redwinger4747 6 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) According to TSN, the Preds have signed Ellis for 2 yrs and 3.5mil, which is 1.75mil/year. Now we see why they traded Mason. This is a steal, Ellis has a lot of potential and probably could have gotten 3mil on the open market. TSN EDIT: NOW i see where this was moved to, under the Mason trade thread. I couldn't find it, so I posted it again. Feel free to delete this, since I found where it was merged. Edited June 20, 2008 by redwinger4747

akustyk 84 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 last year they "pouched" Mason who was considered their go-to guy and their future. now they're paying big money to Ellis who doesn't even have a single whole season under his belt. next June they'll sign Rinne(sp) for even more money and declare him the guy for the future... let's get it straight... from my point of view a "quality goalie" is not someone who has played great just a partial season. this reputation is built over the years. with all respect to Ellis who was very good this year, he's likely to collapse under the pressure and land with some Blues or Kings next year. HenryMalredo 2 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) It's a solid signing. I know this opinion isn't gonna be popular, as it is almost law to hate on the Preds on these boards, but Dave Poile might be the second best GM in the NHL. I mostly agree on that and I think in Predators economic situation the team did wonders in regular season and has been solid against us in playoffs. but I just can't stop laughing at the resemblance between Ellis signing and Mason story from just a year ago. Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 If Ellis keeps up what he did in the playoffs (most saves in a game in regulation) then I think he may be the x-factor which gets the Preds out of the first round for once.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 now they're paying big money to Ellis who doesn't even have a single whole season under his belt. They're not paying him big money. 3.5 is nothing for a starting goalie, especially one who's coming off a series like the one Ellis had against the Wings just a few months ago. FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Since when is $1.75M "big money" for a starting goalie? now they're paying big money to Ellis who doesn't even have a single whole season under his belt.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Good signing and still at a fairly cheap rate. Ellis still has aways to go I think before he can earn "big money", but he deserves this raise and played his rear end off in the playoff series in the first round. If he can keep that play up on a consistent basis, a bigger pay-day will come for him.
Guest Four Report post Posted June 21, 2008 A good move by the Predators and they got to free some cap space getting rid of Mason. Now they need to get rid of Arnott and get some real talent

akustyk 84 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Since when is $1.75M "big money" for a starting goalie? it's not huge money by NHL standards. I was rather reffering to Mason who got big bucks in similar situation. but let's not forget that Ellis has not even played a whole season and is already called starter. as was supposed to be Mason. or a number of goalies who had fluke streaks and then disappeared (Hedberg, Czechmanek, Emery, Theodore...). 1.75 is not huge money and it seems Polie(sp) learned from Mason mistake. but to me it's still about making an unproven guy a starter. if he doesn't pan out Nashville season will be in jeopardy. and it's not difficult to understand that Ellis will now be playing under more pressure and with bigger expectations. simple like that. Poile didnt have a choice but to resign Ellis, if they had not reached an agreement, the few fans they have would say they are cutting costs again and wouldn't renew their season tickets. Poile didnt have a choice but to resign Ellis, if they had not reached an agreement, the few fans they have would say they are cutting costs again and wouldn't renew their season tickets. Well, to be fair, he did hold a fire sale and still manage to get his team into the playoffs. A lot of teams would give Ellis more money than that, and to lock him up for a few years is a good move. Ellis might disappear, but given the situation, a little over a million to risk on an unproven goalie isn't bad.
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Cloutier never recovered mentally after Lidstrom's goal from center ice, so let's hope that the same thing happens to Ellis, since we'll be seeng a lot more of him in the future.

I think Chicago is going to make a case for the 8th spot this year, which might bump Nashville out. Which will be nice because for some reason I'm completely bored any time the Wings play Nashville. Agreed. It is not uncommon for a goalie to have a great year or a great 1/2 year and then disappear. Chris Mason is a perfect example. He had and outstanding 1/2 year when Voukun went down. To the point that the Preds traded away Voukun thinking tht Mason was their guy. Guys to watch to see if they are for real - Ellis, LeClaire, Fleury. 1 great year does not a goalie make.... Only if they get to play Colorado. Look at the other teams in the playoffs this year. It would be unlikely that they could have beat: Detroit San Jose Dallas Anaheim Calgary but maybe Colorado Minnesota They have a ways to go before they could be considered one of the better Western Teams
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 1.75 is bargain! Great for Preds. Correction. 1.75M is a worthy price for a guy that doesnt even have a full season of good NHL goaltending under his belt. Just because some stupid GM wouldve thrown 3M his way, doesnt mean thats what hes worth. Poile is proving to be a very good GM in the crunch. Dumont, Legwand, Suter, and now Ellis. Not bad. Except for that Erat contract...that was so-so...

Except for that Erat contract...that was so-so... What's Legwand ever done? Only time he ever plays well is vs the Wings, most of the time after that he's underachieving. Suter isn't much....The Preds passed on Dion Phaneuf to draft this guy.....he's not the worst d-man on his team but he's nothing special. They'll have you think down there how great they draft, but their best players are from the free agent wire, the Wings annually draft lower than these guys, but the Wings seem to keep putting in home grown talent, and less from the free agent line. Someone in another post said they would have Pekka Rinne as the next great thing, and they forgot to add Jeremy Smith who played at Plymouth last season, who in a couple of years might unseat all of those others and be the goalie of the <insert city name> Predators.
