NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 This is all I could find: http://sportsnet.ca/hockey/2008/06/20/sundin_canadiens/ "We gave Montreal permission to talk to Mats," GM Cliff Fletcher told The Canadian Press on Friday. "We have no other comment at this time."

Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 I've gotta say, I'm going to lose a bit of respect for the guy if he ends up going to the Habs. If you're going to make a slam-dunk, one-shot run for the Cup, you might as well sign with the best club available. And the Habs...well....

Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 I would wager that this has more to do with the length/amount of the contract that the Habs can offer than any east vs. west coast issues. He is probably going to get a raise and a 2-3 year deal. The Wings just didn't have that much room....

Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Montreal is a good team and they still have the space to make some more additions... They could easily come out of the east next year.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Then making a Cup run must be worth less to him than getting a fat paycheck So basically what you're saying is that signing with any team other than Detroit means you don't want to win the Cup? The East is so wide open that getting a guy like Mats Sundin can put you over the top. Montreal has a very solid young team and they need guys like Mats who are cagey veterans that can help the kids along. Now, they just need to add a little bit of toughness and they're set. daniel1 32 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Ah the Laughs, I mean the Leafs, lol. They had one and I mean ONLY one meaningful asset, which was Mats Sundin. What did they get for him? What did they parlay that asset into? Draft picks? Prospects? Young talent? No, no....no. They got nothing. This is why I hate the Leafs SO much; they're devoid of any leadership or direction yet the Canadian media or should I say "Toronto" media will somehow spin this clusterf*** into a "smart" move by the Leafs. Likely 1/3 of MLSE wanted to try and re-sign Sundin at the end of the season, 1/3 wanted to try and trade him while they could still get something for him and the other 1/3 thought Sundin was an outside shooter for the Raptors. That is such a f***ed up organization and will remain so until they get an actual "owner" who knows something about the sport instead of a bunch of stuffed shirt basketball-loving bureaucrats who don't know a puck from a f***. Mats is way better off with the Habs and makes them a much stronger team; I wouldn't have minded seeing him here on a 1 year 5mil contract to try and win a Cup but at least he's out of Toronto. Cern 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Then making a Cup run must be worth less to him than getting a fat paycheck Uh, Montreal was a genuine Cup contender. Price just needs a little more time to get himself comfortably in the #1 goalie role. I was praying that the Habs would steal Hossa from Pittsburgh though. I'd rather see the Panthers win a Cup than the Penguins.

So it's Cliff Fletcher's fault that Mats Sundin wouldn't waive his no-trade clause? It's the Leafs fault that they tried to get something for Mats Sundin and weren't allowed to? Owners don't need to know jack squat about hockey. They hired Cliff Fletcher. They're going to hire Brian Burke sometime in the next 12 months. Fletcher tried to trade Mats Sundin in February and wasn't allowed to because Mats Sundin didn't want to be a rental player. They also tried to trade Darcy Tucker, Bryan McCabe, Tomas Kaberle & Pavel Kubina. Cliff tried to completely blow things up and he tried to start from scratch, but those five lunkheads wouldn't let him. By trading Sundin's rights before July 1st, they will get something for him. Going by your assumptions, if they ran they way you think they do, all that would happen is that they'd let him go on July 1st for nothing. That's not what's happening at all. I'm going to completely disagree with you because if the Leafs were a team that had no plan or direction, they'd probably re-sign Mats Sundin to a huge three-year deal. Clearly, that also isn't going to happen. Edited June 20, 2008 by MacK_Attack
Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) He hasent signed there yet... nothing is official If Sundin does sign with the habs I will be dissapointed. not a knock on the habs but we have as good of a shot as anyone and we are not currently rivals with the leafs (and dont give me that historical rivalry s*** bettman killed it). It must suck for your captain to go to your main rival Edited June 20, 2008 by EZBAKETHAGANGSTA

If somebody is willing to ante up a few draft picks to sign Mats before July 1st, then I don't really care who it is.
