points. There are definete pro's and cons to this possible scenario. It is not the #1 option by any means, but I thought it was an option worth thinking about. How many "washed up" players come to Detroit and resurrect their careers? Trust me, I would be a little uncomfortable helping the Penguins.

You are not serious are you? Sydor? He couldn't even crack the Pens Defensive Line-up.

Your logic is that he is a "multiple cup winner"? That means nothing. There are lots of washed up "multiple cup winners" out there.

I actually played with him and Doan tonight. And even though I'm pretty close with the family, I dont think I'd take Syd. I dunno, if Stu is gone, we definatley have to fill the gap, but I dont think Daryl is the answer.

Ericsson, Meech, Kindl, Quincey, Stafford, Smith... Way too many young defense in the system to bring anybody in. Leave the defense be... Hell, leave the team be, we're good. It should be a boring offseason, but for the better. Very minimal new signings please... ONLY FOR THE BETTER.
